We decided to visit the Abbey at Fontevraud kind of as a spur of the moment idea and had to search quickly for a Hotel where our dog would also be welcome. The La Marine caught my eye as I was searching through possible locations and considering the experience, turned out to be a very good choice.
Our GPS didn't find the location - well it got us to the right street, but told us we were "at our destination" about half a mile before we got there. The La Marine is an unassuming, rather old building near the edge of Montsoreau. On arrival we were politely greeted by a young lady who spoke English well enough to get along and be understood. We were shown to our room - more like a suite. To the right the bedroom, a large room, furnished in antique style with a bed, desk, a table and some chairs. The bed was quite nice and comfortable, the remaining furnishings were well worn, but functional. In typical French style, the toilet and bath are in separate rooms. This is convenient if someone wants to use the toilet while the other showers, but is inconvenient since you have to go from one room to the next to wash your hands after visiting the toilet. But that is just the way it is here in France, not a big deal. Unfortunately I did not check the internet site of the hotel carefully enough, so on the first night - it was a bit warm and humid, we did not realize we had air conditioning. That is not a given in small towns, but turned out to be a great help, and the room was much more comfortable from then on.
The bedroom had a large door with small balcony, adding to the brightness in the room. And there was free wireless internet as well. What a surprise.
Our room was away from the street overlooking the small garden. Had the weather been nicer, we might have made use of the attractive little square, surrounded by a high wall and adorned with some fountains.
The next day the Hotel was attended by the owner, whose name we unfortunately we did not retain. She served breakfast and was very attentive, checking to be sure we had what we needed and that everything was ok.
The restaurant is not always open, but we had reserved the next night. We were the only guests and were served a spectacular four course meal. The owner came by, spoke with us, served everything very nicely and turned out to be just an entirely pleasant and wonderful experience.
The dining room is a pretty small with maybe a dozen tables, decorated in kind of a marine style with a large center table where the some items for breakfast are served. It is bright and pleasant and fits very well with the entire ambiance.
We do plan to visit the Loire Valley again next year, and the only reason we might not stay here is that Montsoreau isn't the best location to start scouting all the castles along the Loire, but there are a few sites nearby to include the Chateau about a block from the Hotel and Chinon is not far either. Our thanks to the lovely lady who owns the La Marine and all the best for success.
