“Lovely hotel, but the only hotel I have ever been to that won't let you use an iron”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 26, 2012

This is a lovely hotel, it is worth paying for a sea view room and get as high as you can, but they won't provide an iron, insisting that your clean but crumpled clothes be laundered at €4.50 per shirt.... We just bought one for $14.50 at the local supermarket, but it seems petty in an otherwise very nice place. The superior rooms get smaller after the 7th floor, but are still adequate, and the views are superb, with a good balcony.

I came to Puerto Santiago to this very hotel 21 years ago, and it is as if I have never been here, everything has changed so much, but I guess that is progress.

Recommend this hotel for a refreshing winter break, but I think it would be a nightmare during the school holidays. That said, it is nice for a change to be one of the youngest people in the room...

We have only paid half board so we can try other restaurants in the area, but if we want to use the buffet, it is only €16 which is tremendous value, and the wine list is not expensive but decent also.

Room Tip: Book high if you want a good view, and pay for the sea view, it is worth every penny.

a nice touch our room was of a good standard, there was always plenty of choice
at meal times.Have booked once again for June2013 can not understand the negative

Having spent 10 days all inclusive this hotel has an enviable position on the cliffs with superb views, The waiting staff and maids do a wonderful job. Pity I can't say the rooms live up to 4 star. When we arrived the guy on the desk said our room was storm damaged and was in the middle of being painted and would be another two days. We were put in room 637 facing the back of the hotel. The room was ok but the noise from the Route 66 bar went on until midnight. Two days later we asked about our move and was told that it was being cleaned as the previous people had just left! We ended up in 354 on the side of the building which had a sea view but facing north so no sun on the balcony. The room smelt damp and had a terrible smell from the hand basin. The roof had obviously been water damaged and was fairly black and the paint was peeling. We had to stay put as the hotel was full. Looking at other folks reviews about the rooms it seems management don't seem to care. Some parts of the corridors are in a state with crumbling skirtings and such like. The restaurant is very well staffed although the food is a bit of a mish mash and often lukewarm. The pool area is fantastic, well laid out with superb views, Don't expect much contact with the animation team...we never even had a good morning in the time were there. We would possibly return but I don't know how we would get a decent room. Barcelo should really look at the shabby rooms and do something about them!

Room Tip: Sorry its the luck of the draw!

The hotel is positioned in a lovely surroundings overlooking the Los Gigantes cliffs, almost an hours drive from Tenerife South Airport, but well worth the trip. The minute we walked in we were greeted by smiling and welcoming staff. The room was very nice, modern looking and clean. Views from balcony were breathtaking: on one side there were amazing cliffs, and straight ahead we could see the tip of volcano Teide.
The pool area was very nice and clean, with jacuzzi, infinity pools and plenty of sunbeds in and out of shade of palm trees. The pool entertainment was fun, with many people joining the activities. There was also a cozy pool bar with refreshing cocktails. The hotel also offers a spa Uspa with excellent massages for all budgets. It seemed to be very popular, as it was fully booked for a few days ahead. My partner enjoyed a relaxing 20 min massage in a quiet area on the greens near pool area.
The restaurant was beautiful, with an excellent service. The waiters were quick and professional. The breakfast and dinner buffets were plentiful, with many choices of fish, meats and something for every taste. We really enjoyed food there, as it was good quality and freshly prepared.
Overall we enjoyed this hotel and its services very much. We would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a relaxing stay in beautiful surroundings, in a friendly and professionally run hotel. It would make a perfect honeymoon retreat!

