“Poor unorganized service hotel that hides behind the word "boutique resort"”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed June 21, 2012

Our family booked 3 beach front villa for 3 night in March2012. The hotel itself is quite beautiful but the service is extremely poor. On the first day, we couldn't check in in one of the room until 6 pm because the hotel cannot manage the previous guest who didn't want to check out! Then, on our last night there, we dined at their Japanese restuarant and 3 of us got food poisoning. When we insisted that they investigate what's wrong with the food, nothing happened! And the worst part is when we checked out, they mis-managed the bills and they double charged us for an extra night per room (which are 3 nights in total). After a long discussion that almost made us miss our flight, we had to let them charge our credit cards. Once we got back, we didn't heard anything from them until we called to check and they said it's their misunderstanding and they would cancel the charges. That's it! After all the troubles that they put us through, not even one decent apology from them.

So, if you plan to stay there, maybe you should think twice.

Dear WanwimonO,
Greeting's from the akyra Chura Samui & thank you for sharing your feed back with regards your stay at the resort from the 22 to 25 March 2012.

With reference to the points raised in your review, about the resort & the service that is offered.
On the day of checking in at the resort this was around midday, (Standard check in time is at 2.00 pm ) to which two of the suite rooms where available for you to check in to. The resort provided you with a courtesy room, for you to use, until the other suite room was available, this point has not been, mentioned in your review, along with the offering of two 60 mins spa with complements, for the inconvenience caused to you.

With regards to your dining experience at Suikin, we have the strict controls on food preparation & service, we had no other comments from other guests dining of any discomfit, from the food that is served. we asked to for your feed back on other locations that you had dined at outside of the resort during your stay with us.

On the billing i apologize again for the delay in the check out on the day, with regards to the follow up we have checked through & we can see there was no over charging.

based on the experiences raised in your review, we do pride ourselves on the genuine Thai hospitality that we offer to all our guests, at all times.

2 of 5 stars Reviewed June 15, 2012

After we stayed at Akayrn Resort & Spa for 4 nights, we spent the following 2 nights at Akyra Chura.
1. Front Office staff : When we arrived to the Reception Counter, there were two Front Office staff just ran their eyes over us then looked back to their computers! (They're so laid-back!) A moment later, we got the check-in done. We asked the female staff (who led us to our room) if we could have a late check-out around 14:00 hrs. cause our flight would be at 17:50 hrs. but the staff told us it depends on the room arrangement on the day we leave. So my wife asked her (three times!) to make sure she would keep us informed once she has the answer & we have her promised. But the staff has not given any notice on this matter afterward. So on the day before leaving, we went to the Reception Counter & got the answer right from the other staff after he checking from computer, then we booked the transportation to the airport as well.

2. The Spa Centre: The staff from the Spa Centre has overly used fore-arm to massage my wife which made her felt suffering more then Enjoying! We understand some guest might love this kind of massage, just it was so different from the massage we had in Phuket!

3. When we told a staff (name tag "SIT" , we saw him once responsible for luggage handling) at the Reception Counter about the malfunction of our room key card. He said the key card was OK but my wife repeated we couldn't open the door. But the staff insisted it's OK in rude attitude then he followed us to our room & found out he was wrong! He asked us to collect the key card half an hour later at Reception Counter! Shouldn't he send us back the key card in such case?

4. One of the most deserve a credit would be the foods & beverage at Sui-Kin (apart from breakfast we had lunch at Sui-Kin twice) but one morning, we found a cockroach inside watermelon juice!

5. The balcony was too close to neighbouring blocks & walkways which was no privacy at all. The room also very small! We're glad that we only stay for 2 nights otherwise we have to figure out some more room for the stuff from luggages!

6. After my wife has done the check-out & we're ready to dine at Sui-Kin (before the hotel car send us to the airport), the staff "SA" shown up & asked my wife to return her a hotel voucher! We both so confused! But we suggested we take a sit at Sui-Kin then sort it out ("SA" said ok & left us at Sui-Kin). All we found just our copies from photo-copier (we used to make own copies of traveling documents just incase.) & then my wife recall that this staff "SA" wasn't there while the other staff "BANK" (the same one who took care of our check-out) handle our check-in! My wife was really angry & she has to clarify this matter first otherwise she couldn't eat her lunch! So we returned to Reception Counter (but "SA" wasn't there) & ask the staff "BANK" why "SA" has been asking about the hotel voucher? "BANK" seemed don't have a clue then at the same time, "SA" came back & "BANK" got my (original) hotel voucher from his drawer! My wife told "SA" that if we haven't given the hotel voucher, would they still give us the room? it's totally ridiculous! Finally "SA" apologize to my wife but my wife already got a headache ...!

7. House-keeping staff were very friendly whenever we met, they have been polite & smile to us which was the contrast to the Reception Counter staff!

