“Experience in The barn”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 17, 2013

Me & my partner stayed for a week in self catering holiday cottage called The Barn in September last year. On our arrival, as we approached the property for the first time, we were greeted by clothes hanging on the washing line, which was not very welcoming to start our holiday off!!

Inside, both of the sofas looked tired and tatty and were ever so uncomfortable, it was impossible to relax on them! One of the steps on the wooden staircase was quite worn and each time we stepped on it felt like it might just fall apart. Then upstairs, the beams and the slanting walls in the bedroom were so low that we couldn't stop banging our heads in them every so often.

On the second day of our stay the kettle broke in the morning! I rang the contact number given by the owners immediately to let them know but there was no answer, so I left a message explaining the situation. After that we were out the whole day and returned roughly in the late afternoon back to the cottage and were hoping that the owners might have picked my message and may have even replaced the kettle in the meantime. Sadly, far from it as it appeared that Candy had just popped in at the off chance to ask if everything was okay, which she would have known only if she had listened to the message I left several hours ago!

Never mind, I explained again! Also, I took this opportunity to ask for more towels as there was only one tea towel and one hand towel supplied in the kitchen for a week's stay; which I feel was a little on the unthoughtful side! Apart from this, we were a little unsure of how to put the towel rail on in the bathroom, so thought might ask about it whilst Candy was still there, although we were explained how it all work but we found in a rather patronising way!!

With regards to the kettle situation, we were given a replacement but much to our surprise a mini travel size one!! I found it extremely ridiculous!! We had to spend all of our holiday making drinks in a tiny travel kettle, lol!! So much for staying in apparently a luxury accommodation when a reasonable brand new normal kettle couldn't have cost no more than £15.00, again very unthoughtful of the owners!!

I think one would have had to be a genius to work out the DVD player supplied in the barn as it took us about an hour to figure it out before we could watch anything on it, as quite conveniently no operating instructions were left for the guests!

Then early on during our stay, on one night the toilet broke down too, as it just wouldn't flush!! My partner spent absolutely ages in the middle of the night trying to fix it and at last he was successful and we had a working toilet again!! We so didn't expect to be doing all this and wasting our precious holiday feeling harassed by annoying things like this!!

Lastly, on our final day even after the experience we have had, we though we would return the keys in person. So, we headed towards the owner's accommodation and knocked on the door several times but no answer again!! So, we left the keys in the door of the cottage and left the place without saying bye to them.

We totally adore New Forest itself and in fact we are visiting it again in March but definitely not returning to the The Barn again and would certainly not recommend this cottage to anybody. The accommodation is too expensive for what it is and the owners are simply too cold and indifferent.

We holiday at least about three times a year and go to different places each time but have never ever come across some many negatives in one place!! What an absolute shame!!!

We recently spent a weekend at Forest Edge celebrating a special family birthday. Nothing was too much trouble for Candy from the moment we arrived until we left on the Monday morning. Both of our rooms exceeded our expectations being clean and welcoming. Breakfast can only be described as 5 star with local produce cooked and presented to a high standard. On the morning of my daughters birthday Candy presented her with a home made birthday cake complete with sparklers!! Top quality B&B - we will return.

This place gives me a boost! Breakfast is something to look forward to and I liked my room. Stayed here twice so far and will certainly return next time I visit the New Forest. Candy Newman is professional and helpful.

The Forest Edge B&B was a delightful retreat on our trip to the New Forest. Our stay was lovely and out breakfast was delicious. We can highly recommend Candy's smoked salmon and scrambled eggs that had the presentation of a 'Masterchef' finalist!!!!

The bathroom was well stocked with lovely soaps and hair conditioner with a wonderfully large shower that was perfect after our long days of riding in the forest. Candy and Dennis were very lovely and made us feel welcome and at home. Definately will be back for another perfect retreat...

Room Tip: Pink room was great...

Like a previous writer we also found ourselves temporarily homeless, and were pleased to seek refuge at Forest Edge. The owners were professional, kind and always helpful, we stayed in The Deer Hide, The Barn, The Sydney Suite and The Pink Room, all were of a good standard and thoughtfully furnished. When we were in B&B breakfasts were delightful and we were sad when we had to leave. Charlie the dog was an enthusiastic bonus, thankyou Candy & Dennis for your kindness.

We arrived in the pouring rain but were quickly welcomed by Candy who showed us around The Loft, self-catering apartment. We had everything we could have wanted to make a comfortable stay, including some nice little touches. It was so warm and cosy, and was lovely to come back to after a day out. We were particularly impressed with the size of the bathroom and the storage space which you don't often get on holiday! The leather sofa was very comfortable too so felt just like home from home. There are great views from the kitchen as it looked over the forest and garden bird feeders. We found it a great central location for visiting and went to Beaulieu and Exbury Gardens which are well worth a visit. At Milford-on-Sea and Lepe you can park the car right up to the beach and get fantastic views of the Needles and Isle of Wight. The smaller villages are also pretty and Minstead and Breamore church are particularly interesting. Lyndhurst is the main place for tourist information and we had a good lunch at the Lyndhurst Tea Rooms. We enjoyed evening meals at the Woodfalls Inn a couple of miles away and The Fighting Cocks at Godshill. Altogether, a very enjoyable stay and we hope to be back soon.

The welcome could not have been more pleasant and accommodating. We received considerate attention at all times without being intrusive. The accommodation was exactly what we could have wished for. The Sydney Suite was particularly appropriate for my 97 year old mother with a comfortable bed and armchair and properly appointed accessible en suite - it is rare to have nearly all the correct fittings in the right place. The Pink Room was more than adequate also. The gardens and the rest of the house and outbuildings were well maintained and thoughtfully designed. The food was good and breakfast was served with just the right level of friendly engagement. There was much to admire and lots of interesting touches.
