“Chalet Matsuzaka was lovely, in a very friendly resort, slopes for all levels plus skiing over to Italy which was fun!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 22, 2012

Really pleased we chose this resort as the snow was amazing already and the slopes weren't crowded either. The views from the top of the slopes were fabulous. The weather was great so we could ski over the border to Italy where there were lots of beautiful wide sunny runs so plenty of variety and every day was different. Chalet Matsuzaka was beautiful and relaxing and the owners Fay and Mike made us feel really welcome right from the start. Our room was pretty spacious with great views from our balcony across the valley and there were plenty of clear star-lit nights to enjoy it over a glass of wine! The Japanese Spa area was spotlessly clean and completely private, a real treat for soaking away our aches and pains. It is obvious that Fay and Mike take great pride in their Chalet and we really enjoyed their personal, friendly service which made it the highlight of our trip to Europe!

Room Tip: Our room at the front of the Chalet (2nd floor) had a balcony with great views :-)

Somewhat bemused by the reviews stayed earlier this year and frankly it is lacking in a lot of areas not least the food!
We were expecting restaurant quality food but received at best average home cooking.
Apparently full breakfast only available on special days!
Don't expect a selection of freshly made cakes in the dining room after a hard day on the slopes, a piece each under cling film outside your room is reality.
Last breakfast at 9.30, last transfer to the lift 8.30 hmmm!
Not enough comfy seating to accomodate all guests before supper.
This establishment is geared around the convenience of the owners sadly.
In conclusion it is very clean, the rooms are good but for real feel good factor you need so much more.

We thank you for your comments. We feel very unhappy that you were not able to speak to us during your stay as we could have, maybe, made your stay more enjoyable.
The breakfasts are between 8am and 10am - with a provision given to all customers that other times are available with prior agreement.
Four different themed breakfasts are proposed during the week - including Japanese, English, Pancakes etc. A full range of continental breakfast is served every day - fresh fruit, yoghurts, cereals, eggs, freshly baked croissants, pain au chocolats, pain au raisins.. and we cater for requests (the belgians like ham and cheese and this is something we provide if asked for).
Mike starts transfers at 8:45 and normally is continuing this until at least 10am (if not later if further guests ask to be taken to the slopes).
Being a hotel, afternoon tea is served in the rooms for privacy for families (this is sipulated in the booking letter), and we only leave the cakes (of course covered) outside a room if access into the room is denied or we are not sure if guests are still present - not wanting to disturb them (if the hotel is booked fully by a group on exclusive use, then afternoon tea can be served in the dining area, otherwise this is also disturbing for other guests).
Our restaurant is not open to the general public. We design our menus to try to give a more substantial, healthy based cuisine which is very much based on a fusion of Japanese home cooking and european food - our website says that we offer "home-cooking" and we find that the majority of our guests appreciate food that is not too rich to be eaten everyday and a very different menu than the average "tour operator" menu.
We try to be as flexible as possible (given a very international clientele) and feel that if something had been said to us during your stay, we may have been able to do something about your grievances without having to find out about them 8 months later on a very controversial site such as Trip Advisor.
We have, on the whole, only positive comments fed back to us, but we do take any constructive criticism and will always try to improve.
Therefore thank you, and once again, sorry that we were not able to meet your specific expectations.
Faye & Mike

It's difficult to choose what we like most when staying at the beautiful Chalet Matsuzaka. Is it the stunning Japanese Spa area with it's indoor (Ofuro) and outdoor (Rotemburo) hot tubs which you can soak away the aches of the day's skiing? Is it the pre-dinner drinks (and after dinner!) served in front of the roaring fire place? Is it the really lovely food? Not just at dinner either - the breakfasts are delicious too, with daily variations. My personal favourite is the Japanese breakfast with miso soup, mackerel and rice, not what I'd normally have but absolutely lovely.
The list goes on, the beautifully appointed bedrooms, the secure boot room, the lovely resort of La Rosiere. How to choose? I think what we like most are the hosts themselves. Faye and Mike are the most welcoming hosts we have ever met. They really make you feel at home and are only too happy to assist with providing any information you may need or lift passes, contact details for lessons etc. Nothing seems too much trouble - even breaking through the snowdrifts in the Land Rover in the early hours to make sure you catch the taxi to the station!
My wife and I have stayed in lots of hotels in many different countries and this is the only one we have ever returned to (first stayed in 2010) and can't wait to get back there again very soon!

I can honestly stay this was the first time I have stayed at a hotel where I wanted to thank the owners for letting me stay there !

I stayed as part of a summer break travelling through the Alps - I wish I could have stayed longer. On this trip I stayed at 5 different hotels, this one was by far the best. The hotel and rooms are exceptionally clean and the the spa facility is particular well done and for me Faye's cooking was exquisite. I would go again purely for the food.

There are a lot of hotels in this area but one this is exceptional - If you get the chance I highly recommend a stay here.

Very relaxing and hospitable. Wonderful food, amazing view from the window and beautiful, clean rooms. The owners were very welcoming also.
The spa area is fantastic, and plenty of towels and soap. The outdoor pool is not overlooked at all.
Overall an amazing stay, will definitely come again!

Back in La Rosière, and just as last year, the warm attention of our hosts at Matsuzaka is quite unique. The place is squeeky clean, the food is excellent (thanks to Faye), with an Indian dinner night, and another dinner that was Japanese. Not an easy combination to achieve in the heights of the Alpes.
Congrats!
JB

We stayed at the chalet matsuzaka in possibly one of the best seasons for snow in the Savoie for the last ten years. There was so much snow we could not ski the last few metres back to the chalet because of the depth of snow around the rear entrance where a 'tunnel' had been cut through which we slid down! Of course, after a heavy days skiing there's nothing better than to relax in the Japanese spa - hot tubs - sauna etc. I've attached a photo showing how deep the snow was around the outdoor hot pool this time. Our hosts Mike and Faye could not have tried harder to make our stay pleasant. Apperitifs were served at 7.15pm to meet with other guests before dinner - very civilised. Our room had a great balcony and was roomy with plenty of storage for our ski/outdoor clothes - a point many hotels seem to forget. We last skied in La Rosiere 20 years ago. Since then there have been many new lifts installed and the route over into Italy (La Thuile) much improved. The pistes were very well kept. A very good stay and thoroughly recommended.
