“Acclimatisation package”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 13, 2013

Spent 1 week ar Papa Gayo as a base for the climbing peaks in the valley of the volcanoes (booked though Gulliver tours). Great base for walking or climbing since it is at elevation 3000m and the Illinizas, Cotopaxi, Ruminhui and other peaks are all within 1 hours drive. Staff super friendly and helpfull. They have four dogs that will follow you as you walk around the hosteria as well as a cow for fresh milk LLamas and other animals.
Hot water a little variable however I cant think of other places where you can acclimatise in comfort

Room Tip: Sucre is in the main building with a real wood burner

I booked a last minute deal through Gullivers Travel (see separate review) that included 4 nights at PapaGayo's.

The Good:
- I got a great room (Corona, top floor, comfortable bed, and an electric heater)
- The wait staff needed to warm up to you a bit but they were fun after you got to know them a bit (one spoke great English).
- The food for dinner was reasonably priced and pretty good
- The free breakfast and provided lunches for the excursions were all good as well.
- It was very convenient for the Gullivers day excursions. You got picked up last and dropped off first for all the day trips which was nice.

The Bad:
- Really wanted the hot tub after a few hard days of hiking but they just couldn't seem to get it up to temperature so was never able to use it.
- The location is pretty much in the middle of no where so unless you have a car, you're going to eat there at night and not have a lot to do in the evenings (which in some ways is nice).
- Wifi was spotty, it would work intermittently at best.

I met a few people who only had a fireplace in their place. Starting a fire without the right kindling can be a bit complicated apparently :) If you get one of these rooms then it seems best to just ask the staff to start the fire for you.

Room Tip: Get the Corona on the top floor! Nice big room with a TV, large bed, and an electric heater.

I stayed for 7 days as part of a four-peak climbing package through Gulliver Expeditions. I experienced 3 rooms over the week. The first room was in its own little building. It was cute and comfortable except the only source of heat was a fireplace, and no one offered to help until I complained. The second room was in the main building and was fine. The third was a room outside the main building that Louis kindly let me use to shower after returning from Cotopaxi. On a whole, the rooms were comfortable and well sized.

The food in the restaurant was okay. Breakfast was probably the most consistent. There were a lot of options, but I got very tired of being served french fries and would have appreciated more cooked vegetable options. There were salads on the menu but it felt risky. The boxed lunches were not satisfying.

On a whole, PapaGayo is a good place to stay if you're climbing Cotopaxi and other mountains in the area.

The food is incredibly delicious and incredibly well priced and the staff is amazing, friendly, helpful, multilingual. The beds are okay, very warm but very firm. Not many pillows. The hot water sort of works, and while you should keep an open mind because of how remote it is, it is a little irritating to be scalding hot one moment and ice cold the next. Our room was very basic -- two beds and a wardrobe. It was nice for a day but Im not sure I wouldve stayed longer.

Room Tip: We stayed in Duqueza, and it was an okay room at best. Wish we had stayed in another.

We only stayed two nights, but it was very relaxing..and very busy..at the same time! Our room was not the best in the house, but just adequate(the floor boards did squeak quite a bit). The view of the garden was lovely and the room was very quiet! Enjoyed the free drink bar..coffee,tea, water just a few steps away..dinner was fine..good service and professionally done! Great cook and waiter,Gonzalo Silva. He really was the star of the show..the go-to man for everything His English is very good, having been an English teacher in a former life..now, he spends 24 hours (literally!) helping guests, with check-in, tours to Cotopaxi..he was our private guide for the WHOLE day..arranging the "llama experience" (see photos),taking my wife to the doctor, serving dinner, taking us to the airport..just a TERRIFIC guy..I would go back to PapaGayo just to see him again! The rest of the staff were all very friendly, but only the girl from Germany really spoke English, but they all go out of their way to help you experience the whole thing! Highly RECOMMENDED! This is the REAL Ecuador! GO and ENJOY!. Say HI to Gonzalo for me!

Room Tip: Ask to see several rooms before deciding..if they have vacancies, of course!

Papagayo - just one word: wonderful!
I loved it there and I would always go back, that s the truth! Although sometimes it seems to be a little mini-chaos, the people are so nice and friendly and the place is just beautiful. Although I thought in the beginning I was gonna be bored, because I usually like the city with all its noise, it was just relaxing being there, being with the nature, having good food or reading a book on the patio, the sun shining on your face...
I just went there to relax some days but if you do a climbing tour it will also be perfect to stay there the night before and after your climb because it is situated so close to all the volcanoes.
All in all, thank you very much for the pleasant stay there! You are good people!

Room Tip: The suite Corona on top of that house has a beautiful view and in the morning you can see colorful s...

Love it!
Is highly recommended for its location close to some of the most beautiful volcanoes in Ecuador!
Also people there were kind with me, there are nice animals in the farm and food at the restaurant was delicious!
