“I would not consider staying anywhere else in Matamata”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 4, 2014

It would be difficult if not impossible to imagine a better place to stay in. Spotless, quiet, spacious, decorated with taste and close to nature. In addition, the wonderful reception by Kathleen and John made an already spectacular stay even better. Suffice to say that we were so charmed by the place that we ultimately decided not to even bother going out to a restaurant in the evening: we just got some take-out to enjoy back in the cottage.

Room Tip: Take the cottage if it's available. You won't regret it!

Coming from a bustling city, this is just the place for me to unwind, Even with two kids in tow, there was lots of room for them to run about and expend their pent up energy. Looking back at my almost one month in New Zealand, honestly, I must say this is one of the best places I have stayed at.

Kathleen is a great host and took care of all our needs, including ones that I did not expect a B&B to provide ( I shall not mention, in case every guest she now has expects it!) But she was more than happy to provide everything we needed, including extras needed to let the two kids sleep well. And they did, no waking up in the middle of the night for anything.

The moment we arrived, there she had hokey pokey cookies (for those not of NZ origin its butterscotch/caramel), scones with cream ready for the four of us! (see the pictures)

There's lots of space for them to run outside safely (no hazards from traffic, or the general environment), which they did a lot - feeding the chooks, moo-ing at our bovine friends across the fence and space to be the kids they are. It feels like a big relief from having to mind them all the time, knowing they are safe to play without supervision, allowing me time to spend with my missus.

It's so quiet and peaceful here, there is absolutely no noise from traffic, so good sleep is to be expected!

I intended to stay for two nights but ended up staying a third because the little ones just didn't want to move on, And the decision to stay another night, I would never regret.

If I ever passed this way again, this would be my first choice for a B&B. No second thoughts!

Room Tip: The cottage provides privacy and I would recommend this for those who have young children, the rooms...

We stayed here for one night and were completely spoilt. The accommodation was spotless, modern and homely, and the hosts Kathleen and John were lovely. We had gorgeous scones on arrival, a beautiful breakfast and lots of advice on potential places to visit from our hosts! Would highly recommend Chestnut Lane Cottage and would like to say thanks so much to Kathleen and John.

We stayed here overnight after visiting Hobbiton. It was a lovely cottage, with all the features you need. The hosts were welcoming and friendly. We had scones on arrival, and a fantastic cooked breakfast in the morning - it was one of the best cooked breakfasts we had on our whole holiday! We ended up chatting to the hosts for quite a while - we highly recommend this B&B! The grounds were beautiful, and it was so peaceful to stay there.

Room Tip: We stayed in the cottage - it was lovely!

We stayed for 3 nights in the self contained Cottage. It was beautifully appointed with everything provided for a quiet comfortable stay. It was more like 5 star facility, and the hosts made it special. Breakfast was sumptuous, and we were spoilt.
Would highly recommend a long stay, as a base for Hobbiton, Rotorua and Tauranga coast, and Mt Maunganui.

Room Tip: Would recommend the Cottage with all its facilities, but the other bedrooms are a high standard anyw...

My friend and I weren't so sure if staying inside people's home was the best idea during our quick stop in Matamata, especially when the home owner is in the house. But that is the real deal with Bed and Breakfast. So close to the Hobbiton, Kathleen and her husband surprised us with yet another great Kiwi hospitality, welcoming us to their home as if we were at our own place. We didn't get the cottage as it was booked by another couple but Kathleen has another two bedrooms for four with its own private space for guests. Everything was superb, the bedroom, bath and the whole house is so perfect. If you need guidance, good food, or just nice conversation, this is the place you want to be. Highly Recommended :)

Room Tip: The cottage is a separate building outside Kathleen's main home. Inside the main home, there ar...
