We arrived at lunchtime and had our lunch at the restaurant. The food was better than we expected and portions generous. We were charged the wrong amount at the gate - 2 students and 2 adults instead of a family, and the staff member who was new couldn't figure out how to fix the error. I went to the visitor centre and entrance after lunch and they immediately sorted it out and apologized.
We took the guided tour of the Abbey (included in the price) and the guide was good. We were, however, stunned at the fact that only about 5 or 6 rooms are open to visit. We had to wait for the 15 minute film to cycle through to an English version. We waited but then found out it didn't work properly - the sound skipped, it stopped in places. We walked out very disappointed.
The gardens were lovely, the head gardeners house and Bothy were open. We could have spent more time there, but left it a bit too late and had to rush to get the last bus back to the main part of the site. If it had been better weather, it looked to be a nice walk. The church was brilliant, an amazing structure, although, again, only the main church is open and no other spaces available to visit. Still, well worth the walk out there, even in rain.
I'd go once, but probably wouldn't go back, so pick a nice day and spend the time to see it all.