We don't mean to be picky and we even didn't expect the hotel staff/service would as good as we experienced in Phuket. But that's what we've been through in this hotel!

Dear Wai Kit Li,

Greetings from the akyra Chura Samui

Thank you for staying with us, with regards to the points that have been raised in your review of the resort, during your stay. First i would apologize to you, in that high service standards that we set in the resort in all areas, of the operation did not meet your expectation.
To clarify on the points raised in your review.

The standard check out in all resorts & hotels is at 12.00 noon being that we are running high occupy this month, this is not possible to offer straight away, due to incoming guests
which check in from 1.00 pm
The room that you were a signed too is our most popular room, type being a Grand Deluxe on an upper floor, taking in to account the balcony area, with the room, the total space covers 44 sq. meters. WE do have larger premium rooms available at 70 sq meters at the resort.

With regards to the massage, for your wife, our Spa therapists have a consultation prior to the massage, on the strength required & during the massage check back with the guest are they OK with the strength of the massage.

The point raised about breakfast, being that the area is open to the elements, the item that was in the watermelon juice was a small fruit fly & not as stated in your review, the Asst manager on duty replaced the glass, that was served & the jug on the buffet, this follow up from our team was not placed in your review. We adhere to strict food hygiene, standards with in the resort at all times.

Our service that is offered through out the resort, is of a very high standard in all areas, from back to front of house areas, we thank you for your feed back on our housekeeping team & the points raised on the service in other areas of the resort.

Warmest regards

Colin Healy I Resident Manager

Unfortunately we were very disappointed with the resort the minute we saw the rooms, the pool and the beach.. Luxurious resort lifestyle? I would hardly call dark tiny rooms with a view to a neighboring room 3 meters away understated luxury.. resort using recycled water in other words treated wastewater (sewage) soaking rooms and resort with a peculiar smell that I wouldn't call pleasant. This could be felt as soon as you arrive in the resort.
The whole experience started the wrong way and was very obvious, no one helped us with the bags to the reception, no welcome drink or towels.. Booked deluxe and grand deluxe, on the website there is no single image where you wouldn't assume you are close to the sea, but in fact your room will be most likely on 1st floor with no natural light since the rooms are packed in so close next to each other..
Now the pool and the beach ( off season) was fully packed with no free single chair, the staff at the pool simply told us to come later or he will flag us later when a chair is available! really?!
That was enough for us to checkout without staying a night.. The resident hotel manager did nothing except charge us for 1 night stay..
The beach is not at all like in the images, it is by no means a quiet clean strip of sand with crystal blue water as shown in the pictures.. which I find very deceiving the way its portrayed on the webiste.. All around we checked out despite the extra charges and moved to another place - Kirikayan in Bo Phut which we found excellent value for money with exceptionally kind staff and very relaxing.. Perfect resort that I would call understated luxury..

Dear MCJULIA

thank you for your comments & feed back with reference to the resort.

the watering of the gardens is with treated water is a way to prevent mosquito's with in the resort grounds.

Based on the layout out & size of the resort not all rooms, can have the most desired views & location within the resort & this is also based on the date, of booking & the resort occupy.

With regards to the pool area being full, on the day of your arrival the resort was running a high occupy, & the time that you arrived the area around the pool was full, it would be unfair to ask other guests to leave.

All the beach's in Thailand are all public, based on the current season that we are in, we have no control over the current tidal conditions. The beach in front of the resort is cleaned first thing in the morning. There is also sand bar to the left of our resort 200 metres where guests can walk right out to see & enjoy further swimming, this is actually the most popular option to walk out & relax & swim freely. (this is what is pictured in the resorts web site)

Regards the charge made for your 2 night booking, based on the terms & conditions of your booking as a gesture of good will, a one night charge for both rooms, was waved as a token of good will, & this point has not been reflected, in your review.