We have just returned from Tenerife after doing 11 nights booked through Thompsons. Rep Karen was very good. On arrival you get a glass of champaigne. We were in room 439 - room was a bit tired looking, but large and very lovely sea view, and side view of beach bars, and fantastic sunsets on the evening. It is best to e-mail your requirements before you go and even change room on arrival if you are not happy. And ask for extra pillows on arrival - only get one each. What a lovely area, fairly quiet place, but the Route 66 bar outside hotel front is fantastic and lively for the evening, and finishes at midnight. The pool bar in the hotel is really large and again open until late. The staff were fantastic, not enough staff on reception but plenty of staff in the other areas. We were half board, and I found food good, but my husband found the food only warm, so he needed to heat it up in the microwave. But there was plenty of choice. There was a sickness bug going on, but managed to avoid it, there were lots of hand gels around the hotel. But later found out the whole resort was affected! I went with my husband and met friends there so not sure if there would be enough to keep a family with children occupied. The only down side of is that as you walk around the resort there is an occasional sewerage whiff. Go to the fisher mans inn, by Puerto de Santiago beach - on the walk to Playa le Arena, lovely sangria! And walk in the opposite direction to Los Gigantes. Lots of nice bars, especially on the harbour where you have Carlos at the Friendly Dolphin - very comical chap, and they also serve Speckled Hen on draft there if your a real ale drinker! If I go back to Tenerife I would deffo go back to the Barcelo or stay in Los Gigantes(a little bit more going on there). Altogether a brilliant relaxing holiday

Room Tip: Room 439 is large has a lovely sea view and when you look to the side 2 sea front bars, but very qui...

We had a great stay at Barcelo Santiago. That said, there are a number of point to note!
The views are amazing, and it it ill-concieved to pay less at the hotel and not enjoy the sea view - it should be the main reason for staying at the hotel.
Food - I am so glad we did not go all inclusive. The breakfast is great, and includes anything you could possible want. On the contrary the menu for dinner is, frankly, bizarre. Imagine someone turned off the lights in the kitchen and asked the chef the prepare the meal...that's it. We ate out for about half of our stay (in Los Gigantes) and were really glad that we did!
There is evening entertainment every night - we tired of it pretty quickly. There are also children around most nights (fine for families but irritating if that is what you are escaping)!

Room Tip: Sea views!

We are a married couple in our early sixties and arrived at the hotel for a 14 day holiday early on Saturday morning because of 8 hour flight delay. The hotel reception was efficient and quick with room allocation. A cold buffet was provided in the restaurant for such events.

The hotel is in two parts with 5 floors below pool terrace and restaurant and 4 floors in main building above pool.

We had booked a sea view and requested a high room by email but were given a room with sea view but on level 2 which we considered unsuitable and Sat am after breaky went to ask for an alternative room.

They agreed to this and would advise later but of course this never happened so we returned on Sun morning when they offered a room on level 3 which they said was the only room available because hotel was full. When we noticed further down the list of other room change requests we asked why could we not have one of them the receptionist said this had been requested earlier by a returning customer. I stated this was impossible as it was further down the list and how was I to know as a first time visitor room layouts and anyway wasn't we and our money as good or important.
Another room on level 4(434) was amazingly found which we found suitable with great views to cliffs, sea and Los Gigantes.

The rooms were ok and of an average standard but could do with some updating. Generally the hotel is an average 4*.

Hotel is located in a great location for sea and cliff views from pool areas.

Rooms and public areas were kept clean at all times with towels changed daily if required.

Pool towels are available for a 10 euro per towel returnable deposit although it cost 2 euros for clean ones. Pools were not heated and very cold.

The number of staff and service was excellent. We were A.I. and there was never any problem obtaining drinks and finding a table at meal times.

Entertainment team were as normal poor and unless you become involved in their daily games totally ignored everyone else and would not even say good morning etc. Evening shows were of average quality and watchable unlike the entertainment team acts.

Any entertainment games, except bingo was aimed at young people which was stupid because the average age was probably 60 years old.

Location of the hotel is not ideal for beach access and is very hilly so beware if you visit the hotel and have mobility problems.

Food was OK with normal good selection for main meal although deserts were always poor with cakes, jelly and ice cream. Same as other 4* star hotels in other resorts.

Free WiFi access is only available in reception area for 1/2 hour each day/per person then you have to pay at a cost depending on your requirement although WiFi is then usable throughout hotel. We paid for 3 hours which cost 3 euros.

It was obvious that many of the guests return every year and we would recommend hotel but we always choose other hotels or locations and would probaly not return.

Room Tip: Request rooms with sea, cliffs and town views or pool and sea views if preferred on higher floors.
