“Peace on Earth!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 3, 2013

Very quiet, peacefull hotel in the noorth of Chaweng Beach. Just 10 minutes walk to the center of Chaweng where you can find the noise, the shops and the bars.
Great atmosphere for relaxing. The staff is very friendly and helpfull. The hotel itself is very well maintained. No old paint or whatsoever. The garden/ walkingarea is also beautiful and very well maintained.
I would recommend this hotel to people (couples) who want to relax in the day and don't mind to walk a little (or take a bemo) for getting to shops etc.
We have not tried the restuarant, but it looks great and romantic in the evening on the beach.
I had a great suit made in the hotel boutique.

Hotel is lovely and staff couldnt do more to assist. Rooms spacious and clean. Close to airport and no noisy planes flying over the hotel. Pool lovely, restaurant amazing! My only critism is the beech had washed up debris on daily basis however this is cleaned up daily by staff. Made me realise how messy us humans are!! Keep the oceans clean people!! Beach 100 meters down from the hotel is much nicer. 10 min walk from Chaweng town. Noisy at night as a result of bar next door. Despite this we had a great stay and a fantastic holiday!! (we stayed for 6 nights). Breakfast was yummy!!

Room Tip: It appeared that pool side/sea view rooms were limited.

We upgraded our room before leaving the UK to Grand Deluxe Seaview and were very grateful that we had- many of the other rooms would seem to be very dark (although some might say shaded). As it was though, our room was great- beautiful view over the pool to the beach, literally a stones throw away. Being on the first floor we had the advantage of a refreshing breeze from the sea right on to our veranda - much appreciated in the intense heat. The décor is Japanese style minimalist, which is initially a bit disconcerting, but after a day or so we began to appreciate the functional simplicity. Good sized bed ,couch, TV etc plus a large wet room with a great shower (no bath though) and a large veranda with comfy seats and table.
Staff were great, very friendly and helpful and the breakfast was fine.
As we often do, on our first night we ate in the hotel- in the Japanese themed restaurant. Sadly this was a real disappointment - the food was really nothing special and (compared to many other restaurants nearby) overpriced. This seems to me to be the one real problem here, there are so many other places to eat that the slightly elitist feel of the restaurant might put many off. Perhaps they could concentrate less on the emphasis on their fine wine cellar and more on the
accessibility of their food.
Back to the location - the hotel is situated on the northern edge of Chaweng which for us was perfect - far enough away from the touristy main drag, but an easy walk along the beautiful beach if you wanted to get into the bars and clubs(literally ten minutes). I've seen criticisms of the beach on these pages but have to say for us the standard was very high, cleaned daily and so nice that we swam in the sea rather than the pool. The sun loungers were always well kept and we had no problem obtaining a space provided we were there before 11 am or so. Taxis in the town are abundant and very reasonable provided you agree a price before hand - ten pounds or so for ten miles seemed about average - unheard of at home!.

Room Tip: Can only speak for ours - room 202 was great.

Spent 12 nights here in Feb this year.... We had booked , through Trailfinders, a 'Grand Delux Double room, first floor and near to the sea. On arrival we were shown to a ground floor room , near the back of the hotel, and worst of all , as you opened the room door , the smell of 'damp' was overpowering....We refused to take this room, explaining why. They eventually found us a first floor room, again at the back of the hotel, overlooked by the dining room, ( no privacy at all ) and as far away from the sea as was possible. AND again NOT what we had booked. It wasn't until the 6th day that we eventually got the type of room we had paid the extra money for.
What we couldn't understand was ,on the day we arrived, we had booked in early, .(.before anyone else..) ....why we couldn't have been allocated the correct type of room straight away because we know there were vacant rooms available !!!.
Even the manager, who we believe is English, was not very helpful until pushed.
However...we enjoyed our time here, the rooms are very clean, the staff polite, and the setting ideal.

Room Tip: Beware of the 'damp ' smelling rooms !!!!..someone else has mentioned the problem so we are...

