“The right hotel for the right guests”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 6, 2011

STAY: Duplex suite, 3 share, 4 nights

DESIGN & IMPRESSION: This was not a big, sprawling 5 star resort, but a peaceful yet tasteful boutique hotel. Whilst not huge, it was spacious, with large, open common areas and a very relaxing atmosphere. The corridors leading to the rooms go up and down stairs which may be annoying to those with impaired mobility, but add character and interest to the design. Some areas near the stairs have lowered ceilings such that taller people who don't watch where they're going may hit their head. This probably wouldn't comply with western building standards. However, it had made me realise that perhaps we should not forget to watch where we're going and we won't hit our heads!

The rooms may be slightly dated but definitely warm in design without the cold, sterile or empty feel of some places. The hot water system does take some time to adjust and I see this was noted by other reviewers too. The water pressure was moderate but adequate. As far as the rooms are concerned, I found the balcony to be a great place to hang out, just relaxing, reading or making use of the free wifi. Secondly, the living room downstairs is a great place for drinks or a little party. Surprisingly there was no TV in the living room, but I suspect one could probably have been made available if requested.

STAFF: This has to be the best part of the review. I have noted some previous reviewers being concerned about staff who couldn't speak English. There is no such concerns now! Whilst the staff members speak English at varying standards, I have not come across any situation where communication was a problem. Communicating in basic English, with smiles and gestures and the most hospitable attitude, the staff members have always delivered. Whilst professional, each staff member also seems comfortable to display his/her own personality to deliver service in a most relaxing and unpretentious manner.

When we checked out, house keeping noted a missing laundry bag. One of us (not me!) had taken it, thinking it was free. I mention this as a previous reviewer also mentioned a similar experience where he/she felt as if being accused of theft. I am pleased to say that on this occasion, the staff handled this in a most discrete, sensitive and courteous manner without any accusatory tones.

WIFI: Wifi was available throughout almost the entire property, with several black spots. Considering the size of the property, I found the wifi coverage to be impressive.

FOOD: Do not expect over-indulgent, elaborate breakfast buffet with endless selections. The breakfast offered here is a modest selection of Continental, American or Thai breakfast dishes, presented in an unpretentious manner, of moderate quantity. A good selection of local fruit and great coffee complete the meal. This was perfect for my taste. Over-indulgers may be better off elsewhere... perhaps this explains why the average guest at Muang Kulaypan seems to be more physically fit than the average tourist in a typical 4 or 5 star resort!

We had a seafood BBQ one night, arranged at last minute with about 1 hour warning. Jae, the restaurant manager was concerned that it was too late to get fresh seafood from the market. He forewarned us about the limitation of the food selection, but despite this was able to make this happen with a great meal minus some ingredients. I would love to return and try this again with adequate notice.

LOCATION: The beach is at a protected location and the water was almost always calm. The sand at the beach itself was nice, fine sand that feels great under feet. Unfortunately the water is at an area with seaweed and some corals, so care must be taken when walking out to sea, which is tempting as it remains shallow for a long way out. However, there are many nice sandy areas if you carefully explore the beach. Getting out on the water with a kayak is perfect as the water is so calm and you can see the corals just under the water. The general location is also very convenient being a short walk to the main areas and shops in Chaweng.

HIGHLIGHTS: Staff!!!! Exploring the beach. The balcony and living room of duplex. Poolside. Little huts for sitting/drinking/meals by the beach. Beachside massage. Relaxed atmosphere and design. And Mira - the manager who seems to mysteriously appear out of nowhere to help with things when needed. She is the perfect interface between Thai hospitality and western expectations!

SUGGESTIONS (Some of these points may be petty but I'm struggling to find major criticism):
- Footpaths from living room of duplex to pool area so guests can walk barefoot comfortably without walking on grass
- Areas to wash sand off feet from the beach.
- General update of some run-down areas
- Gym.
- Website: this needs flash which makes it difficult to explore on mobile devices. Perhaps a mobile version of the website may help. Whilst there are some nice pictures on the picture gallery, more pictures of the rooms when browsing are the various rooms can help.
- Keycard access rather than traditional keys would be much easier to carry especially around pool and beach.

SUMMARY: We had a fantastic time here. I would have no hesitation recommending Muang Kulaypan to the right people. I would not recommend it to those seeking 5 star luxury with everything, or seeking to over-indulge, or to be totally pampered. Or those seeking a full activity program, kids club etc. It would suit those who would like to relax, eat moderately, enjoy friendly Thai hospitality, and appreciate the uniqueness and spirituality of the environment.

Summary: Good location (very close to activities, but sufficiently far away to find peace); in front of a pretty good beach; fantastic staff; buildings quite run down and will benefit from a makeover.

I travelled with a family group of 18 - quite a nightmare for the hotel I would imagine, and the other guests! But I must say that the entire reservation and check-in process was made very smooth and was an absolute breeze. We were collected at the airport by a convoy of three hotel vans - promptly and pleasantly. Thanks again Mira for making all this happen.

