and find that they are at the Timothy Beach Resort in St. Kitts. No – really. My wife and I stayed at this 31 unit condo resort on Frigate Bay near the southern tip of St. Kitts recently to celebrate our wedding anniversary, and all three creatures I mentioned are prevalent on the property. There actually is a rooster, its mate, and what appears to be a son (we named them the Fowlers). They wander around the grounds all day with the rooster (Henry) crowing quite frequently. The resort sits at the bottom of Timothy Hill, named for the British general whose task it was to guard the island from the French. The hill, which is actually a rain forest, is home to many monkeys and mongeese. This is the only resort on St. Kitts that faces the Caribbean sea, so the water is calmer and warmer. This is a comfortable, friendly resort, with a staff to match. The Sunset Cafe restaurant serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner, featuring local produce and cuisine (try the jerk chicken crepe for lunch). Hats off to the restaurant staff, particularly Ashton, Juliet, Michelle, and Idetha. And while the resort is in a remote spot, it’s still only a 10-15 minute ride from the airport in BasseTerre, and is very close to the famed St. Kitts beach shacks, which have plenty of good food and entertainment (try the grilled lobster at Cathy’s (3 lbs. for $40.00), ribs at Buddies Beach Hut, and Thursday night reggae and a fireeater at Mr. X’s Shiggidy Shack. A short walk from the resort are some of the best restaurants on St. Kitts – Rock Lobster, Bombay Blues, and Ciao.
Some advice on the resort – make sure you get an ocean view room (otherwise you’ll be looking at Timothy Hill). There is also a near constant trade wind blowing (about 10-15 mph); one drawback is that there are no ice machines. The rooms are equipped with small refrigerators that do have one ice tray, but it doesn’t go too far. If you want ice, take the ice bucket from your room and head to the restaurant. (This will also give you exercise as the resort sits on the side of Timothy Hill. There is a good sized pool on the property, and the beach is very close (and no vendors to bother you).
All in all, St. Kitts is an undiscovered jewel of a resort island – 68 miles long with a total of 46,00 residents, 20,000 of whom live in BasseTerre. There’s lots to see on the island from forts to botanical gardens to lush rain forests. Food is very reasonably priced, and the liquor is, as the hostess at Rock Lobster put it, ”cheap”. So why aren’t you making your reservation right now? Maybe we’ll see you there – we are DEFINITELY going back.
