Just returned from a fabulous 4 day stay at the Marriott. I think those who wrote the terrible reviews probably won't be happy anywhere! How could you not have a great time here? The rooms are large, beautiful (and not faded and worn as written in a previous review) with comfy beds & down pillows. The bathroom has a jacuzzi tub & bidet. Nutragena products for shampoo, etc. The sink area is separate and open to the room which I really liked. There's a "closet" which houses the coffee maker and small refrigerator (which is empty...no mini-bar) and a couple of shelves to store things. I was very happy to see an ice bucket as most of the Caribbean resorts I've stayed at did not have ice machines. Lots of storage in the armoire that houses the TV, plenty of hangers in the closet along with 2 golf umbrellas and a safe. Our maid service was excellent, usually she made the room up by 2 or 3pm. This was just fine because we were busy all day on excursions or at the pool. Left her $2 each day along with some American chocolates. We stayed in one of the villas on the ground floor with a patio that overlooked one of the small, quieter pools. Grounds are lush, full of palm trees, huge hibiscus plants and other tropicals. Because we were part of a very large group (@ 200), most meals were served buffet style. Breakfast and lunch were at Blu and the quality of food was just outstanding, so I can imagine how good it would be to order off of the menu. Some of our group dined at Blu for dinner and they said it was to die for. The drinks at the swim up pool bar were delicious, if not a little strong! Had lots of great frozen tropical concoctions and the prices were very reasonable...about $6. We've paid alot more at resorts here in the States. Yes, the bartenders are a little slow, but they could really use 2 bartenders at the swim up bar...not their fault so just be patient. We've been to several all-inclusives in Mexico and the Dominican Republic and the drinks there weren't very good, but at the Marriott they were what you would expect at an up-scale resort with all of the top brands (Absolute, Baileys, Crown Royal, etc. Also have Bud & Miller beers) I would rather wait a few minutes to get a top-notch drink! I was surprised that there weren't that many people at the pool, so there were tons of empty chairs. A floating mat cost only $5 all day...what a deal! The beach is great...soft sand but very hot...you'll need flip flops or aquasocks. Take a walk up the beach to the left and go to the Beach Bar (not part of the hotel) ...just a cute little white hut with a couple of tables and bright yellow umbrellas. I talked to a couple of locals there...they are so friendly here. I got a rum punch which was very good and only cost $2! I would have to say that the only disappointment I had was with the gift shop...not much to choose from for souveniers. We took a catamaran ride to Nevis to do some snorkeling, saw Brimstone Hill and went to Rawlins Plantation for dinner. Experiences not to be missed! Rawlins is about 45 minutes from the hotel and Brimstone about 35 - 40 minutes. Great scenic views along the way. Not much shopping to do...go to Island Hopper on the square in Basseterre for Batik, prints, tropical pillow covers and some designer clothing (Tommy Bahama shirts for $59). Also found cute silver charms at Ram. Save some room for local flavored rum at the duty free shop in the airport. There's a few small shops so if you don't find anything in town, you might here. All in all, this was a wonderful trip and we are already planning a return trip with some friends so we can experience all this paradise has to offer.
