we throughly enjoyed ourselves, its a superb location overlooking the atlantic ocean with the sea 40 metres away (front line) the room was spacious for my partner and our 8 year old child very very clean, always fresh fruit and flowers, surrounded by nature, great for walks and exploring.................totally unspoilt. great great place...............you feel so relaxed there. execellent choice of food and drink. wonderful, professional and thoughtful service. Very up to date with environmental issues, (energy saving, looking after nature, etc)

We stayed here as part of a Saga Canary Island Hopping tour and this was the best and most relaxing hotel of the three used even though this was supposedly 3 star and the others on Tenerife and La Palma - 4. We appreciated the quiet situation on the sea front although the slightly untidy site adjacent kept my location rating down to 4 star rather than 5. Otherwise there is little to fault in terms of rooms, staff and food in the usual buffet style restaurant. They gave us vouchers for free tea and coffee in the rooftop bar/cafe which adjoins the swimming pool. Unfortunately the latter was unheated and only hardy souls like me (used to swimming in the North Sea) ventured in. Pity really because it was a really nice pool with plenty of sunloungers etc. We would certainly go back here under our own steam, flying into the fab new airport and hiring a car for the spectacular if bendy drive down to Valle Gran Rey

Anyone looking for a small hotel which rather than add stars actually underplays its status (its 3 stars put UK 3-stars to shame) would do well to book this one. It is ideally located on the seafront and with views of beautiful overhanging cliffs. Not a football shirt in sight. and everyone is very aware of the 'quiet approach' advocated by the management. The staff are simply fantastic, no problem is too much for them to try and solve. The fact that they are the same as a few years ago speaks volumes for employee retention. Food is what you would expect of a hotel that caters for various nationalities (although mainly German) and compares favourably with other establishments. Any glitches in this respect are more than offset by the chance to have breakfast and lunch on the roof terrace with the sun warming your back/front and looking out over banana plantations and the ocean. Late at night, reading a book as you hear the waves rolling onto the bach is simply priceless. Ideal hotel for anyone travelling alone (which was not my case but I could clearly see the benefits, as there were several lone visitors). Ideal also if you are concerned about the environment, they have a very interesting eco-approach to products, rubbish etc. Give the hotel a try!

Stayed at the Gran Rey overnight in mid September. Booked a sea view but upon arrival the very efficient and helpful receptionist upgraded us to a superior room at no extra cost as we were only there for one night. Room 127 was right on the corner of the hotel, and had absolutely fantastic views of both the seafront and the mountain behind.

We ate lunch at the snack bar on the roof of the hotel, right next to the swimming pool- what a great idea to have the pool on the roof. The food was reasonably priced, and you could live on it, but it wasnt of the best quality. We chose to eat nearby in the evening and again had a reasonably priced meal though the quality was much better than that of the hotel. beware though that most places seemed to close early so dont hang around.

We came to la Gomera just to have a look around and found it to be exceptionally picturesque, though even by our mid-forties standards the Valle Grad Rey is very quiet indeed. Someone should kidnap Britney Spears and drop her here for a chill out month, she'd come back a different person!

Thoroughly recommend this hotel for its beautiful location alone.

A lovely hotel situated by the sea. For 3* accomodation it was very clean and adequate. The room was a fair size although the bathroom was a liitle small and dingy. The sea view was stunning although because of West facing the room got very hot after midday. The air conditioning was not very efficient although improved slightly after being mentioned to management and then repaired.

The staff were all very attentive, especially those in the restaurant, however, the food although plentiful was not over inspiring and the hot food was only ever tepid.

The pool was situated on the roof and was very clean and a reasonable size for a small hotel. The terrace bar served good snacks at very reasonable prices.

We visited 3 Canary islands on this holiday, the other 2 hotels beiing 4*, however, I have to say that this hotel was certainly better than one of the others!!

The hotel itself (and staff) are very pleasant but I would not recommend a half-board stay at the Hotel Gran Rey until they improve the quality of their food. Their evening buffet was like school dinners all over again. Tinned vegetables and fruit despite being surrounded by all that lovely fresh produce on a prolific island. Overcooked tasteless stodge, poor choice and little variety. Stay there but do eat out as meals in the excellent local restaurants are cheap and of excellent quality.

As for breakfasts - buffet style and little choice but you must try their fruit juices which must be homeopathic as they are thinned down so much that it's hard to tell that you're not drinking water.

La Gomera is the best area yet for some excellent walking.

  • Liked — Excellent location for hill walkers and great staff
  • Disliked — Dreadful food - evening meals are worst ever experienced anywhere.
  • Tips/Secrets — Go bed and breakfast only - not half board

Very comfortable 3* sea front hotel. Go for the superior, sea view rooms which are well furnished, spacious,a large comfortable bed and have an extensive, sunny terrace. Staff are friendly, hotel clean. Average, but good value buffet dinner. Breakfast buffet plentful but quality lacking and dull. Attractive swimming pool on roof.
Overall an excellent beach hotel which makes an excellent base for a stay on La Gomera with access to many of the walking trails.
