“Lackluster, overpriced food.”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed September 29, 2011

We came for lunch expecting the menu that I saw online. The lunch menu is much different from the dinner menu. Not nearly as great a selection. And very overpriced for what you get. Cheese sticks on dry salad shouldn't be $11. A ver boring watery bowl of soup shouldn't be $6. For every sandwich or burger, which was $10-14 you had to pay extra for fries! And finally my pasta sauce was literally watery. Would not go back and would not recommend.

“Lovely Spot, Lousy Service!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed August 22, 2011

We have walked through the doors of the 'Grill on the Gull' twice. The first time was to get some information and we were turned off by the 'grouchy ...go away' response. About a year later, we decided to try it again...maybe it was a bad day! The food was bland and poor quality. The salmon was served with a salsa. The fish was tough and tasteless. The salsa was appreciated because it was the only food on the plate that had flavour and seemed fresh. I would have ordered a second glass of wine but the server never returned to our table after serving the food, and for the same reason we declined to have dessert.

“First rate lunch spot”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 10, 2011

Grill on the Gull seems to have lost its chef recently judging by a somewhat disgruntled review which isn't a review for its sister establishment the Dominion Hotel, in which he complains about them still using his menus. Well, whatever is going on, someone is doing something right because the food we had one Saturday lunchtime was first rate. I had a salad of baby spinach with crumbled blue cheese, strawberries, apples, cherries and blueberries with a raspberry vinaigrette accompanied by a side of sweet potato fries. Everything worked and the vinaigrette was perfectly judged. The fries were remarkably good, with a light tempura batter making them crisp rather than limp. The only slight misjudgement was the peanut dipping sauce which tasted like peanut butter added to chilli dipping sauce and was too sweet. My partner went for a 'naked burger' (no bun) on various leaves accompanied by a side of chunky fries with skins on. Again, pretty much perfect, with a burger that actually tasted of the beef, and crisp fries with a fluffy interior. Add to this the excellent outside terrace overlooking the river (presumably the Gull), a good and reasonably priced wine list and friendly service, and you've got an excellent lunch spot. It's worth mentioning that the kitchen is open and the smell of gridled meat was very evident when we passed through the dining room on the way out, so the terrace is a better option if you want to avoid cooking smells.
