“Don't Miss Dinner”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 10, 2013

This hotel offers large, clean, comfortable rooms but its location could be an issue to some. It's about a 20 minute ride to St. Malo and sits next to a high speed rail line. For us, we were okay since we were there primarily to visit Mt St Michel and St. Malo over a 2 day period. We were aware of the reputation of the restaurant but were hugely disappointed in the service. After being neglected for an hour, our waiter finally explained that they were several people short that evening and apologized, and then he kept pouring free wine for the entire meal. The food was really outstanding and would be worth a visit if you're in the area. Just a few issue prevent this hotel from being rated outstanding.

Dear Sir,
We would like to thank you for taking time to comment regarding your stay at our House.
we are sorry to read that service was not up to the standards it should have been, please accept our most sincere apologies. Since you came, we recruited a new Chef, Mr Olivier Valade, whom you may find on some other medias has a wonderful resume. He has now settled well and has brought creativity and his talent.
We wish you well, and wish you the Best Season's Greetings.
Mr and Mrs Duval.

Booked direct for a Friday night stay prior to St Malo ferry back to Portsmouth. Our room (number 88) we knew would be on the second floor, but surprised to find there was no lift but up two steep flights of stairs, so would be no good for the physically less able. The room itself was perfectly acceptable and what might be expected for one of the cheaper (89 euros room only) rooms in a 4 star hotel.
We asked for directions to the swimming pool (which had not been given on checking in) and fortunately asked whether towels were supplied there - since they were not but had to be requested from reception. We asked whether coins were needed for the lockers and were assured not as the lockers had keys. However there were no keys on the ladies lockers so no security for my wife's belongings, and only three lockers with keys in the gents changing rooms (there was no one else there when we arrived at the pool). After using the changing room WC, I was dismayed to find there was no soap or dispenser at the wash basin so normal hygiene was not possible. It was the same in the ladies changing room, and we consider this is totally unacceptable in a 4 star hotel, and risks the spread of infection.
The next problem that occurred to us was that there was no fire escape for the 3 bedrooms clustered at the top of the second floor staircase, and if there had been a fire on the small landing outside our room we would have had no means of escape. Whilst this may be acceptable in France, we are sure it would not be allowed in the UK.
On checking out, the receptionist seemed put out that we had not had breakfast (at 13 euros p.p.) as we had a ferry to catch and did not enquire whether we had enjoyed our stay or whether everything had been satisfactory, so I did not raise our concerns with her.
We think this hotel survives on the reputation of its restaurant, and keeping its hotel guests happy is given low priority. A great pity.

Room Tip: Don't book a second floor room if fire risks concern you.

Dear Sir,
many thanks for taking time to leave such a long comment,
we will go thru each of your remarks as those are used to better ourselves.
- we have rooms for special needs on the ground floor... that we keep for those needing it... same house as you stayed in thank you for being concerned for them
- directions should have been given to you to access the swimming pool , please accept our apologies.... very often you will find French people being shy about talking in English....
- lockers problems, new sets of keys have been ordered, children play with those and tend to keep them as memorabilias
- soap in the locker's room dispenser is not being filled up on purpose as lately it has been used to be put into the jacuzzi, you can imagine the result I am sure
- you are taking about the risk of infection, we tend to call a Doctor for those not feeling well,
- and it is in our habits in France, to shower in our bedrooms, before we jumped into the pool,, since you mentioned this, we now announce to anyone going to the pool that soap can be given to you as there is none there on purpose....
- regarding the fire escape, all of the house is built with fire retardant materials, fire doors shut everywhere if the alarm goes off, our systems are checked yearly, we comply with French Fire Regulation, France is a laid back country, however we too have always put security forward... even if you seem to think differently...
looking forward to reading from you
Madame Duval
please excuse our English maybe not perfect as you wished....

