“Lovely hotel, terrible restaurant service”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 11, 2014

We stayed for 2 nights in April. The transfer to the hotel was great, another league. The mangrove kayaking activity we did from the hotel was overpriced for Thailand (expected in a resort) but efficient and a great experience.

However the service in the restaurant and bar was terrible and a real let down to this hotel. We quite often got the wrong meals, the staff didn't speak much English and one time we had to wait nearly an hour for a cocktail in the pool bar. We laughed it off as the charm of Thailand and didn't let it ruin our holiday but as the hotel markets itself as a higher caliber hotel I think this is really a let down - especially when comparing to the efficient transfers and activities.

The rooms were lovely. No wardrobe. Nice outdoor shower, large balcony. We only had the basic rooms and I wouldn't describe them as basic. Hotel staff at reception and in the hotel were really nice.

Fantastic view from the pool, unique experience.

Koh Yao Yai is quite underdeveloped as an island. Was good to see it but if I was doing the trip again I'd skip it.

Room Tip: Regular basic rooms are lovely

Just came back from 3 nights at Koh Yao Yai Village as part of our family holiday with 2 teenage girls, and we rated this place as one of our new favourite places to stay. We booked the Family villa ( Family 01) and were very pleasantly surprised. The room had two spacious bedrooms (large king in one, and twin beds in the other) with flat screen TV in each bedroom. Indoor and outdoor showers off master bedroom - we loved the outdoor one looking up at the tree tops. We found the king bed a bit hard, but that was fixed by asking for a soft overlay. Large lounge area with plasma TV, spacious exterior deck overlooking the other villas was a great spot to spend the late afternoon. Little bit of a hike up the hill from the reception, pools and restaurant, but did not find this as too much of a negative. The two pool areas are simply wonderful, main one with horizon pool and pool bar offered spectacular views across the beach (at low tide) and nearby islands. The 2nd pool area was also lovely (another horizon pool overlooking rice paddies and beach) and did not seem as popular with guests, but we loved it and had lunch there a couple of times. We enjoyed the food, however the service was a little slow. The day trip we did to Hong Islands was arranged through the resort and was a great day of swimming, snorkelling etc around spectacular scenery.

All in all a wonderful experience and thoroughly recommended.

Room Tip: If you are a family, go with the family rooms. Ask for a room as close to the beach as you can becau...

We stayed for 3 nights at the Koh Yao Yai Village resort in April 2014. Our stay started excellently, we were picked up by the hotels minibus at our resort in Phuket where we were whisked away to the port where we caught the speedboat shuttle. Arrival at the hotel was smooth and we were soon in our nice cool air conditioned bungalows. The bungalows were extremely nice with a good bed, private outdoor showers, and an excellent outdoor area. TBoth pools are fantastic with excellent views of the surrounding Islands.

Our first complaint was when we tried to order 5 cocktails from the pool bar, the girl we tried to speak to spoke literally no english to the point we had to point at each drink we wanted on the menu. Normally this wouldn't be a problem (we are in a non-English speak country after all!) however after this she walked over and grabbed another member of staff to speak to us. I then tried to order the cocktails and were abruptly told by the staff to come back in 10mins. No problem I went for a quick dip and 10mins came and went and I came back and asked if our drinks were ready, I was informed 10mins (the bar wasn't that busy). We sat at the bar and waited another 10-15mins when I asked whether our drinks were ready, at this point something clicked and she made 2 cocktails for us. I then received the bill for these drinks from the girl who spoke no English, I tried to explain that 3 drinks were missing but no joy! So in the end I just got the girl who spoke no English to get us 2 beers and a coke by a series of gestures. So after an hour from when we ordered our original drinks we finally got 2 of the right drinks and 3 incorrect drinks. This pretty much set the standard for service at both bars and restaurants.

