“What a fabulous find!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 29, 2011

I bought a short break at Portsonachan, at Countryside Live in Harrogate. We planned to celebrate my wife's birthday, and that of one of our friends. Four of us made the trip up to Loch Awe on the 25th of January. The location is simply AWEsome (pardon the pun!) and the welcome we got from Daniel (the manager?) was excellent. Nothing was too much trouble, with offers of packed lunches etc etc etc. Breakfast was excellent, with haggis, black pudding, bacon, egg, sausage, tomato, fried bread, toast, mushrooms, along with the usual cereals, fruit juices and fruit. Coffee and tea was plentiful and hot, and we were able to set off on our days out well satisfied - and actually not really needing to eat again until the evening! The lounge is lovely, with big leather armchairs and an open fire, and there are fascinating glass topped tables with bronze (I think) animals poking through. The view across the loch is to die for, so if you can book a Lochside room I'd certainly recommend it. All of the staff were very friendly and helpful - we're already planning a return visit in the summer!

We visited the hotel with friends for Hogmanay 2010. We stayed for two nights in lodge accomodation. The booking/package included breakfast on both mornings and a 4 course hogmanay meal.

Finding hotel: We knew the area relatively well and referred to map when nearby. It was very easy to find and the journey there was simply stunning.

Location: The hotel sits right on Loch Awe so you really could not ask for more. Proper postcard picture setting. This is a superb retreat for you if you need to re-charge your batteries as we did. We took long walks along a road for hours and rarely encountered traffic which was ideal for dog walking.

Hotel parking: Ideal, no problems.

Hotel/reception/welcome: A lovely warm reception. We could tell from the outset that this hotel stay was one for letting it all wash over us and not 'sweat the small stuff' as the staff were so helpful and ready to help out with anything at all. There were various 'wee issues' but none of them were worth getting worked up about in my opinion.

Accomodation: Our accomodation slept two adults in a double room and in the sitting/kitchenette area there was a sofa which could be made into a bed for a child. The facilities within the lodge were adequate and a tv/dvd was available with dvd's for borrowing in reception and a docker for an ipod for playing music built into the tv. The kitchenete had everyting one would need. The bedroom was compact and did the job. The lodge was serviced daily and we just had to ask for anything we needed outwith this.

Food: The gala meal we had on Hogmanay was fab and the service was excellent. The meals we had at other times were good and we were definitaley ready for them as we waited a bit; the laid back atmosphere meant we did not feel let down by this at all. We had another drink and enjoyed the time to chat with friends ;-)

Bar: The bar was good and drinks selection was up to standard. The staff were helpful, chatty and remembered our names!

Lounge: For us this was one of the best parts. We took time to sit amongst strangers at a roaring fire and just RELAX. We read books from the hotel library, played hotel boardgames, blethered over coffees (and stronger) and even had a snooze! The atmosphere in the old fashoined lounge was everything we wanted and our labarador roamed free making friends of her own!

Evening entertainment: We had a smashing hogmanay with a piper, disco and amazing fireworks laid on by the hotel. The view was breathtaking when we were outside watching them and they lasted for ages. The views across the loch watching the fireworks at all the other hotels in the distance was magical. Not a dry eye in the house! For me the disco on the night was not quite right. I would have preferred the all round entertainer who played on 1st Jan on Hogmanay. He was a real entertainer and I think with the bigger crowd on Hogmanay he'd have been fantastic. This comes down to personal preference though. We are middle to late 30's and there were younger people than us there so the disco was probably what they enjoyed most. Both evenings were fab though!

Pets welcome: The moment we arrived we were encouraged to let our dog roam free throughout the hotel and once she aclimatised she did just that. The staff were so relaxed about this and there lots of dogs which could have been disasterous but it was perfect. It just worked so well.

Staff: Daniel could not have been more helpful when making the booking via the telephone. He was very attentive before and during the stay. I had lots of questions for him and he didn't disappoint with assistance. Whilst we were there Daniel made regular checks with us to make sure we were happy which meant a lot. Our friends from Ireland were delighted with thier Hogmanay and are sure they will return.