We looked for a boutique resort at Chaweng, close enough to be part of the life of that part of Samui, but at such a distance as to not be a part of it all the time. We found this at Akyra, and we enjoyed the nine days we spent there as the first part of our stay at Samui. We were upgraded to a suite from the sea view room we'd booked, which was great - the regular rooms seemed rather small from what we could see. The suites, however, have little privacy, and the "private garden" advertised was in fact the bamboo enclosure surrounding the outdoor bathroom.

There are a few things that would improve the good things that Akyra does:
The welcome at Akyra at the reception was rather formal and not very warm. A greater effort could easily improve that crucial first impression.
There's a great pool with good pool service and a wonderful view of the sea. Serving ice water and maybe even fresh fruit would add to the atmosphere at little cost to the hotel.
The rooms are well equipped but we would've liked a beach bag.
Also - the hotel could definitely do with new towels, they were all frayed and worn, not the expected standard.

Breakfast was a bit strange - we ate twice at the restaurant at night (they do a great sushi buffet, highly recommended) and once at the beach restaurant (one of the best green curries we've had, and we've had a few) so we know for a fact that they do great food. Why was the breakfast then so standard? Nothing really stood out - why bother with four juices, if none of them is freshly squeezed? Breakfast was definitely not the great beginning of the day that we've experienced in other hotels, and Akyra should definitely consider improving it.

The restaurants were good, as mentioned, but very few people dined there - so atmosphere was very lacking. A pity - and something that stopped us from eating there more often.

Housekeeping was very inconsistent. It seemed random if and how many towels were allocated to our room, used glasses were not replaced, the bed was once turned down but drapes weren't closed...

One last thing: It seems that the GM is very present at this website. We think we saw him a couple of times, but he never addressed us or introduced himself to us, which we both found odd. In fact, we missed a little bit the intimate "boutique" atmosphere: some of the staff got to know us and vice versa, which was great, but it wasn't the majority. At a hotel of this size, you don't expect to have to give your room number at breakfast to the same person three days in a row!

Room Tip: The suites were great, if you don't mind the outdoor bathroom and don't expect to much in th...

First of all ignore the pictures.they have nothing to do with the reality....we asked for a room with double bed and they show us a room with 2 single beds.this room had a very bad dump smell.we complained and we went to a room with double bed but their drains from the toilet and the shower were blocked...and they never been fixed.the swimming pool is very small.their cocktails awful and the breakfast average..their mini bar has only coca cola, fanta and beers....too bad because the whole idea of the design of the place is very good....
We booked for 10 days, we stayed 4 and we payed for 5.fair enough......we didn't like the location at all. Chaweng is not the area that we were looking.it took us 3 days to find the perfect area for us and we booked to beach republic...see the review....

GOOD- staff very friendly, good English, always available when you needed them. Room ( we had a deluxe room) nice size, modern design with TV incl film channels. Clean. Breakfast good/ok, Location excellent; quiet, 10 mins drive from airport, on a sandy beach with a few restaurants and bars along it, 10 min walk (left out of the front) to a main street with hundreds of bars, shops and markets.
Grounds beautiful- tranquil haven. Pool well maintained.
We used the laundry service- 920b for ALL the washing you had we though this was quite expensive but we are staying in Thailand for a couple more weeks so we needed it. We were delighted- the washing was returned the next evening, folded and ironed. They managed to get suntan lotion marks off and revive a shirt i was planning to bin.
BAD- spa was expensive but if you walk 2 mins down the beach you will find a number of massage places at a 5th of the price which provide a wonderful service. Rubbish was sweped in by the sea, the local restaurants and hotels cleared it daily but it needs to be done more regularly.
I would stay here again.
RECOMMEND-
an evening walk to the busy market shops
buying lunch from the locals who sell food on the beach
Spa or beauty treatment on the beach
Restaurant TopTen on your walk to the main street- great food and service.
We went on a few excursions-the island is very beautiful
