“There are better places on the globe”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 27, 2013

Booked this based on the many good reviews on this site and for the fact they had one of the best dive shops on the island.
Initial impressions were good, welcoming staff then we were whisked off across the main road to our delux room.
Room was spacious with large bathroom, however there is nowhere, not even a drawer to put any clothes. We literally lived out a suitcase. There is hanging space for a few shirts and that is it. This is an utter disgrace for a 4+ star family resort.
You have to stay in the delux rooms. If you book standard to skimp on costs then forget it - look elsewhere. There are standard rooms that overlook the busy road. You have been warned, so don't complain on here on your return! The delux rooms however are across the main road from the main complex which is not ideal. It is a bit of a trek. The plus point was that there is a private pool area for these rooms which the masses do not know about and is much quieter.
It rained... alot. The hotel is not designed for rain. Everyone pours into the small bar area from the beach and main pool area as it is the only place to go. I hate to be discriminatory, but I was not expecting the type of clientel here. The other guests would appear to be more at home on an all inclusive in the Med [Tatoos, drinking, reserving sun loungers before breakfast and so on] Even If you want to sit outside on you room balcony while it is raining, forget it, you will get soaked as the covering/roof is poorly designed.
They have 1 internet station which is slow and barely useable. You are blocked from using anything with a password so checking emails/face book or even checking in for a flight is off limits. At least it keeps the kids off, but you can't do much with it either.
The dive shop was good and helpful. There is zero diving and snorkelling around the island itself though. The best place is at Koh Tao which takes an hour and a half to get to in their boat. The journey is ROUGH. Due to the rain, visability while diving was next to hopeless. If diving is your goal go to Cancun for the same money [and a direct flight to boot]. Due to the long speed boat trip it was also pricey at £100 for 2 dives.
The Beach and sea at the hotel is hopeless. Dirty, very Shallow, you are only up to your knees if you swim 100 metres out. Because of this there is zero visability. None whatsever. You can't even see your hand infront of your face.
The best part was the beach bars next door to the hotel. Chaweng itself is an absolute dump - NOT what I expected. Head to the beach bars for a cold beer and fresh seafood at the end of the day.
No complaints re food at the breakfast buffet or at the bar.
We hired a car from the hotels tour desk, although he never once asked to see driving licences or take credit card details. We just handed him the cash and drove off! You will see on your drive round the islands much better places to stay and better beaches on the west and north coast - you will wish you had booked those.

Dear AhMrBond,

Thank you for taking the time to share feedback of your recent stay with us. I'm sorry to hear that the poor weather during your time here affected your experience in the various areas mentioned, it does make a difference to an island holiday, especially when diving is the focus. As you say, our hotel has not really been designed with rain in mind, though this is the case for many beach resorts.

Appreciate your compliments about our food and beverage, as well as service at the hotel. We've noted your points for improvement and will address them where possible.

Thanks again for sharing, I would agree that better places on the globe do exist, but there are certainly many redeeming features for this little island too, especially when the sun is shining ;)

Best wishes,

Martin Kunzmann

Amari Palm Reef has everything you expect from a great beach resort -- nice rooms, very good landscaping, couple of swimming pools and a beautiful beach with white sands. Most importantly it is walking distance from hub of activities including street markets and restaurants. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The only low point was the front desk and guest relations staff who were surprisingly not warm and pleasant. However special thanks to the housekeeping staff who were welcoming, smiling and most helpful.

Dear Bhuvnesh,

Thank you very much for reviewing your stay with us, it is a pleasure to hear that overall it was very much enjoyed. At the same time I am disappointed that your experience with our reception team was below expectation and will certainly take it up with them for improvement. We would like to turn that "Almost Perfect" into a "Perfect", perhaps on your next visit to Koh Samui!

Best wishes,

This was our first visit to Koh Samui and definitely won't be our last. This place is just wonderful - our only regret is that we didn't plan to stay longer. The resort is just a short walk to town where there is plenty of shopping. The restaurants are excellent as is the breakfast buffet. Beaches are beautiful.

Room Tip: There are two parts to this resort - one on the beach and then the newer part which is across the ro...

This is the second time we have stayed at this resort. We were delighted with our two week stay three years ago and just had to return if we were travelling to Thailand again. So we booked two weeks again this year (Feb - March). This resort has everything you need! The staff are so welcoming that you feel special, including the security staff who make sure you are safe crossing the street. The service staff in the restaurant are all gorgeous gals and guys that welcome you with a big smile to breakfast every morning and make sure that you are satisfied with everything from where you sit to the coffee or tea they bring. The food is wonderful, the location is great, the people are unbelievably welcoming. We highly recomment this resort on Koh Samui.

We always finish our Koh Samui and Thai holidays in an Amari resort or hotel, that final bit of pampering before heading home. The Palm Reef is excellent for some self indulgence, a great breakfast buffet, poolside snacks and a host of evening buffetand BBQ options (oh and the Happy Hours) ensure to chill out to the max.

The staff and always smiling and courtious and couldnt be more helpful.

Room Tip: The garden rooms are the quietest away from the pool areas and with a back path to Pregos a very go...

Absolutely delighted with the whole of the 4 week stay. Staff were brilliant, always extremely helpful, friendly and smiling. We were made to feel very special. Facilities were excellent, as was the food. Location of hotel was great for easy access to Chaweng and all it offers. Looking forward to returning next year.

I booked the Amari after friends recommend it and I couldn't have been more delighted. The location is a 5 minute walk from the start of the main Chaweng strip where there is plenty of choice for shopping and food options. I booked a package via the hotels website and a room upgrade was included. The room itself was spacious and on the garden side of the hotel, bed was extremely comfortable and house keeping couldn't be faulted. Plenty of choice for breakfast which was included in package and always good. The pool/beach area was busy but kept clean and tidy. Khun Nakorn, Khun Kip and the rest of the staff deserve a special mention as they were brilliant. Always helpful in moving a bed into the sun or shade for me and so polite ! If you spend any time here, speak to these guys!! I will definitely return, in fact thinking of a family holiday in July

Room Tip: Deluxe Rooms on garden side are quiet
