We go to Thailand as much for the (Thai) food as anything else and mostly eat Thai food on Samui, at anywhere from roadside stalls/markets to small local restaurants and an occasional fancier place. Bet we usually have one night a week for International/Western food, last year it was Orgasmic and Dining on the Rocks, this year we plumped for The Larder and Ocean 11.
This is not a restaurant to go for the views, it's just on the side of the road between Chaweng and Choeng Mon and looks out onto the road at front and a local store next door. Parking is down a laneway to the side, perfectly easy to get to and park in, if the "local" reviewer who complained about it hasn't parked in much worse places on Samui then he hasn't been to many places.
The layout and furnishings are basic but comfortable and the service was excellent on the night we were there. Nothing fussy or pretentious here.
My partner started with Tom Yum Siam cocktail, she's tried this before elsewhere, but this was the best yet, tom yum flavours, kick of chilli even, not too sweet.
Starters were miso Foie (foie gras with black truffles and miso) and a duck breast and liver pate ( a huge serve), both excellent.
Mains were double duck (roast breast and confit leg) and wagyu beef, fairly thinly sliced, cooked perfectly and buried under a salad dressed with stilton cheese (a bit like the Orgasmic version, designed to make it look "healthy" I think). No hugely fussy arrangements, just very well prepared food with great flavours.
The wine list is quite brief and we weren't up to a bottle, so I had a glass of Montepulciano d'Abbruzzo that was quite big and firm, went well with the steak, not exorbitantly priced either.
We couldn't fit in dessert this time, but went back later at night a week later for just cocktails and dessert, chocolate souffle and a huge chocolate fudge cake.
Price for drinks and starters/mains for 2 was 3510 Bt, all the prices on the menu are inclusive of taxes and service charge, there is no big shock of the extra charges at the end.
I think the Larder offers good food at a good price with good service in a comfortable room, no fuss and pretensions, I hope they are still there next year, we'll be back.