We liked the location of the hotel. Close enough to everything - walking distance to north Chaweng area, within reach of many restaurants and massage places. The beach fronting the hotel is very nice -- gentle slope, very little wave (ie. calm waters), and reasonably clear water.

The staff are generally speaking, delightful. There are many notable mentions. Nes, Jae, Tan, Wawa ... all went out of their way to make our stay pleasant ... and nothing is really too much trouble for them.

The property itself can best be described as rustic. I think the original concept was that of a Thai kingdom -- wild sprawling property in a U shape, surrounding the beautiful pool, and overlooking the wonderful beach. The concept is good - and the property was probably lovely for a very long time. But the condition is run down, and the attention to building details leaves a lot to be desired. This is a three star property with five star service.

The best thing about the hotel is perhaps the pool and the gardens. The water is beautifully warm, and it gets a lot of sunshine. A very relaxing spot. The pool service though can be improved. At 10am in the morning, the pool-side is often without the pool attendant, or towels, and it becomes a hunting game to go around the pool to find fresh towels.

This property also lacks air-conditioned common areas to generally rest and relax. There is a reading room, which is too hot to be in. The gym does not exist ... it comprises a small area with two pieces of very very rudimentary exercise bike, and a table tennis table. The best place to "hang out" is in the lovely huts at the edge of the property facing the sea -- which is nice, but you wouldn't call this luxurious.

So, all in all -- a nice property staffed with excellent crew. If you are accustomed to budget accommodation, then you would find this property exceptionally good. If you are more used to luxury and comfort, and you are expecting a five (or even four) star property, then you will be disappointed.

Room Tip: The two-room suite is fantastic value for money. You get the usual two deluxe rooms (at the price of...

We arrived at a time when the hotel was undergoing a management change, although this did not impact upon us or our stay (except for the internet connection which was unfortunately very poor but being rectified while we were there.)

You have to be prepared for this to be different to many other places you might stay in Samui. There is loads to like about it : only 40 or so rooms, but really spacious grounds. A fantastic pool. Wonderful little huts right on the beach where breakfast, lunch and dinner are served. The rooms are well appointed and serviceable, although in need of a little renovation and repair, which will probably come as the new management settle in. And the staff are excellent and always ready to help where necessary.

As many will know if they have stayed at the north end of Chaweng beach, the beach itself isn't great. Or rather, the water near the beach. Luckily, you can walk out to a spit of sand which is located further up the beach where the water is what you would hope tropical waters to be like. And, as mentioned earlier, the pool at the hotel is great so this counteracts the poor beach.

It's definitely a place to stay when you want to be out of the party element of central Chaweng but within easy walking distance of everything.

My wife & I just returned from 5 days here and have to summarise as "not a very nice experience".

We arrived and were quite shocked at the run down condition of the building & grounds and mis representation of the property when compared to the suite of lovely internet photos's. The lawns were unkempt (as opposed to natural surrounds), the deluxe balconies had grass some 5 foot high and not an umbrella to be seen. (Unlike the promotional photos which are clearly very old representations of better days gone by). On the 3rd day, activity started to 'clean up' the grounds and some (older) umbrellas appeared so it begun to look much better. However, when consideration is given to the price charged in comparison to other nicer nearby hotels it is too far much to pay as the property is not much beyond a back packers lodge. Breakfast was actually a very nice morning event and the staff were pleasant. The massage ladies affiliated with the hotel on the beach were excellent..

This property has undergone a management change of recent which was on display at the front of the property and a full suite of new managers and staff were being sought after. We were initially tolerant of the deficiencies giving credit to the ownership change.

The experience concluded with my wife & I effectively accused of 'stealing' a bottle opener from the room by management which was simply disgraceful. The house maid came into our room before we had finished packing, clearly under management directive to do a check and found there was no wine opener in the room. Upon checkout we were challenged as to the whereabouts of this item and then asked to sign a declaration at that "we believed the item was not in the room to prevent a charge being levied on us for the missing item":. We were appauled as it was not there in the first place and another example of the property delivering a back packers level of customer respect and value.

Try other establishments as there are better value for money properties in the area.

I travelled to Samui with a group of friends, for a break from our lives in Australia.

We arrived at samui airport where we were greeted by a friendly employee from Muang Kulaypan for our transfer to our hotel.. On time and very helpful with our luggage. After our short trip from Samui airport to the hotel. We were amazed when we walked through the Big wooden entrance doors into paradise..

The Hotel was directly on the beach with great views and great landscapes. We were greeted once again by the staff who were great help with our check in process, even brought our bags upto our rooms for us.

After check-in we went to our rooms, and once again we were amazed by the cleanliness and the modern style of our rooms, we had a great view of the garden and beach from our balcony which made waking up every morning a dream.

The Food at the resturant was lovely, dining in the beach huts really made it another great experience with the friendly and great service to tend to all of our food needs.

The Massages on the beach were also lovely in the huts, directly on the beach this time.

All in all the holiday in samui was great, the staff always happy to lend us a hand with any thing we needed so i the service was great.

