WOW!! Did we have a good time. 8/13/04 to 8/20/04. It was just my wife and I.
While technically, some of the comments of the earlier reviewer were accurate, this is not Disney.
Yes, the AC did not produce 60 deg rooms, but I was a comfortable 74 with a console dehumidifier to assist in humidity. My wife was even cold. Our room was on the third. The rooms were clean and produced a view of Elbow Cay across the multi-hued blue water that was to die-for. While maybe the decorations did'nt measure up to HGTV, they were adequate for me (But what do I know, I am a man!!).
The resturant folks were from the Bahamas (duh!) Everything is a bit slower in the Bahamas. But, I think it is part of the experience and the culture. Having time to get to know the people will be part of our very special memories of this place. Kevi, Porche, Linda and Lydia were wonderful to chat with at the poolside bar while waiting. Ask them about Neil and Yogi. They are the best guides for beaching/shelling, snorkling, local or deep sea fishing or lobstering. I think the experience is what you make of it. Lemons or lemonade!!
Abaco is a place that will not entertain you. You must make an effort. But you will not be disappointed with this effort.
First, get ready for the airport. While it is not any different than that of a similar sized town in Mexico or other Non-US town, it is slightly chaotic.
The key to success is renting a small boat (18-26ft)for several days. We had one for 5 days. We should have had one the whole time. Abaco's claim to fame are mostly water related. Snorkling, beaching and island hopping are easy to accomplish on your own with basic navigation and boating skills and a day with one of the experienced guides to get you oriented.
Abaco has a protected body of water (Sea of Abaco) located between the barrier islands( Cays - pronounced "keys") and the great island of Abaco. It is about 5 to 7 miles wide and about 80 miles long. There are litterally a 100 miles of reef and islands to explore, Some un-inhabited.
Tremendous snorkling. As a beginning snorkeler, we purchased good quality gear at home and took it with us. Wow. We were not disappointed. I was amazed at how boyant we were in the salt water! with a mask and snorkel, you could float for hours, without any effort to stay afloat. The coral heads came right up to the surface and produced habitat for the most beatiful fish I have ever seen. It was like swimming in an aquarium. We even had visits from the local 6ft Baracuda and numourous rays. Lobsters and moray were visible from the surface.
Watch out for the slow season from about middle of August till December. Many businesses close. Obviously, ones that cater to the locals continue. Those are the special ones.
Nippers (pig roast) on Sunday, What a blast. Wallys Restaurant (only on Fridays and Saturdays) is a must. Mango's mango daiquiris are tremendous. Their Mango grouper is a wonderful mixture of fresh seafood with exotic fruits. Even Jamie's pleasure foods (meatloaf and fried porkchop) are very edible.
This trip was everything a island vacation was expected to be. We will return with friends to enjoy a beautiful paradise
