Spacious hotel with friendly staff. Rooms are basic and 'breakfast' is awful. The dining are is also dark and drab.

I have been staying in Maumere for a few days and based on the advice of the LP Guide on Flores, I have chosen this hotel, to reside in.
Well, the rooms that were once decent, /perhaps some 20 years ago/ have become very neglected, run down. Nobody touched anything here for the past 15 years, that is for sure. As everywhere here, maintenance is non-existent, the walls bear the marks of activities of tenants of decades past, there is no wash basin, everything leaks, crumbles, creaks. There are no windows opening to the outside, just fixed glass, when the night comes, no ventilation to air out the heat, smells. And several young, strong, healthy male locals sit around in the front lobby all day, playing cards, working their mobiles... doing nothing.
The receptionist, a handicapped local man, was very decent, helpful, spoke good English, though. Left soon, as I could.

The ever inaccurate Lonely Planet guide recommended this dive to myself and my girlfriend. It's a grotty, mosquito-ridden, tired old hotel. We had a ground floor room, and the bed was spectacularly uncomfortable; it felt like a set of uneven springs covered with a thin, moldy sheet. Overpriced at any price, this travesty cost 150,000 rupiah per night at the time we stayed there (november 2011). Bathroom was sorely in need of a good scrubbing. The room was hot compared to the lobby outside, with one anemic standing fan inadequately blowing warm air around. Despite the swarm of mosquitoes present, there was no mosquito net.

Staff were fine, but there was one particularly annoying individual ensconced in the placee: the resident tour guide, a moustachioed gentleman named "Hironymous". He presented his photo albums to us on the first day we arrived, and tried to sell us his overpriced services as a tour guide on a six day tour of Flores. Seemingly incapable of understanding that we didn't want a six day tour as we planned to see the island at our own pace over two weeks or more, he hovered around us whenever we dared to leave our room, rattling on as if we had already agreed to go with him, and interrupting our private conversations and our meals most rudely and repeatedly. My girlfriend dared to make a telephone call to the local tourist office at one point, and was interrogated by Hironymous as to whom she was calling and why, like a criminal child.

I for one can empathise with any individual who is desperate for work... but there are limits.

Our advice? Avoid both the place and the tour guide like the plague. There are better hotels in Maumere, and cheaper, friendlier tour guides dotted all around Flores.
