“Best place to stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 6, 2012

Wanted to visit the Isle of Barra and saw that Northbay House had excellent reviews everywhere, so I booked it. The reviewers were right. Graham and Mary are truly wonderful and dedicated hosts! Nothing was too much trouble for them and they went out of their way to make sure that I felt right at home. Make sure to ask them what life is like living on a remote island, because they have interesting insights for you.The house is beautiful, the lounge modern yet cozy.
Breakfast is excellent and one gets to chat with the other guests to talk about Barra and Scotland.
The bed was easily one of the best ones I have slept in, an absolute dream!
I would like to go back to Barra and when I do, I will book the Northbay House again, for sure.

Nothing was too much trouble for the owners, who went out of their way to be kind, helpful and friendly. All the facilities were excellent and the food was first class. This was a real home from home for us. If you want a b&b (or self catering) on Barra you must stay at this one !

Lovely establishment ran by extremely friendly & welcoming owners Mary & Graham. Excellent accommodation with a fantastic breakfast. The owners could not be more helpful. The B&B is located in a beautiful spot in the North East of the island ten minutes away from the airport by taxi.

A local bus service takes a circular route round the island and passes the front of the house. The main settlement Castlebay is in the south of the island and can be reached by the afore mentioned bus, taxi or just take a scenic walk. Castlebay has an excellent Indian restaurant down at the harbour (Cafe Kisimul) which is well worth a visit but best to book in advance for evenings.

Barra is a stunning island with some of the most beautiful beaches and scenery you will ever see. It is the ideal place to visit if you fancy chilling out for a few days & can be reached by boat from Oban or by air from Glasgow. My preference is by air - see the attached photos which are self explanatory!

Coming from Canada we didn't know exactly what to expect, but Mary and Graham welcomed us with open arms in a very genuine way. After a six hour ferry ride, we were able to relax in a beautiful room with an adjoining lounge. Nothing was too much trouble. After a great nights sleep, we enjoyed a delicious breakfast before setting out to explore Barra. I would highly recommend this B&B to anyone who likes a little pampering and great breakfasts. Someday we will return.

Northbay House is set at the head of a loch in a very peaceful setting. We received a very friendly welcome from Mary and Graham. They showed us to our room. This was very comfortable with an ensuite shower room. We also had the use of a lounge area outside our room. This too was very comfortable and cosy. Everything was spotlessly clean. There was lots of information about Barra to read.Mary provided us with delicious scones on arrival and offered us cake each day when we returned. This was really appreciated. Breakfasts were fantastic. There was a very wide choice and they keep us going for the day.Mary and Graham were very willing to help and give advise when asked. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay there and would strongly recommend Northbay House to anyone visiting Barra. When we left it was like saying goodbye to friends.

Northbay House - a former school - has real character and is set in an ideal location at the head of a lovely loch about 12 minutes from Castlebay.
Our room was extremely comfortable and spotlessly clean. Having a delightful sitting area made our evenings a pleasure as we had so much to read and learn about the former school and Barra itself.
Mary and Graham made us feel "at home" and were very motivated to make sure our stay on Barra was the best they could make it.
The breakfasts offered a wide choice and I recommend the smoked haddock! Being offered scones and pancakes when we arrived or came in reminded us of wonderful highland hospitality offered to us over 40 years ago!!
I recommend Northbay House unreservedly. I have never written to Tripadvisor before but felt I had to share this quality B&B with others.

Room Tip: The double bedroom is very spacious with a very comfortable bed and good sized ensuite.

A lovely converted school at the head of a loch. The room was spacious and comfortable, and there was a lounge area outside the room, which was nice.

I can't comment on the breakfast, as we had a very early ferry so chose to miss breakfast and eat on the boat. I should stress that this was our choice, as Mary was very willing to get up early to cook for us.

Two points - we had the double room upstairs at the back, and this has no windows you can look out from. One window is a roof light and the other is at knee level. Not so much of a problem as we only stayed one night, but if you're staying for longer you might like to avoid this room.

Also, at £80 this was the most expensive B&B we stated in during our tour of the Outer Hebrides. May be standard for Barra, but rather pricey.

Northbay House is a sympathetic conversion of the former Victorian school at Morgan. Situated at the head of Loch na h-Obbe, this is a quiet and sheltered location from which to explore the beautiful Island of Barra. Visitors are welcome to sit in the mature gardens, overlooking the loch or when the weather is wild, relax in the cosy lounge with a selection of books and magazines. The ground floor en-suite twin room is suitable for wheelchair users, with a large, wet-room style bathroom and level access to the breakfast room, but not the upstairs lounge. The first floor, en-suite double room retains the original window design, at floor level. All rooms have generous hospitality trays and there is a wide choice for breakfast. Home baking is offered either in the afternoon or at suppertime. Free WiFi is available 24 hours although the signal varies in bad weather!
