“We Will Return in the New Year”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 26, 2013

Just returned from a weeks holiday at this Hotel. We arrived at 9pm so we were just able to get a drink and have a meal.
Awoke next morning to stunning views across the sea and the island of La Gomera, rocks below with rock pools also add to the Wow factor.
On arrival we were taken to our room without going up in a lift, but on arrival at our room we found out we were on the 5th floor.
The layout of the hotel is architecturally very good, floors ground to 5th are built up the cliff, with the 4 swimming pools at intermediate roof level, the structure then continues for 5 levels above the pool area.
LOCATION
Brilliant location and stunning views, sun sets can be sensaitional.
ROOMS
Beds very comfortable, furniture a bit dated, but did have wide screen TV.
Bathrooms a bit small, and taps are furred up due to hard water. Bath tap would run at the same time as the shower as diverter furred up, this was changed the next day, but lasted 3 days then furred up again, so left it wasting water filling up the bath at the same time as having a shower.
Air conditioning is a bit slow but after a while room temperature is ok
FOOD
Overall not bad, a lot of the meat was tender, unlike the last hotel where all the meat was tough did like the waiter service for drinks, and bottles of wine as apposed to serving yourself from taps.
DRINKS
As we went all inclusive the drinks are all local makes, and are all low on alcohol.
The pool bar is the best, with stunning views across the sea. Service sometimes was a little slow but perhaps this was down to the fact we do not tip
POOL AREAS
People still get down to the sunbeds and put there towels out early, dispite notices that towels will be removed after half an hour.

Room Tip: Best rooms are on 5th floor looking west

On arriving at the hotel on 15/10/13 we were allocated room 259 on the second floor. We became aware or a rustling sound like leaves above the bathroom ceiling and noticed creatures in the ceiling light. This was reported to the hotel reception and the following day a man arrived with a can of insect spray who removed the lamp lens cover to use the spray. As there was no improvement we again reported this to the reception and were allocated room 324 on the floor above. We also reported this to the Thomson rep who spoke to the reception on our behalf.

Room Tip: Try to get a room on floor 4 or 5

We stayed here on half board basis, but upgraded to all inclusive after a fee days as we decided to stay put. We asked to change rooms as we were on ground floor to start with and wanted to see the sea which we could not do.

Soon moved up to second floor which was fine, I don't think the hotel was full which suited us so we always got Sunbeds after breakfast.

We found the extras such as wifi very slow. In fact 3G on my phone was faster than the wifi and expensive at 7 euro a day. Safe key was just a rip off at 3 euros a day. Beer and coke was 6 euros hence upgrade to AI For 21 euros each.

Food was very good. Different meats most days. Tons of fruit. Coffee was vile and often Luke warm so gave up in the end. Lots of different breads and salads. Lots of fish. Only the puddings were the same each day.

There was not much to do outside hotel. We avoiding hotel entertainment and checked local bars. Route 66 was busy each night with live bands. The AI really kills the local towns which is a shame. The bars and restaurants were very very quiet

All in all a very relaxing holiday and a very good hotel. I won't return as I prefer trying different places each holiday

Room Tip: Get sea facing room

after having spent two weeks at this hotel. I was most disappointed with the food everyday was the same. Including the breakfast. Main meal was veal goulash one day then the next day it was veal stew
you also have to buy your water with your meal when on half board. We heard they had theme nights in the restaurant. We were there two weeks and never saw one

Room Tip: take your own kettle and iron. as they are none in the hotel.

2 of 5 stars Reviewed October 21, 2013

Just returned from a week at the Barcelo Santiago, staying on an all inclusive basis.
On arrival, my wife and I were unceremoniously dumped outside the hotel at the bottom of the drive, which is a steep incline with a barrier to deal with. Easy for the able bodied, but awful for my wife in her wheelchair, and myself who also had the luggage to deal with. Help ?. Not a jot !.
We were greeted with a glass of fizz.
The reception staff were superb throughout the whole week. A special mention to Nancy, and the young gentleman with the spectacles who's name I have forgotten. Both went above the call of duty to help us out !.
The rooms were comfortable, but nothing special at all when you consider the 4 star rating of the hotel. My wife was extremely disappointed ith the room in general. No mirror over the dressing table, and no light if there had been !.
There wasn't a bin in the bedroom. One in the bathroom, but I feel there should have been one in the bedroom.
The view from our balcony was second to none, and the electric awning was a great touch in the afternoon sun.
The pool area was immaculately clean, and the pools were extremely welcome given the heat. But. Walking round the pools was a hazardous excercise as the stone tiles were EXTREMELY slippery when wet !!.
The food in the buffet restaurant was of decent quality, but we found it extremely repetitive. I mean. How many different ways of cooking Veal can there be ?.
Breakfast was as normal when abroad. Adequate, but it's the first time I've had black pudding with peanuts in.
The vast majority of the waiting staff were a credit to the hotel. A couple could have done with some "happy powders", but otherwise, they were great.
The entertainment team seemed to do a great job of keeping folks, er, entertained. The bars were good, but access with the wheelchair was limited. The pool bar was the best all round with great access, and superb staff !.
We went with Thomson, who, I feel let us down on this particular occasion, by not telling us how hard it was going to be to negotiate the area around the hotel with the wheelchair.
We didn't see the rep' at all throughout the holiday until the last day when I glimpsed her accross the reception area.
You will also find that the hairdresser in the hotel is not the most 'personable' you will find, and 20 Euros for a wash and blow dry was ridiculously expensive !!!.
The drinks appeared to be a little, how shall we say, light, in the alcohol department, and I feel we were treated as second class citizens with us being on all inclusive.

We stayed in room 514 with a brilliant sea view maid service first class, nice and peaceful at all times.bed was very comfortable with all those pillows, the iPod Dock was a good addition.
Food at all sittings is brilliant and the staff are all friendly breakfast bacon being my favourite cooked nice and crisp while you wait also fresh cooked eggs.
Ai drinks very good the only hotel I've stayed ai where the waiters are always coming round asking if you want more beers.
All in all you will have no problems if you stay at this hotel the whole holiday was a very relaxed and enjoyable experience,
We will be back next October two weeks this time

Room Tip: Rooms 502 to 524 are the best rooms

This is the second time we have been to the Barcelo and it was just as good as the first! Arrived in September, and was 85 degrees. The room was over looking the sea, magnificent views, the room was clean, fresh towels everyday, a very large bed in which I lost my husband. Food was excellent, to much choice! Entertainment was very good always something going on, never boring. Staff were very helpful, cater to your every need. There is also plenty of trips, worth every penny. I would recommend this hotel to anybody staying in Puerto Santiago. Will be returning sometime soon!!