Thank you to the family at Portsonachan for a lovey stay.

If you visit this hotel a car is a must, unless you love very long walks, as it is not close to any village or town. It is in a lovely position overlooking Loch Awe so very relaxing. We visited inbetween Christmas and new Year but were still impressed with the scenery, it must be stunning in the spring and summer. We found the hotel staff to be friendly and helpful, especially Danny who went out of his way to fulfil every request we made. There was a good choice of food although it wasn't always as hot as we would have liked. We stayed in a room in the hotel but other guests staying in the loch side apartments said that they were amazing so will probably try them if we visit again. A great place for a short break but I wouldn't recommend it for families with young children.

We stayed for 4 nights in early December and had a fantastic time, we shall certainly be returning. We stayed in a lochside duplex apartment with our 3 dogs and the acommodation was superb - spacious, clean, practical with tiled floors downstairs and very warm despite the freezing temperatures outside.
From start to finish every member of staff that we came into contact with was friendly and welcoming and nothing was too much trouble. The location is absolutely stunning and the snow on the ground made for some beautiful photos. The weather meant that for 2 days the car didn't move and we just walked around the area in the immediate vicinity of a hotel which was very pleasant. The breakfasts were delicious and huge, more than enough to keep you going until dinner. We ate in the bar every evening which suited us fine as our dogs were allowed in there with us, the menus had a good choice and the price of the food and wine was very reasonable.
The whole holiday was relaxing and we look forward to returning in a different season as I'm sure the scenery will be equally beautiful when not covered in a blanket of snow.
We really didn't want to leave and to all the staff we say a big thankyou for your hospitality and the good quality of service, every member of staff seemed happy to be there, something you don't get at all hotels.

We had no problems with the water, we were offered bottled water on arrival and every day of our stay. We did have frozen pipes one morning (it was -8 outside) and this problem was fixed immediately.

No complaints at all and we will be returning as soon as possible.

This is our second visit to this hotel, the first time we visited we stayed in the hotel this time we stayed in the coach house, both times were very nice but i have to say the coach house was exceptional, we stayed over the new year period as we did two years previous, the welcome was excellent with Daniel (the receptionist) calling in on use to see if everything was ok .
Breakfast was a fantastic choice of full scotish to smoked haddock excellent.
Evening meals were a five course affair as it was new years eve however we also ate in the bar ,which is a large conservitory overlooking loch awe, this was a good choice of menu from home made pie to steaks. On a healthier note the walks arround the loch were lovely and easy.

Had 4 wonderful days over xmas at hotel. Lovely location lots of walking although it was very cold and icy. Stayed in loch view Chatel, was perfect, lovely view. Chalet was nice and clean and warm. We were lucky to get upgraded to delux one with a lovel upstairs view and huge bath!. Breakfast at hotel was lovely haggis, salmon etc all hot and tasty. Some problems with water but drinking water always supplied. I bathed in the water and although discoloured slightly it did seems to improve my psorisis!. Room had lots of facilities, tv, cd player, cooker, dish washing and all crocker etc suppied even down to tea towel and kitchen roll!!
We had some meals in the hotle in the evening in the bar as we had dogs with us. Xmas lunch was wonderful.
We are planning on returning at least two more times in 2011. Very dog friendly although not all dog owner seems capable of poop scooping the times we were there.
My only critism would be that the staff should wear names badges. The always remember our names and which room we were staying but it took a day or so to figure out there name. Just a small point but would be helpful.
Daniel and October deal with every thing very effiently even to prob with freezing pipes etc.. Cant wait to go back

From the first welcome to the last goodbye we enjoyed every minute. Food was excellent, service good, people so very friendly and had a lovely clearn, comfortable room with plenty of space, big bath and lots of hot water.
resident bar was warm and snug, especially by the big log fire, lots of refreshments available if you wanted them, huge breakfast (I recommend the smoked haddock and poached egg- yummy) and we ate in the restaurant one night and the food was really good quality. I nearly stole the bed, as it was so comfy and snug.
Would definately recommend and would consider going again for New Year celebrations as we just loved it.
