Myself and my boyfriend travelled to Koh Samui in February 2006 along with some of his family. We were there for a family holiday and also to attend a marrage blessing which took place at another hotel further north of Koh samui. (I forget the name) we stayed at the Lakeside for seven nights.
Overall our stay at the Lakeside Hotel was fantastic. The rooms were huge with a king size bed, wardrobe, electronic safe, self controlled air-con, large tv, mini bar, good desk space with a big mirror and the bathrooms were lovely with wonderful power showers over a bath, clean sink with lots of surface space for toiletries. We also had a small balcony which you could stand out on, the view we had was of the next door building, there are better views available of the lake oposite but we did not feel the need for a view as we were never on the balcony or in the room much anyway. Bottled water and towels were replaced daily along with the room being cleaned.
The staff were very friendly and kind. We were always greeted with huge smiles and hello's when going in and out of the hotel and after only a couple of days there all the front reception staff knew who we were and always had our room key ready with out us having to ask.
There was a great outdoor patio area over looking the lake which was where we had breakfast some mornings, (the restaurant was open till about 10pm but we always ate in other places), it was a very relaxing way to slowly wake up especially after the traveling over! The food available was great, for breakfast you could choose from continental-fresh fruit, coffee & juice, Thai-any form of fried rice or even a fry up, food was made to order with the chef cooking in an outside kitchen behind the seating area.
The location of the hotel was extremely central (opposite Tropical Murphy's Irish Bar & Baan Samui Hotel). We would often walk through the Baan Samui to get access to the beach and this never caused a problem!
Ok so thats all the good bits now for the bad!
When we arrived we found they did not have a room ready for us even though we had booked months in advance. Some family members had arrived a coulple of days before us and so had checked into their rooms, we requested a camp bed to add into one of our family members rooms which worked out fine and the following day we were allocated our room which was conveniently located across the hallway to where we were the night before! What would have happened if we were travelling alone though? I would not have liked to trawl the strip lookin for a hotel at 11pm which was the time we arrived to Koh Samui!!!!
As we had made a large group booking in advance we were told we had a discount rate, but when it came to paying, this price had inceased by a few hundred Baht. We managed to agree on a price which was still more than what we had expected, although the hotel was still excellent value for money, we did not appreciate the increase in price as we were a group of nearly 20 people and had brought a lot of business their way and I felt this was not acknowledged.
The hotel did not have a pool which before arriving I did not think would be a problem but, after spending a couple of days trying to relax on the beach I was fed up of the vendors hassling me to buy their goods. To be able to retreat to a pool side would have been great. (Although we did use the pool at the 'Amari' further up Chaweng beach towards the end of our stay as some other family members were staying there! It would feel a little uncomfortable as it was not strictly for us!)
The last point might seem a little trivial but I will include it anyway! The aircon in the lobby and restaurant at the Lakeside was always on so high! I appreciate some people might have loved this as the outside temp would get very hot, but for us we found it uncomfortable as the extremety of coming from a warm and humid outside air to a freezing cold and dry inside air was a little too much for us but as I said it was trivial!
The Lakeside Residence is one of the mid range luxury hotels that can be found on the island and we loved staying there especially as my fella is one to realy enjoy the luxuries in life such as the power shower and a mini bar, so if u want the luxurious stay whilst in Koh Samui I would definately recommend this hotel regardless of the negative points. As soon as you step outside this hotel you are in the middle of the busy bar, restaurant and shopping area so no need for taxi's. The noise was not a problem once u were inside the hotel either, as I have read in other reviews this can be a problem for those staying the hotels offering outside cabin type rooms.
Hope this proves useful for some!
No matter what the bad things are on a trip to Thailand, at the time they never seem to be that important and you atill have a fab time!!
