“Tranquil Christmas break”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 9, 2014 via mobile

We recently stayed at Portsonachan for Christmas break, this was a return visit which we decide a few weeks before booking and arriving 23rd Dec 2013 for 4 nights.

We stayed in lochside apartment, which has lovely views looking over Loch Awe.
The apartment has plenty of room and would even suit self cattering persons.
The apartment has downstairs bathroom with shower, toilet, sink.
Hall way with space for boots and hanging coats, hall leads to open plan kitchen livingroom.
Kitchen has cooker, microwave, kettle, toaster, fridge, dishwasher, saucepans, mugs, glasses, plates so forth all supplied.
Livingroom 2 leather sofas, coffee table, TV, DVD player, hifi stereo, glass patio doors leading to patio with table & chairs, no to mention breathtaking views.
Upstairs is open plan bedrooms with double bed, built in wardrobes either side of the bed, with TV, large bath tub, sink and toilet. Skylight over bed.
Window facing over Loch.

The whole area is peaceful, tranquil and relaxing.
Pictures of the views dont do the place justice.
Oban is about 30 miles away and is really the nearest big town.

Loch Awe is literally to get away from hussle bussle of everyday life and just enjoy the views and take in the surrounding nature.

We eat a few times in the restaurant, which has certainly improved from when we stayed previously.
Breakfast gets thumbs up!
Xmas meal was lovely I haf lamb and my partner had traditional Turkey.

Bar & lounge has open log fires, nice warm & cosy feel after going for walks or perhaps fishing on the Loch.

Charlotte the new manager, provides warm welcome, and looks after you.
Your treated like a friend, with home from home feel. Thank you to Charlotte for making our Christmas break special.

We would return again and stay in lochside apartment as have done so previously, theres just something I find relaxing about Loch Awe.

We booked a very good deal on the recommendation of some good friends who have visited this hotel on four previous occasions. The hotel is in a stunning location down a 4 mile single lane road next to Loch Awe- there was snow on the hills and it was beautiful. Our room was very basic and cold so we were given an extra quilt and a heater which made a huge difference. The bathroom needed updating, although was very clean. The bar and the lounge both had lovely open fires and were very warm. We had some of the best seafood we have ever had on our first night- langoustines to die for, a seafood pot and gorgeous mussels. New Year's Eve was good fun and we had a great time. Breakfasts were very good with excellent smoked haddock and fabulous kippers included on the menu.
The new hotel manager, Charlotte, is doing a great job bringing the hotel up to speed although a lot still needs doing. The hotel was understaffed over the holiday and they were all doing a great job, especially Eva, but they were exhausted and service was slow at times.

We booked this hotel 18 months prior via a special offer , I must say it was money well spent and great value . The rooms are basic but very comfortable and I would say match what we paid for the stay . The rooms are breathtaking and the location is remote but very quite , which was what we wanted. The hotel service was excellent and all the staff work very hard. We did eat in the hotel every night and the food was excellent and there was a good variety to chose from , again this was match with excellent service from the team. This place is worth a visit !

We stopped in one of the self catering flats at the side of the hotel with excellent views to the far side of the loch and despite the rain the outlook made our stay, we left the car outside it never moved and was rewarded by all of the staff - we ate every day and night in the hotel and the quality and service was excellent the fact it was dog freindly made it all the better. We would eat at the table whilst D.J our jack russell settled down in front of the log fire in the lounge.
We both would like to thank David and the staff at the hotel for attending to us with such vigor!
Yes bits needed sorting but nothing was to much trouble- and there will always be some people who would moan if given the chance but not from us.
"Top tip if they have the special offer on snap it up includes a hearty breakfast and a log fired lounge to relax in after walking the dog absolute bargain"
Many thanks to Charlotte, David and the staff for making us feel so welcome.

this is my second review, i do not know what happened to the first, maybe trip advisor can tell me????
Anyway,as previous posters report, this hotel is a wee bit like fawlty towers but in a funny way. We really enjoyed ourselves here and met many other happy guests over xmas.
We got off to a poor start and we were moved twice before we got an apartment with working heating, but it was dealt with promptly.
Everything we asked for was dealt with, mostly by charlotte the emposing manageress who is a great laugh and keeps the hard working staff on there toes.
We were in the loch side apartments, with stunning views of the loch and which has a kitchen and lounge downstairs and bedroom upstairs. We cooked for ourselves on 2 nights but had a satisfying xmas lunch in the dining room. Breakfast is served in the conservatory and a great choice for breakfast, but stay away from the coffee it was rank rotten.
Drink prices are reasonable and david the restaurant manager is always asking if everything is ok.
The open fire in the lounge is fantastic, thats where we spent a lot of time drinking and chatting with fellow guests and i think jimmy the geordie (fellow guest) ran an enjoyable quiz on xmas night.
We will return here probably in the summer

Had another brilliant time at Portsonachan, been there many times before. We love the location, it's worth the journey just for that.
We upgrade to a lochside apartment, very clean and comfortable, has everything that's needed. The view from the patio area is fabulous, colours changing with the seasons. The night sky is amazing.
We had Christmas lunch in the hotel, this was excellent.
Always enjoy it here, but this time, thanks to new management and hard working staff we think it has gone up a level. Many of the not so good reviews have been noted and acted on, go try it and see for yourselves.
Thanks to Charlotte and team, and the other guests whose company we enjoyed. See you in springtime!

Room Tip: Lochside apartment well worth the upgrade.

As another reviewer said, if you're looking for a 5 stay luxury vacation this isn't it. But if you're looking for a secluded getaway with friendly, ridiculously hard working management with an amazing view this is the place! We arrived 4 hours early to check in and they quickly showed us to our cabin. It contained it's own little kitchenette with a couch that turned into a bed as well as a room upstairs. The water wasn't useable out of the tap so they provided us 1 large bottle of water. Had we known we would have brought more of our own water for the long weekend. Charlotte gave us a detailed hiking map and we went on our way (2ad 1 2yr old) hiking through the mountains to waterfalls and fly fishing hot spots and later on drove into Oban to experience a Christmas festival. This vacation is relaxing, think of a hunting cabin out in the woods. No frills, just...nice. Yes as others have said there is some updating to be done all around, but if you're going to the mountains of Scotland to be pampered than your disappointment is your own fault.
