We arrived Treasure Cay Hotel (TCH) the last 3 days of our 2-week vacation. We had been island and hotel hopping and ended our holiday at this quaint hotel. The condo’s are at least 20 years old and in pretty good shape. They are painted in Caribbean colors and range from hotel rooms to one bedroom condo’s with kitchens. We were traveling during the slow season so our room rate was very inexpensive for the one bedroom condo less than $200 a night (including tax).
The condo rooms were not large, we had a fully equipped kitchen, table, living room, two full bathrooms and upstairs loft/bedroom. The décor was early 90’s but given we weren’t in the room much I did not mind the outdated furniture and thought the hotel had character. TCH had an on sight full service restaurant, bar, pool (which was not appealing) and across the street about ¼ mile you could spend the day at the beach and have breakfast/lunch at Coco Beach Bar.
Next to the hotel is a grocery store, post office, bank, bakery, liquor store, car rental ($75/ day) and golf cart rental ($40/ day). Because everything was accessible via walking a few steps renting a golf cart would be a complete waste of money. We rented a car for two days and drove to the north end of the island (Crown Harbour) as well as to Marsh Harbor and down to Winding Bay (Private Ritz Carlton Resort) don’t bother going unless you want to spend $200 for lunch!
Abacos is a very quiet island and Treasure Cay is even more quiet. This is a place to enjoy quiet time with your spouse or good family entertainment. If you have children I would recommend going during the busy season. While we were there (slow season) there were no kids, had we had children this would have been very difficult as there would be no one for them to play with during the day. Being married with no kids we were able to mix with the other guests that were at the hotel (25 people max!). This is not a place to have a wild party, it is quiet and other than a local guy that plays good music, sings and dances at Typsey’s bar that will be the biggest party you are going to see.
Taxi cost to/from Marsh Harbor Airport $85.00 one way. Food prices are 55% higher than US, meat and dairy areextremely expensive. Many guests brought their own food in their luggage. Custom’s does not take the food so feel free to bring meat, dry goods, and any other expensive items to offset the prices. Beer is also expensive, plan to pay $5 at the bar or $2.50 at the liquor store. Reminder that the locals are not getting rich off you. The cost to transport food from the heartland of the US, to Florida then onto a barge into the Bahamas is extremely expensive.
Bug spray: we brought 4 bottles with us for our 14 day stay on Abacos and Out Islands. We successfully used two bottles and never ran out which is important. Also we brought more than we thought we would use because if we lost a bottle purchasing a bottle down there will cost you over $15.
If you are looking for a nice place to stay that does not have a lot of frills than TCH is a nice place to stay. If you are celebrating a special anniversary, having a wedding or are older and are looking to spend your honeymoon I might consider spending the extra money at The Bahamas Beach Club Resort (BBC) which is ½ mile down the street. That resort is 3 times the cost, brand new and polished. TCH is older, has everything you will need but lacks the polish of BBC.
