This one is special! We booked it purely as a convenient stop over, roughly halfway between the extreme south of France we were returning from, and the Channel port of Cherbourg. But as we got within a few miles of Le Relais de Saint Preuil the landscape changed subtly to rolling limestone hills covered in vineyards and fields of blazing sunflowers. And then we spotted Le Relais across the valley nestling on the hillside looking every bit just like The High Chaparall!
But the horses are long gone and Jean-Luc and Christine must have spent a fortune renovating and converting this 17th century coaching inn into a luxury guesthouse of some considerable style.
You can choose from one of five guestroom rooms………or a family suite for five………..or pick from one of three apartments, all different, all finished to a very high standard using the best features of the old coaching inn. It all smells new, even the massive old beams that must be hundreds of years old. And each room is fitted with new, ‘antique-look’,beautifully handcrafted furniture. It may be old style but you get the essential modern touches of room telephone, safe deposit box, etc, etc, too. We chose Le Patachon with four poster bed……………and sheets so soft……you just floated off to sleee……..zzzzzzzzzz
But it offers so much more than just accommodation. There is a new tennis court, a quality swimming pool, sauna, mini-gym, barbeque, children’s playground, guest room, with TV and an internet Kiosk, free non-alcoholic mini-bar all looking out on the valley to the front of the property. The guest book says they can lend you bicycles! There’s even a meeting room for business users looking for some inspirational setting for their conference or meeting, whilst in a relaxed and peaceful environment.
Dinner (tables d’hotes) was the best we had in our two week holiday. At 35 euros each it was excellent value. Starting at 8pm Jean-Luc came in to the dining room with our aperitif. Coming in with in five bottles, he proceeded to tell us the story and history of each wine or cognac before serving us with our choices. Aperitif savoured, Christine then introduced us to the starter, all made from local produce in the same manner that the wines and cognac her husband served were grown and made within a few kilometres of Le Relais de Saint Preuil. I didn’t need my wife, who has been a chef, to tell me the main course of Beouf Bourguinon was cooked to perfection. It was all finished off with an exquisite home-made sweet and coffee before Jean-Luc once again appeared with the cognac! It was 11.45pm before we rose from the table having sampled the finest local food and wines, and learnt so much about it’s most famous product, the cognac wines.
Jean-Luc and Christine have plans for so much more; cooking courses, vintage car hire, vineyard tours. If you want it, they can organise it for you.
Our only regret….we could only stay one night. But in one night we saw a special guesthouse in a special area. We WILL be back, but we think we will have to book well in advance. Word is going to get around, and it is going to be a popular choice for so many types of visitor!
