My husband and I spent 10 days in one of the five thatched-roof round cottages at Crater Bay. Since it was during the Christmas and New Year’s holidays it was quite busy. Our accommodation was a double bed en-suite, the room small but adequate and included hot shower and electricity. Aside from 3 shelves, a couple of hooks with a few hangers and a small end table, there was no other storage. Restaurant on the premises with good food but a limited menu. As is common in Uganda, service can be very slow. Lunch and dinner can take from 1 – 2 hours, so order well in advance. Food is made with fresh ingredients.
The manager and staff were outstanding – slow serving meals and drinks – but their sincere friendliness, anxiousness to please, and their obvious desire that we enjoy our visit made up for long waits for food and drink service.
Accommodation rates: (Dec 2007) Cottage – 60,000Ush/night. There are also rooms (dreary!), tents with beds, or you can pitch your own tent. We recommend asking for Cottage 1 as its location is the quietest and has the biggest garden.
The location is spectacular. The elevation is approximately 8,000 feet so the temperatures are pleasant during the day and chilly in the evening and early morning. It overlooks Lake Bunyonyi and is across the bay from Bunyonyi Overland Resort which gets very busy and can be quite noisy. The noise is generally muted so didn’t bother us very often.
The landscape and various levels of decks with tables and chairs is appealing. There is also a dock for sunning and one for dugout canoes which can be rented for 5,000Ush for the entire day or 20,000 for a day-long guided trip.
We enjoyed our visit and will definitely stay there again.
