“Exceeded Expectations”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 9, 2012

We were booked into Poblado Marinero by Travel Agents Bookableholidays.com. They also booked the flights and Airport transfer arrangements. All worked perfectly.
We were advised to request a seaview apartment when we arrived, which we did.
The lady receptionist was terse but efficient. The male receptionist we met later was much more approachable and helpful.
Room 253 was allocated (for 10 Euros extra per night) and it was perfect. The apartment consisted of a bedroom, bath/shower etc., kitchen, large lounge and good-sized balcony. It was clean, spacious and had a wonderful view over the marina and the bay.
We had 3 x changes of towels during our week.
Eating in Los Gigantes was a pleasure. There were so many good places, it was a job to fit them all in during our stay.
Favourites were; Restaurant Asturias in the church square plus the bakery alongside for morning coffee, La Bodiguita and the strangely-named Tipsy Terrace.
A sea trip on the yellow powerboat 'Ocean Explorer' to see the pilot whales was a wonderful experience.
The coastal walk to Playa de la Arena is worth making.
Based on some of the comments we've read and heard from others, our expectations were not high. What a nice surprise to find that our experiences exceeded our expectations.

Room Tip: Pay a little extra for the sea-views.

We stayed here for a week - the accommodation was poor, although probably wouldn't of been so bad for a one or two nights. The complex is very run down, and Room 144 was not suitable to stay in, it was shabby to say the least, and there is a problem with some sort of wood lice which crawl constantly between the skirting boards and other areas of wood. Several of these insects were found whil preparing food on the wooden work top between the kitchen and lounge. The bathroom also had the same problem with insects, even though it was tiled and we also had the problem of sewage coming up into the toilet - I assume from other apartments, the smell was not pleasant. This was a real shame as the location couldn't of been better - quite breath taking, although the view from the balcony was spoilt by the damaged and dirty area below our view of broken tiles and peoples rubbish that had not been cleared. The kitchen was in a poor state of repair and we didnt like to put too much in the cupboards incase the creepy crawlies got in it.
Having said allof this I couldnt fault the staff, and the lovely maid that kept us in clean towels etc.
The transfer service from the airport was horrendous and would not recommend anyone paying for the coach service - no air con, full of engine fumes and took two and half hours instead of 90 minutes for the transfer, we had to pay 50 Euros on the way back to the airport as we could not face getting back onto the coach. The Lido area across the road from Poblado Marinero was a real bonus for us and to be able to sit in the lovely clean area was a pleasure. I would recommend the first restaurant on the corner by the Mariner 'El Ancla' food was fantastic, infact most of the restaurants in the area were good, very high standard in general.

My wife and i spent two happy nights here at a huge apartment overlooking the fantastic Los Gigantes harbour. We were looking for somewhere to rent next year on a long stay basis. The whole complex is in a very poor state of repair with paved areas, woodwork, stairways, banisters and the like all needing repair/painting as they looked shabby and uncared for. This was a shame as the location is top notch. The walls between our apartment and the next door apartment were paper thin wooden partitions and we heard every movement, and i mean every movement of our noisy couple next door. Noisy sex was as if it was taking place in out room!! Overall, we had a great time. The apartment had no kettle, toaster or microwave but for a short stay was fine. A long stay for the above reasons would be out of the question.

Room Tip: Go for one overlooking the fabulous harbour but beware of paper thin walls!!

We stayed here for a week and got it really cheap, so we expected something not so good and thus were happily surprised with this hotel. The apartment was big, as well as the bathroom. Kitchen was ok and equipped enough so you can prepare meals (but there are restaurants with reasonable prices around too). Unlike previous reviewers said, there was no breakfast available. The fridge is cold enough for any kind of foods. The apartment was quite clean, somewhat time-worn but cosy, beds ok, no unwanted bugs (there was rather a strong smell of desinfection detergent). The room was cleaned three times a week and towels were changed. Our apartment was in the highest 4.th floor right above the reception, otherwise it was peaceful, but you can hear voices behind the wall (for example a crying baby, alarm clock) and as it was Christmas time, the small shopping avenue next to the hotel played Christmas carols loud from 10 am. to 7-9 pm, so afternoon siesta was not succesfull... As said, the carbage truck visits around 10-11 pm and make noise but just for a while, and the household visits around 10 am. But hey, you can continue napping at the pool area, which is wonderful! Don't forget to try the natural pool area!

Room Tip: Ask for upstairs

Ok, we didn’t expected much after reading TA reviews, but we were tempted by a nice, cozy and silent resort that is Los Gigantes and we knew that we will not be spending time in a room, so we didn’t look for a perfect spot.

Set is amazing – just above the Los Gigantes port, overlooking harbor, giant cliffs and La Gomera, with restaurants and shops on the ground floor, close to the pool area (Lido Los gigantes), where there is a free entry for hotel guests. But that’s about it.

We have booked sea view apartment for 6 nights, but get rather port view and cliffs apartment – it was on the first floor, in the niche, so you could look straight forward only and I could barely see the sea and you could hardly get some sun there (it was constantly in the shade). I asked for moving to the second floor twice, but each time I was told that everything is booked and there is no such a possibility.

Generally approach to guests is rather strange – like ‘don’t bother me’… When we arrived, the lady at the reception was talking over the phone and didn’t bother to end and check us in, we had to wait approx 10 minutes, then when I came back with passport, she was talking to some colleague of hers at the reception and didn’t mind me at all until I did an “uh huh” sound. The other day when we came to ask something during the conversation with gentleman on the reception suddenly a cleaning lady came and interrupted us without any “excuse me” and the receptionist just cut the conversation with us and started talking about something with the lady from service and after several minutes he came back to us with any ‘sorry’ word or something… I travel a lot, but I have never seen that kind of attitude of hotel staff toward guests. At least the gentleman on Thursday was the best and he acted as a real hotel staff, really helping us.

Rooms are spacious, with bedroom and living room with dining area separately, but they have definitely seen better days. Needs to be refurbished, as it simply looks old. It was clean though. Beds were two single and extremely uncomfortable (hard and covered with some kind of oilcloth underneath the linen), so we rather did not get a good sleep.

You have to pay for everything there. For TV, for internet (available only at the reception), we have seen it before when we stayed on Fuerteventura. Nevertheless, we were allowed to print out our boarding passes at the reception for free, which was a kind gesture and is worth to mention.

There was no hotel parking, but we’ve managed to find a parking place in the Marina (in late evenings it is possible, but during the day it is rather hard to find any place to park).

To sum up –we were disappointed by Poblado Marinero apartments. Los Gigantes is charming, with fine pools, nice volcanic beach under the cliffs and possibilities to go for whales and dolphins watching (we did it with ‘Ocean Explorer’ and it was amazing) and with many restaurants, shops and groceries, but mainly for guests from UK (rather hard to find real Canarian food), which are rather expensive (comparing to other parts of Tenerife like Costa del Silencio, Puerto de la Cruz, even Santa Cruz). Generally it was OK, but we would rather not be back there for longer than a day.

We have returned from the private apartment, run by www.losgigantesdirect.com , on the Marina itself where we have been before but could not wait to return. The village and the apartment was just like going home, the apartment has had some refurbishment, although it lacked nothing before, with new polished floor, decor and flat tele etc. .Comfortable well equipped and with everything required it is a delight to be in and to sit on the balcony watching everything happening around.
Various changes have been made on the harbour front and in the village .... all for the better ... restaurants to suit all tastes and pockets, which I may review elsewhere.
Transfers were recomended and made for us which made the whole trip comfortable and hassle free.
Left with some sorrow and jealous of those taking our place. ... well done to all.
