“Kalu's Hideaway”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 30, 2013

My family and I returned from a two and a half week holiday in Sri Lanka, where we visited many places, but Kalu's Hideaway was without doubt our favourite! Tucked away in the jungle this eco-friendly lodge hotel, offers a chance to experience some of Sri Lanka's amazing wildlife. There is a rustic charm to it that makes you want to return again and again. The children loved the freedom of the gardens, the crystal clear pool and the incredibly friendly staff. We went on two safaris and both times were blown away by the wildlife so close at hand. I highly recommend this hotel as a total escape from hectic city life. We loved it!

This is a small hotel reached by a bumpy road. It is set in pleasant gardens with a nice pool. Our bedroom to our surprise had no windows, although leading off the bedroom was a small sitting room, which did have a window. On the other hand the air conditioning was efficient. There are other rooms, which did not have this drawback,so make sure when booking that you get one of these. The diningroom was pleasant and the food good, although the menu was limited. The staff were friendly and helpful. The big plus is that the hotel is a mere 10 minutes from the Uda Walawe nature reserve,so getting up could be delayed till 5.30am for the 6am departure! On the other hand we then came back for a pleasant breakfast at 9am. Perfectly OK as an overnight stop.

Excellent location for access to Uda Walawe National park. The staff were very nice and we got to meet the famous Kalu. They helped to organise our safari, our visit to the elephant orphanage (transit home) and trip onwards to Mirissa. Beautiful grounds with lovely infinity pool. Buffet style breakfast was a bit dissapointing although the food from the menu at dinner was lovely (although the menu was only available to us when there were fewer guests to justify a buffet dinner). Unfortunately a mosquito net was not provided, luckily we had our own so would recommend taking one. Also a shame they didn't have free wifi, think it should have been included for the price.

We stayed here for one night in March 2013. On first impressions the place is amazing, but the service really lets it down. You need to ask staff for everything at least twice, quite frustrating when you are paying the amount that you are. The place is well designed and looks great but needs better direction.

We have mixed feelings about this hotel but literally have the same opinion as another review (disappointing). The accommodation was very nice, clean, spacious and lovely outlook, but the room was not cleaned for our second night.
The food at dinner was terrible and by far the worst we had in Sri Lanka. They cannot cook 'western' food and their curry was not much better. We felt we were captive, a long way from anything else and therefore not much choice re food.
I will say that they have a marvelous masseur - best massage I have had in a long time..my husband also agreed.

Room Tip: Look for a room on the 1st or 2nd floor with a view to the river.

We stayed here for one night while on a trip to Udewalala Park. Overall the stay was very enjoyable and the staff were very helpful nothing too much trouble. We only ate certain items off the menu and they very kindly only charged for these as opposed to charging the whole menu cost. Swimming pool was lovely with infinity pool overlooking the river. When I asked to use the internet again they very kindly let me use the hotels with no charge. Room was very spacious and bathroom was well equipped.

The hotel is set in pleasant grounds running down to a river, but in parts has the appearance of a work in progress. The deluxe room we had for our one night stay was large with a covered balcony and a view over the garden.
The dinner menu was very limited with a choice of three main dishes all “western” style and the food was without doubt the worst we had anywhere in Sri Lanka. The staff were willing but would benefit from some good training.