Dinner wait time was around 45mins to an hour from ordering. One time we received deserts prior to receiving mains. Koh Yao Yai is very undeveloped and there is not much choice outside the hotel so you are pretty much tied into buying food / drinks at the hotel, although one lunch we did go to the Reggae Cafe just outside the hotel. Food / drink at the hotel is around 250-300Baht a main, 200Bhat a cocktail, 100 Baht a beer.

Excursions at the hotel are good with a lot of activities available, but they are 'western prices'. Expect to pay between £30-80 per excursion. We did the Mangrove Kayaking which was very good and the guide was friendly.

We tried to arrange a longboat transfer from the hotel to Phi Phi and was advised that this would be 7500Baht. In the end we organised this via the Reggae bar for 4000Baht. The longboat was boarded at the pier you can see from the hotel and I am sure if we had walked round there we could of arranged it for around 3000 Baht.

All-in-all the hotel is so close to being excellent as it has excellent facilities and a great location but it is being let down by the service at the bar and restaurant. High priced excursions can be overlooked if the rest of the hotel is brilliant but it does grind me when prices are high and service is poor.

As a tip don't go to the bar when thirsty, and don't go to the restaurant hungry (go before!)

Room Tip: All rooms are good, but try and request rooms near the reception if you don't want long walks!

Dear Valued Guest,

Thank you for taking the time to write about your recent stay with us and for your valuable feedback.

We were disappointed to hear about your experience on our our outlets

The resort put in a special training program in place to ensure that these incidents will not happen again. We appreciate your time and your understanding, so hopefully we can welcome you back one day. We are glad to hear that you enjoyed the excursions as the location of Koh Yao Yai is perfect for daily trips to Krabi, James Bond Island or Phi Phi Island.

Warmest Regards

The Management

The resort is worth every penny! The Bungalows are phenomenal. Our expectations were met and exceeded.its hard to find appropriate rooms which are well appointed. I like koh Yao Yai but an tour of koh Yao noi. This island is prettier & many more things to do. Next time!!

Just arrived back after a 02 night stay in Sea View Villa.

We arrived in the sunshine day after 30 minutes from speed boat so didn't really experience the surroundings when we first got there. We were greeted by getting in a resort signature local car. At check in Kh.Akapol and friendly staff surprised me with HBD sign and a lovely refreshing fresh juice waiting for us.Buggy took us to our WOW sea view villa The bed was very comfortable with lovely soft sheets.Oval Sofa with and daybed decorate with local style. Bath room have two separate bath room one is indoor and one is outdoor with two bath sink.

We tried lunch and dinner at the restaurant and found them all to be good we found menu had some lovely meals in there, the staff there were also very friendly.

Next morning we start with Breakfast everyday was lovely and the staff were very attentive and welcoming and always greeted us with a smile and hello. After breakfast we were able to explore the surroundings and really wasn't disappointed, we had a lovely infinity pool and sun loungers all surrounded by the sea with water liles what more could you ask for.

We took advantage of the motor bike hire and went on it ride along to the local fishing village and then went along the other way to see what was about. I was a bit nervous to start with but once I got the hang of it it was a great experience riding along the seafront with the hot breeze blowing.
.
Dinner was amazing food, service and special song from the sea. Food fresh and very delicious and mate very happy.

Thank you very much for Management and all staff for took a good cared of us. I will come back soon, I promised.

a room is ok. Everything come in natural style so I hear the gecko and cat sounds all night.
Breakfast is nice but for other meals, food is pricey and boring.
The beach and the sea is not nice.Cozy, quiet, privacy but sand is a bit rocky and muddy.

Room Tip: Seaview room is partly sea view but the room is bigger and decorate in nicer style.

Leave the hustle ^bustle of Phuket behind and take a speed boat over to the islands of Koh Yao Yai & Koh Yao Noi, Big & Small island. Accomodation was new and big enough for 4 adults to sleep. Amazing outdoor shower.Great for 2-3 days. Explore the island by bike or motor bike. The only thing was the frogs croaking all night, so no open windows.
