Veronique and Pierre, the new owners of Bazouk du Saloum (since last September) have developed this little haven of peace and tranquility into something really special. The jetty off the beach is the perfect spot for sundowners over the mangroves along with a twinkle of a solar-lit lantern. Justin, the restaurant waiter is always ready for an off-the-cuff conversation and can tell you stories about the history of Mar Lodj and its villages. The food is excellent and innovative - ask whether the ginger sweet potatoes will be on the menu! A group of women make and sell a variety of extraordinary jams (baobab, cashew apple, hibiscus, sweet potato). There are two bikes you can use (no extra charge) to visit the island and a variety of tours that include everything from shell islands to beach barbeques. They organised transport for us from Dakar - prompt, clean car.
If you've heard bad things about this place, it likely comes from the previous owners. Go on, give it another try!
