“Delicious food with excellent service”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 15, 2012

We have lived in the local area for just over a year now, and our first 'night out' recently as a couple was to this lovely little restaurant. My husband is very 'picky' with food, but loves anything italian so il vesuvio seemed the obvious choice for us.

There is nothing more satisfying than finding a wonderful little restaurant that serves delicious food, has amazing customer service and a great overall ambience, and this restaurant ticked all of those boxes for us.

There was an initial problem with my meal, but the way in which this was handled was nothing short of amazing, and alot of high-end restaurants could learn a thing or two from the staff here. Unfortunately, my meal had to be returned to the kitchen, but a complimentary glass of wine swiftly arrived at our table and within a minute or two a replacement meal with a complimentary side order was also served. We were able to carry on our evening as if the whole thing hadnt happened, and this impressed me no end.

We went for the three courses, and every one was superb. The food here nothing short of delicious, and the deserts are to die for. Children are welcome, even during the evening time, and this is another amazing positive for us. In regards to cost, I would say that they are middle-of-the-road, but you get so much more than what you pay for. I have been absolutely raving about the food and customer service here ever since our visit, and we will most definately be returning to this little italian gem by the welsh coast.

“Authentic Italian cuisine”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 29, 2012

Small, family style restuarant. Good, no-fuss italian food. A great surprise to find such a good restaurant in such a small town. Highly recommended

“Very Italian”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 26, 2012

A lovely restauant locatedin the local shopping precinct. The staff are very friendly and attentive and the food is excellent. The munu is quite large and varies from meats, fish to typical Italian pastas and pizzas. Try the lunch time menu this is excellent value.

“Friendly, value for money restaurant”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 7, 2012

There was a time when every town in South Wales had an Italian cafe as families like Rossi, Servini, Berni settled in the area from the 1890s onwards. Their establishments became bywords for good food, snacks and drinks at reasonable prices and served in a relaxed atmosphere. It's a tradition that continues today in the Il Vesuvio restaurant in Llantwit Major.
Once inside the door, the warmth of the welcome hits you. And then you notice that the staff are actually Italian speaking (the real stuff not the few cod phrases you often get in less authentic restaurants).
The food is a good mixture of the traditional pastas like cabonara, bolognaise, al pesto but there are some unusual variations. Fusilli that comes with pieces of steak for example. If pasta isn't your thing, there are multiple pizzas on offer plus a good selection of fish and meat dishes served with vegetables.
But here's what makes Il Vesuvio just that bit more special is the way the staff respond if you ask them for a variation. In other establishments, even ones that are more upmarket than this, they'll say yes when you make a special request but it's a grudging yes. They would really rather not have to bother the kitchen with this. But at Il Vesuvio, ask if they can change a basic neopolitan sauce to something a little more interesting for a vegetarian and the response is 'definately, what would you like?' It's this level of hospitality and flexibility that has me going back repeatedly.
It's not a fine dining experience. But equally it's not a cafe - it is a good neighbourhood style restaurant. If only there were more like them around.
