“Magical place. Must stay while in Sri Lanka.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 2, 2013

We decided to stay in Kirinda because of its close proximity to Yala Park. On arrival we were welcomed by Dilan Fernando who along with the rest of the staff made our stay in Kirinda truly unforgettable. After travelling for 10 days around Sri Lanka, we were very surprised to discover the fresh linen and towels in our rooms, mini fridge and TV! The staff entertained and spoiled us all the time (coconut drinks every day,the chef cooking "customised" dishes just for us). The manager organised a romantic dinner for us with candles by the pool. Dilan organised all our trips (including Yala Safari) as well our taxi to our next destination for a very competitive price. Please ask how to get to the nearby virgin beach (approx 10 min walk) - stunning!
We would recommend this place to anybody who happens to be in Sri Lanka. We will definitely be back!!!!!!!!

Room Tip: We were staying in "FROG", which was a beautiful chalet. all of them are located on the be...

If you are looking for a small genuine hotel with good personal service Kiranda Beach Resort is for you! Right by the beach with beautiful settings. A nice high located pool with spectacular views of the ocean and surronding area.
The hotel is perfectly situated for safari trips to Yalla and other nature reserves.

Had an amazing stay in this beautiful resort right on the beach in Kirinda and the best thing was it wasn't swamped with tourists!
The Chalets were lovely - like small wood cabins, while not air conditioned the ceiling fan was sufficient and the room was well protected from mosquitoes.
The food was great, while they offered many European dishes, we opted for mostly the Sri Lankan choices.
But what made the holiday was the amazing staff, in particular Dillan Sanchee who friendly welcoming and smiling from the moment he met us ( and not in the "Im going to sell you something" way!! ) . He told us all about the area and the best places to go. He also organised a number of trips for us (with out slapping on the typical Sri Lanka commission) in particular The Safari was amazing.
We asked him a lot of questions about the various religions in Sri Lanka and the political upheavals. He was forthcoming and candid. He is obviously well educated and how he is not managing the place is beyond me.
Despite what an number of websites say it is safe to swim on the beach - you have to know the safe spot. Just ask Dillan he will show you and the water is lovely and warm!

Room Tip: All the rooms looked good.Any problems just ask to talk to Dillan !

Kirinda is close to a few attractions around deep down south. Kataragama temple is about 45 minutes away drive time one way. Yala National park is about 20-25 minutes away drive time one way. And the Kirinda temple on the cliff is a historically significant temple too. It is setting with boulders, makes it s simple, small beautiful temple by the sea.

The eco lodge was good. The bed was a king size bed, but strangely rather high. Probably if you have a young child who might topple over - better to ask for a cot for sure! It was value for money - with coffee and tea sachets available in the room. Room. and bathroom was clean and neat.

The food was ok. Nothing spectacular but is generaly ok. The pool was been chlorinated when we were there so we cannot comment on the state of it. We liked the eco setting overall. And it helps that drivers are looked after.

The room has a hotel information leaflet at it mentions some free amenities but the staff seems to be unaware of them (like fishing for example - we asked for a fishing rod - and staff looked perplexed!) We did not have time to cycle - but recommend trying that if you have time - to get a good southern village feel.

The hotel feels safe, comfortable, relaxing atmosphere and reasonably priced.

Room Tip: Try asking for a room nearer the beach if you like the sound of the waves! Unfortuantely I forgot t...

Let's start with the positives, the location is perfect, on the beach and very close to Yala national park. The environment was nice, and you can have a nice hike around the hotel grounds.

The swimming pool is nice designed on bip poles so that you have a view over the sea, but unfortunately the water is not very clean, and for small children it is too dangerous near the entrence, because there is no boarder near the stairs.

The restaurant was good, and they made nice breakfast for on the way if you are doing a safari.

Because it is an eco lodge, the cabins are all very open, the downside is that a lot of insects (and even a big mouse) are in the room all the time. We spend 3 nights, and because they don't clean the rooms it went worse every day.

The muskito nets are available, but make the bed very small, as a european, it was not nice to lay in the nets, but we had no option because of the insects.

While taking a shower we killed at least 10 muskito's per time...

Overall, nice location, even though you cannot swim in the sea because it is too rough, but a bit too basic for what they are selling it for.

We chose Kirinda Beach Resort for its close location to Yala National Park, and also the website looks very encouraging.
Pros:
-location
-just by the ocean
-looks really nice
-friendly staff
-good food (they are very flexible)

Cons:
-no proper running water (very poor pressure)
-we couldn't sleep there - lots of insects due to holes in the walls, no AC but very loud fans
-very small huts (we booked a hut for 2 people, while in the hut there were two beds, the second being useless and taking up lots of space)
-dogs running behing you all the time (even for a person who loves animals might become irritating)
-very rough water in the ocean

Overall, I feel like someone has a great idea for this place but did not quite manage to achieve it.

The location is ideal for a safari tour in Yala national park. The beach is very special so make sure to have time for a walk there. The place is quiet, perfect for relaxation in a natural environment.
We were warmly welcome and taken care of upon arrival. The food is good (try the seafood soup), the staff is very friendly and efficient. We hope to go back one day!
