Have just returned from 8 days at the Kandaburi and it was one of the nicest hotels we have stayed in. We had a hillside room on the top floor and had a choice of two lifts one to the pool level and one to the ground floor where you can walk down the hill to the road. Generally we used the pool exit as it has some steps down through the restaurant and lovely water features. Despite some peoples comments the hill is not steep and road is easy to cross (it's not the M25) and the steps down to the beach level where the breakfast area was are not a problem, infact it was nice to have a little walk to breakfast.
Our room was very spacious and the bathroom huge, almost space wasted. The bath was rather small which seemed a shame in a room that big and the step down to shower was large but the hook for the shower head was to low for your average european male. Nice touch having a gap in the wall beside the bath with a curtain which you could pull back and watch the telly while soaking. The bed was firm but not that bad. The hotel staff were most helpful and the couple of times I rang reception they understood me completely and my requirements were dealt with instantly.
The breakfast food was very good with a large selection of fruits, cereal, salad stuff, hot english/thai dishes and the cut yourself bread was delicious. Only had one evening meal which was a freeby and we chose the barbeque night but wasn't particularly impressed. There are masses of places to eat outside the hotel and down the beach towards chaweng centre which are reasonably priced and serve excellent food. The only one I would avoid is the German pizza restaurant (yes I know that's a contradicition) about three doors along from the hotel on the left the food was very average and they are disorganised as they could only manage to cook one pizza at a time and then I watched the chef through the open door smoking a fag and dropping his ash, not impressed. Will agree with the person who flagged up Your Place on the beach just a short walk from the hotel, it was excellent. The location of the Kandaburi at the top end of the beach is good if you're not into the night life as you can dip in when you want action and out when you want the quiet life. Loads of places around to rent scooters or cars, we rented a car for 2 days for £30 and saw all of the island as it's not that large and it saved paying for touristy trips. Beware though lots of them don't do insurance so if you crash you pay, but as they drive on the same side as UK it was a bit easier.
Both pools are nice and there were always beds as the hotel did not seem very full. The pool on the hillside had some sunbeds actually in the pool on a step with ankle deep water and infront some steps into the deep pool which was fun. The beach front pool was larger but not so deep and both had areas where the water bubbled up like a spa bath which was nice to give your muscles a bit of a pounding
Overall we really like this hotel, the location was perfect and the bit of the beach it fronted was reasonably peacefull with great views. Would recomment to others and would stay again.