Would stay here again with no problem

Our stay was wonderful in the two bedroom suite with a family of five. Being June, everything was very quiet, peaceful and relaxing. Service v.good, room v.good, location v.good

There's plenty of other reviews about the location of the hotel and its facilities so we wont go into those as they are pretty accurate. However, we'll mention some specific aspects of our experience.

Perfect, although arriving late in the evening, we did not receive our promised welcome drink. (Not a big deal, and we didn't pursue)

The room was not as expected, but very nice. The website description of the duplex suite could be improved. "Duplex Suite- two bedrooms A two bedroom suite with two private balconies facing the large swimming pool in our lush garden with ocean view and day bed sitting area. The double bed room is upstairs while the twin bedded room is connected to the living room and kitchen room on the first floor & bar with separate study tables, dining area."

From the website description and photos, we thought the two bedroom suite would be fully enclosed, However, both two bedrooms were upstairs with a stairway between the rooms leading to the downstairs living and kitchen area. Each bedroom connects to the stairway, that is not enclosed, so the mosquitos and cats can enter the stairway. (So don't leave the interconnecting bedroom doors open!)

At the bottom of the stairway are the air-conditioner compressors. We read one post complaining about the noise of these - Yes they are noisy, and starting up and shutting down during the night was annoying. The solution - either don't use the A/c, or keep the A/c on all night to have noise in the bedroom to drown out the outside noise with a constant noise inside the bedroom and rug up under the covers in the lovely bed (we did not find the matress too hard as some report).

The second bedroom with twin beds could do with heavier drapes - The light shines through very early in the morning making the room too bright.

The toilet in the main bedroom wouldn't flush on arrival, but this was quickly attended to.

Although the website reported a 42 inch TV in the living room for the one bedroom suite, our two bedroom suite would have benefited greatly from another TV downstairs.

The kitchen was not very well supplied with cooking utensils if one intended to cook, however, the fridge was very useful.

On day one there was a bench press and multi-purpose weight machine in the what appeared to be the mini-gym under our bedroom. This was removed on day two of our stay. We never did enquire as to why, or where it went.

We had lots of trouble getting reliable access to the internet and suspected a router configuration problem at the hotel. During our stay, the hotel made some changes to the system, resulting in loss of access for a while when they changed one of the routers from an open (no password) connection, to a WPA connection. So we just had to go back to reception to get the password. After also making some changes to our notebook, together with possible changes made by the hotel, all worked fine. We had a strong wireless connection, and good speeds.

We only had breakfast at the restaurant. Service was nice and friendly. Sometimes the hot food comes out a little cold (eg the baked beans and "hash browns"). The coffee cups are small, and only one day of the six night stay was a refill offered by staff. I am sure a refill would be provided upon asking though.

It was so relaxing sitting under the Salas in the morning

We did not dine at the restuarant as the menu didn't entice us. Lots of other choices just minutes north along the beach or south into Chaweng.

Nice selection to choose from, but so many were unavailable. "Broken" disks were often the reason.

The gift shop shown on the website didn't seem to exist during our stay (the location seemed to have been used as business centre or office.

Staff were also very friendly and helpful in assisting with tour bookings, printing documents (for a modest fee), late checkout etc..

Great stay overall - and whilst some of the above may sound like complaints, they are not sufficient issue to prevent us from staying here again.

Dear Valued Guests,

This in-depth and constructive review is exactly the type of feedback every hotel is the most pleased to receive. Excellent analysis or our strengths and suggestions for points of improvement!

It is great pleasure to let you know that the Two Bedroom Duplex Suite description on our website is under revising, and our strengthened team continues to update the site in order to provide the most useful and informative descriptions of all the hotel facilities. Additional flat screen TV is being considered to the Two Bedroom Duplex Suite and mini gym has already been brought back, thanks to our continuing guest feedback. DVD-library is under renewal as we speak, since the time and heavy usage had taken it’s toll on the selection. Several other guest supplies are also under upgrading - this is definitely a prime time to have your say in making Muang Kulaypan!

Muang Kulaypan Team sincerely thanks you for all these valuable comments, and looks forward providing another delightful vacation in the future!

Kind Regards,
Mira Ervasti

Overall, we did not like Koh Samui (at least Chawaeng Beach). There was nothing to do really, especially if you have been in Thailand before. For people here for the first time, it might be enough.
Anyway, the hotel was beautiful. Outside of the rooms, a huge garden with plants and huge trees sits in front of the ocean. The pool was gorgeous and uses sea water, I think, so it was fun to swim in. The breakfast was very good, both Thai and Western. One waiter, in particular, was helpful and kind.
Also, when we decided to stay one more day, they cut us a deal. And, when we had to wait for the airplane, which was in the evening, they gave us a separate room to stay in, for free. Many hotels just make you check out. Relaxing in the room for a few hours was much better than sweating outside right before a flight.
Some of the staff members were a little stand-offish, but besides that, we really enjoyed it. Some might complain it is a little too far outside, but that quiet atmostphere was what we liked about it and we didn't mind walking 5 minutes down the road to all the restaurants and stuff.
