“Cool bungalow with nice bar”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 3, 2009

OK. I got this small place suggested to me by a very good travel agent at the Hotel Viengthai near the Khosan Rd area of Bangkok (a great place too by the way). She suggested Chaweng Chalets so as I trusted her I paid up. THEN I read the reviews on here... stupid way around I know but anyway. I was a little apprehensive to say the least, but the bad reviews here are all quite old. What I can say is that since those reviews were written, they must have pulled their socks up quite a bit. The building works are all finished and I never heard a thing in my bungalow (and I was there just after New Year and during the Full Moon). The chalets are far enough away from the madding crowd to be quiet but near enough that you can find it all in about 5 minutes. The rooms themselves are large and clean - cleaned every day in fact (sheet and towels) There is a huge fridge, and a big separate area to sit and chill out. The TV is OK, though no DVD player. The bungalows are in a row at right angles to the beach, so no view, but you walk along them until you hit the beach (about 20 seconds). At the beach is a nice surprise (well not a surprise anymore, sorry) - there is a very cool bar area, with great music played by a visiting DJ every day. The music is cool and chilled - not loud teenage trash - and Wolfgang the owner is so laid back he is almost horizontal. The food is pretty good too. If you crave a swimming pool then you just nip next door - buy a drink there and they'll let you use it. Oh one last thing - the Thais there are really lovely and I haven't had a warmer welcome anywhere else. I paid 1750 baht for a bungalow - I wasn't in the haggling mood but you might get better if you tried harder than I did. Its completely safe and there is a huge padlock for your door. The rooms do smell a bit damp and you need to put the air-con on to get rid of it, but having stayed in many of these tropical places in this price range its par for the course. If you stay there in the bungalows you'll love it. If your a loud idiot who wants to get off your face and just annoy everyone, dont because you'll ruin it - go vomit somewhere else!

Beeing at Chaweng Chalet has been my best experience ever in Thailand. My bungalow was unexpected huge for its categorie and perfectly equiped. Clean, original, and confortable. I could meet my friends for breakfast right in my room, since i had coffee facilities and a nice sitting corner for everyone. The bed was big and soft. Sleeping there was like beeing in heaven. All the staff were so friendly and helpful! But the best was awaiting me in the lovely Sun light pub, on the beach, where I got dependent on such good cocktails, and all attentions of their superb staff. Firedancing shows at night, cool beach parties with free BBQ, free trials with their fire stuff and much more. But the good thing was the other guests. Socializing and chatting even making new friends it's so easy there! This place offers an open door for special people looking exactly for the opposite than common ordinary tourists.

  • Disliked — the common ordinary tourists spoiling the fun with their complaints(not too many bof that kind, luckly)

This small hotel is situated in the centre of Chaweng beach. Has bungalows and rooms as well. We have stayed in a bungalow for 7 nights in the beginning of January 2007. It is at right angles to the beach so there is no possibility for beach view. Actually what you can see from all rooms and bungalows is the tin fence of the neighbour hotel wich is quite close (about 2m). The rooms are exactly as on the hotel's webpage [--] with nice furnitures and big room however they are quite used as well. The bathroom is awfull. The toilet was stucked already after the first usage.... Actually the worst thing on it that it doesn't have any roof. It means that the bathroom (yes, with toilet) is in one air with the whole bungalow. So if you need to use it, make sure that nobody is in the room... There is a big construction behind the hotel which is really noisy and they are working from 8am till 8pm. So it is very annoying if you would like to relax. I don't think that they will finish it before the end of 2007. We have never tried the breakfast, because we like or better to say would have liked to sleep a lot. The beach is as small as other hotel's however only Chalet has these sitting deckchairs that are really dirty on the other hand. Sine its located in the center of Chaweng its a good place to stay if you like crowd, like to go out often but don't like to walk a lot. So all in all as the previous visitor said: It was highly enough for one stay and I would never go back again!

This place is a hole. The photos in the brochure bore no resemblance to what we found. It is 20 years past its use-by.

The first inkling was when the taxi lady at the airport gave us a funny look when we stated Chaweng Chalet Resort as our destination. We pulled up and were frankly shocked. Next-door is a full noise building site still at least 12 months off completion (As of Dec ’06). The "Resort" itself is a narrow row of dim, smelly little hovels beside a narrow path leading to the beach. There is a dingy little bar at the end. Outside the rooms are "water features" which in reality are stagnant pools of water full of Mozzy larvae. Nice. Especially since the rooms were full of the little buggers.

Most telling was the embarrassed look on the faces of the staff. Being Thai and therefore lovely people, we could see they were shamefaced at our being ripped off. I had the feeling they had seen many unhappy punters arrive before.

As for us, we trooped off down the road and investigated decent hotels. Once we had secured two rooms at the excellent Iyara Beach Hotel & Plaza we collected our bags from the Chalet “resort” and went to town on the manager, a partial refund was given the next day after much arguing. Again, I think this was a common occurrence.

In short, don't even think about it. Not even if you're a backpacker. There is better accommodation on Chaweng. Chaweng Chalet Resort is misrepresented in its advertising material, next to a noisy building site, is dank, mozzy infested and the rooms stink.

we paid £125 for a five night stay and did expect a better standard of accomodation, the facilities were actually non-existant, it was basically just a very small reception area on the roadside and then a row of rooms and chalets leading down to the beach. it we were given a more realistic overview of the accomodation by the hotels broshure then we would not have been as dissappointed , but the resort did look idealic from the pictures on the broshure, when this was far from the case. also the breakfast served was disgusting and the food was crawling with ants... would not stay here again.
