“Great setting but the hotel has seen better days”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed December 27, 2012

The hotel is set high up above the Pacific with great views and a lovely terrace and restaurant area. However when we stayed at the start of Dec 2012 several areas of the terrace were closed as the wooden structure was rotten and unsafe. The beach (reached via steep steps of the road) is not very inviting as the bay is used as a mooring area for the dive and fishing boats.
The reception area is pleasant but checking is is slightly unnerving as you have to sign various papers stating you must pay significant sums of money if you loose your key etc.and have to sign a blank credit card slip (make sure you get it back when you check out). They seem to lack a system to charge for drinks on the terrace and with meals so it is worth checking your bill carefully when you check out.
The rooms, and indeed the whole resort was the dirtiest of any of the hotels we stayed in during our 2 weeks in Costa Rica. In our first room we had a broken fridge (it was empty) and several of the other guests reported non functioning TVs, toilets, jacuzzi, patio doors etc.. On the second days the hot water pipe under our sink became loose and flooded the whole room in scolding water to a depth of several inches. The staff and reception seemed unconcerned leaving us to clear the room and not sending anyone to look at it for nearly 20 minutes by which time the water was flowing out of the door.
The food was very disappointing for a 4 star hotel. The breakfasts were the poorest of anywhere we stayed with a limited choice. The food served for lunch and dinner was very basic (chicken or fish with sauce followed by fried pineapple and ice cream being typical).
The resort had the feel of a 4 star resort that fallen on hard times and was now cutting all the corners it could to make ends meet. Just glad we were only staying 2 nights. Very handy for the airport at Liberia (20 mins away by car)

Room Tip: The rooms high up (400s) have the best views and are next to the small infinity pool

I wanna start by saying it was a nightmare trying to get to the place. There's no sign at the entrance to let you know you're there. We past by it several times before realizing the entrance we were looking at could be the way to go... Terrible feeling being lost and having no one to ask... The address they have at their website is completely useless.
Besides that, I loved the place. They have a very profesional dive center and the service was great. I also loved the beach. You can do scuba diving or just snorkeling on the beach. The swimming pool was very nice too.
Ocotal, El Coco and Hermosa really are beaches anyone would love to visit in Guanacaste.

This was more than I expected!!! A true dream - a place to relax, explore, and meet some of the nicest people on Earth!! I can't think of anything that I did not like. The front desk staff were helpful, friendly and personable. Housekeeping, dining area staff, diving shop staff and groundskeepers were also wonderful, helpful, personable and friendly. They always had a smile on their faces and laughed at our jokes or comments. I feel like I found a new place to call home - I will return to this resort and area -- and would highly recommend it. You will experience the novelty of the area and will feel like a welcomed guest. It is not a "cookie cutter" property like some high-end chain hotels.

Room Tip: If you want to be closer to the hotel lobby and dining area, stay in a room in the 300s. All views a...

Great price! Beautiful pools, beaches, and location! Traditional breakfast included which was a blessing. Food for lunches and dinners average to slightly better than average but no concern because lots of great restaurants within a short taxi ride away. The housekeeping staff were very conscientious. The front desk staff were very helpful and gracious. To save money we bought sandwich fixings (small fridge in room) and chips for lunches. We did a couple day tours and the resort staff helped us arrange them which was a blessing. Overall, this was a vacation of a lifetime!!!!!

What an amazing resort! From breakfast overlooking the water, to the tide pools around the rock, to the infinity pool, to the pool bar and dive shop- everything was perfect! The front desk was amazing. The all-day tour with Mardigi Tours was great too!!! I can't wait to go back!!!

We just returned from spending six days at the Ocotal Beach Resort which were relaxing and very enjoyable. We found, contrary to many reviews that the rooms and grounds were well kept and clean. The restaurant (Roca Bruja) near the reception area had one of the finest views I've ever seen. We had the (included) breakfast buffet each morning which offered your choice of eggs, omelet, plantains, black beans and rice, dry cereal, toast, and french toast. The food was good. We had no other meals at the restaurant. The prices for drinks in the bar/restaurant were very reasonable at Beer and Drinks for about $2.50 and $5.00 respectively.

The rooms were comfortable and clean and everything functioned perfectly. The bathrooms were old but fully serviceable. The only thing I noticed that some folks (not us) might think was wrong with the bathroom was a couple of place where the tub was chipped, which in my opinion is certainly not worthy of downgrading the resort in a review.

The resort provides van transportation within the property. All we did was call the front desk and they sent the van; longest wait was less than 10 minutes. Don't worry about the hills, which are significant.

One word of advice: Check out the day before you leave if you have an early flight or plan to leave the resort early. The front desk does not open until 6:00 AM.

We had a great trip and plan to return two more times in 2013.

Room Tip: The rooms with the best view are the 400's. These room are the highest elevation and have by fa...

This is the first time ever writing a review..I felt compelled because of the two really negative nastily review that i saw..I was on that Passover trip and yes the hotel is not five star and was never made out to be but it was comfortable and very scenic..There was hotel security as well as private plainsclothes security which most people didnt realize beacuse of some important people on the trip. For someone to say they couldnt get orange juice is really stretching..The food was plentiful and it was unlimited buffet at all meals so you can eat to your fullest.Kosher Expeditions has been around for years and i have been on a couple of their trips and was very satisfied..I know that last year they switched hotel venues to a more modern setting but keeping to the costa rican atmosphere.
