“A lite lunch”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 28, 2012

Stopped here on the last day before we were going home, but we should have stopped a lot earlier. The hotel has a fantastic spot, looking out over the loch, and bridge, and the dinning room gives you the opportunity to watch the water flow under the bridge and you tuck into your delicious food. The host was more than happy to chat, and the choice on the menu, was interesting. When we return to this beautiful part of Scotland, this is going to be one of our major stops.

We visited lochnell arms on a sunday for the carvery. There is an option to go for the carvery only or an option to include starter and dessert. The carvery itself is very good and the meats and accompaniements nice and fresh. The starters are set out on plates for you to help yourself and are not so good and were all a bit dried up. The desserts were the same unfortunately. The hotel is in a lovely location with great views over the water.

The Lochnell hotel is becoming our local - a great place for a bite to eat on the way home.
Can't vouch personally for the rooms but by all accounts clean & comfortable and with great views in some cases of the only saltwater falls in Europe - The Falls of Lora.
From the restaurant and bar you can sit and watch the water and the odd canoeist go by while dining like kings and queens. The menu is all fresh as far as we can see - with the fish pakora from the specials board a very tasty starter. I followed it up with the roast of the day - a very fine ham with all the trimmings - great veg and roast potato accompanyments. Lady C had the chicken in pasta which was delicious indeed with large pieces of fowl which she preceded with the soup of the day. retiring back to the comfy leather sofa near the wood fire with a wee dram and a coffee to finish was sublime indeed. This family run hotel is a credit to Colin and Joan and their superb friendly team.

Room Tip: Try and get one with a view of the falls - well worth it

We were disappointed with our stay. Room was pokey and needed an upgrade. For the price, it was poor value. Wifi was not available in the room and only seemed to be accessed at or near reception. Breakfast had variety but the full English was too greasy. Walls were quite thin. Window in the room didn't close properly so the room lacked security. On the plus side, they allow dogs to stay and the staff were friendly. Parking was free and readily available.

We chose this location because it was close to Oban and most of the decent B&Bs we had tried in Oban were full up. I'm glad it worked out this way, because we came across this place. It's about a 10 minute drive to the centre of Oban over a rather impressive bridge which overlooks the Falls Of Laura. You can hear the sound of the water from the falls from the veranda.

If you're willing to pay a bit extra, you get a room with a lovely view of the water and a bistro table to sit outside. £50 pp/pn was the rate we paid for two nights. One of our favourite things to do was to come back after a day of sightseeing and sit at the table with a bottle of wine and some fish & chips watching the light change on the water. Bliss.

The toiletries are high quality and the room is a reasonable size. There's a great view whilst you shower! Very cosy room with well stocked tea & coffee facilities, Freeview TV and a comfortable bed. We ate in the restaurant for one of our two nights. The food was excellent with a well stocked bar with some decent Scottish lagers and whiskies. There is no lift up to the rooms, so you will be lugging your stuff up a narrow staircase for a few flights.

Despite the room being a few floors above the pub we never had any problems with noise from below.

The included breakfast was a highlight of the stay. We had the porridge which was great, smoked salmon (loads) with scrambled eggs, smoked haddock and the full traditional Scottish breakfast was plentiful and tasted superb. Lots of cereals, yoghurt and fruit too. Very quick and attentive service.

Hotel staff were very friendly who work their socks off. The only thing to say is that a £10 deposit is taken at the time of booking but wasn't knocked off on our departure. But was sorted with a quick phone call a few days after we returned.

3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 20, 2011

Just returned after 3 nights at this hotel with husband, son and elderly aunt (who had a single room).
Positives: Staff very helpful and friendly; food very good; housekeeper every day and room kept clean and tidy with fresh towels. Bit skimpy with the loo roll though! Very nice view over the water.
Negatives: When we arrived on Friday night the weather was cold and wet. Heating in the room would not work. Asked a number of times about this but the radiators still did not work. Luckly there was an oil filled radiator in a cupboard, at least that took the cold air out the room. I had to ask for a radiator for my aunt for her room but it was there very quickly. Floor in bedroom was like walking on a boat, very uneven. Bed was quite comfortable but pillows very hard. TV in room was antiquated - just a little portable. Thought it would have been upgraded to a flat screen nowadays! No duvets on beds, spent half the night sorting the sheets and blankets. Again a need to upgrade.

Room Tip: Just returnbed