warm regards

During our stay on 27-31 May, we were so glad that we have picked this hotel.
Well deserve the rating!
Airport transfer service: after we gone thru the immigration n luggage pick up, the driver is already standing at the pick up point waiting for us. No matter with luggage assistance, the condition of the vehicle, or driver's greeting, everything are just so good. Only 5 mins drive and we arrived at the hotel!
Hotel Lobby: nice interior design, although it not big but good enough with comfortable atmosphere, waiting area with seating and warm colors cushions. Refreshing towels and nice welcome drinks were delivered upon our arrival. However Check in time was a bit too long, took 25 mins until the whole thing is completed.
We stay at ur Grand deluxe room, it's bigger than we saw on the website, to us it's like a 1 bedroom suite, day curtain installed. Seating room with dining tables & chairs, TV with DVD players. Very impressive! Small Sofa keep slide down, not comfortable tho!
Bedroom, again is big! The bed n pillows r so so sooo comfortable. TV & DVD players are also available in the bedroom. The safe was not functioning, we told house keeping when they clean our room but no one ever follow up with that! Daily cleaning at the room: we did hav doubts whether the floor were swiped.
There were water on the floor near both bedroom and seating room window when we arrived. Not sure if it is a leak after the rain but the staff who escort us found out before we do and arranged someone to clean it right away.
Bathroom is nice with that space I don't understand why there are no bathtub on the plan when u build it. A little disappointed only 1bedroom suite have bathtub.
Big balcony but the floor was sticky.
Breakfast was not bad, i like the Fried eggs&ommelets fresh made on request.
2 mins walk to the Pool, it is small but good enough for us, very nice view facing the beach. Beach is great but not for ideal for swimming. Nice and quite location but only 15 mins walk to central.
Japanese restaurant is great, the sushi rice were abit too soft but taste very yummy especially the spicy tuna roll!
Check out procedure was simple and quick!
Overall is still very good and we did enjoy our stay with you.

Greetings from the akyra Chura Samui & thank you for taking time to share your experiences with us regarding your recent stay with us at the resort. All the comments raised with in your review are shared with the whole team at the resort. I have made note on the points raised during your stay in terms of check in & the rooms. With regards to the point on not being able to swim in the sea, the tide at present is very low, due to the seasonal changes in the weather.

Once again thank you for staying with us & we look forward to welcoming you back, to the akyra Chura Samui

Friendly staff, clean hotel. About 20-30 minutes walk to/from Chaweng Centre (100B for two ppl) with Songtheauw. Quiet strech of beach. Pool is on the small side.

Room has hairdryer, fridge but could have provided more floor towels. No bathtub. Fabulous mattress. I have deluxe room with a big balcony with a bit of seaview. No lift.

Good selection at breakfast - 2 local dishes and the usual western affair. The prics of small beer is about 12THB. Not cheap. Afterall it is a mid-high range hotel.

Spa has only two masseurs, so I am not able to get a slot on the day itself. Too bad.

Japanese decor makes it looks chic but it is definitely lacking the luxurious feeling.

Just checked out from the akyra hotel in koh samui - we paid the upgrade to a one bedroom suite with sea view looking for a touch of luxury after a hectic three nights in Bangkok and four in Phuket.

The hotel markets itself as luxury - I'm afraid in my opinion they fail to deliver on that score. I did see the size and layout of the hotel's standard rooms and am glad we chose an upgrade as I am certain my score for the hotel would be much less if not in the suite.

Although a good size I feel the designers of the hotel and these one bedroom suites in particular did not design and build the rooms with the guests in mind...

The lounge area of the suites consists of a padded area with loose cushions against a concrete wall - far from comfortable.

We do not go on holiday to watch tv but it is a nice facility to have however the designer of the hotel chose to place the tv on a wooden cabinet that is only visible of sitting on the very uncomfortable padded area - if you sit in bed you will not be watching tv in these rooms!!! I am not suggesting the room have two rooms but for a relatively new hotel why not have the tv fixed to a turntable?

The bathroom in a one bedroom suite is out doors and includes rain shower over bath, separate shower and his / her sinks - a nice touch but in mosquito season each time you went to / from the bathroom you had to slide a door open giving the mosquito free path into your room. The hotel do supply a plug in repellant and a citronella burner for the exterior but neither is particularly effective. Also who'se idea was it to put only cold water at the two sinks in the bathroom??? When I shave or wash hands I like to have the option of hot water!!!

Pool area is adequate but the hotel has no facilities for families and I was surprised to see young children playing in the pool when couples were trying to relax - the hotel website states it is "Perfect for honeymoons, relaxation or just for rekindling your romance with travel" if they plan to achieve this they seriously need to consider having a policy of children over a certain age.

The hotel states two restaurants and can say we had a fantastic meal at the hotel's Japanese restaurant which the chef should be commended however the other restaurant is actually a couple of tables set up next to the pool and the rest on the beach. Lunch was fair at this restaurant but we didn't opt to go for dinner here.

Breakfast was adequate but either from a supply issue or cost saving exercise bacon was only available for two days breakfast at the end of our stay?

The hotel is relatively clean however we had a very good room attendant for most of the stay but on one day she was replaced by a younger member of staff who scarcely touched the room.

Areas for the management to look at would be for a senior member of staff to check room cleanliness before a room attendant says it is clean. Our room had light bulbs out and a broken plug on arrival - although quickly fixed a check earlier in the day before guests check in would be an idea.

Ir management read this review also look at the beach towels provided - they are of a poor quality and never smell particularly clean...

There are masses of hotels and resorts in koh samui with more added all the time - would I stay at akyra chura? Probably not for the money paid and issues stated.