I have stayed at the Maison Tirel Guerin now twice and what a difference a couple of years make. The last time I stayed we were looked after very well indeed, we eat in their fabulous restaurant – almost to bursting point! We arrived this year to a reception desk of disinterested people. We booked in and said that we would like to have dinner there as we did the last time. We were told that there was no room, which was surprising as they were using both dining rooms. There was no ‘…let’s try and fit you in’ or anything. Our room was comfortable but not generous and all the amenities worked. We went out to dinner to an excellent little restaurant in Saint-Suliac, which I recommend; helpful, friendly and nothing was too much trouble! What a difference. After dinner we returned to the hotel and decided to have a night cap. We were attended almost immediately and our drinks arrived thereafter. A little time later a Frenchman/Belgian arrived wanting a glass of Calvados. He told the waiter who went off to the bar poured the drink and placed it on the bar and disappeared. The lone patron was then joined by some friends who also wanted a drink and they waited and waited for someone to come and serve them. No one came so after 15 or so minutes one of their party got up and went to the bar – no bar staff in sight. After some calling, someone eventually appeared and went over to the party and asked what they wanted to drink. They said that the ‘lone patron’ had order a drink some 20 minutes ago but nothing had arrived. It was then all sorted out, but it the service or lack of it was not good for a so called 4 star hotel. I later found out the hotel had changed hands from a family run enterprise to that of part of a chain. I for one will not be returning.

Dear Sir,
so many thank you for being so talkative about us. We are sad to see that your last stay was disappointing, however, it is in our policy in our Hotel that when a customer is disappointed and lets us know about it in an old fashion "eye-to"eye" way, we always give them the most consideration. but it is still nice to read from you, I shall go point by point through your expertfull comments.
First, please do accept our apologies for our rather inaccurate English, but I am sure it will meet your tolerance...
Second, when a room booking is being placed, we always ask whether a table is to be booked for dinner or not, if none was left for you, it is probably due to it not being required during your call, maybe we should have been more insistant on our demand. Two restaurants rooms were indeed used that particular night, but fully.... full! trying to oustretch our capacity might have ended up in diluting the service and making everybody unsatisfied, surely this will make sense to you.
I am sorry to read you found our staff uninterested, maybe they did not know you, some of the staff you have known for years have finally retired, and new staff take time to fit in.
I am glad to see your drinks were served to you at the Bar rather efficiently,
sadly that night we had not bartender, as you noticed and we would like to thank you for being supportive to our Belgian-French customer.
You may seem to know more about us about who owns the Hotel, you wrote it is a chain, it is not, would a copy of the deeds be sufficient to show you it is owned privately?
Most Sincerely Yours,
Pascal and Chantal Duval, Owners.

Initial impression was disappointing, as the room was not quite what we thought. We'd booked a junior suite, which seemed to have a separate sitting room from the hotel photos and a 'garden view' access to a swimming pool. Not so - the sitting area is just part of the bedroom, the outside balcony is a scruffy patio (Chalet view), and the pool is down the corridor. But once settled in, the room is comfortable, with traditional decor.

But things got better - dinner excellent, maybe a bit rich, so some discretion required. Lobster ravioli mmmmh but beware the chocolate desserts! Restaurant nice decor and service excellent. Breakfast pretty reasonable, usual selection of breads, cold meats etc not bad value.

Staff generally very helpful and english spoken if struggling with french. Bed comfortable - not always the case in France- and air con works perfectly. Small bar/fridge, but no tea coffee making facilities. Bathroom has shower and bathroom, shower rain forest type, ok but sprays everywhere. Swimming pool full of hyperactive unsupervised children at all times of the day, so not worth bothering with unless you enjoy being jumped on.

Hotel is conveniently situated for ferry from st malo, tourist spots cancale, dinan and mont st michel. In st meloir, there is a glass blowers worth visiting, but not a lot else. Hotel some way out of the village, right next to the station and a main road. Neither caused any problem, good insulation and no real disturbance. Plenty of parking.

This is a perfect stop for a tour in this area of France, but not a destination in itself.

We spent two nights here following a week in Southern Brittany. As a couple, our experience was good, However, my son, daughter-in-law and three very young children were with us and they found the hotel somewhat unsuitable for children. They had a family suite, which involved the use of a bed settee and when in bed mode, it left very little space.
The restaurant was fine dining and even though a child menu was available, the timings were too late for small children, used to eating earlier. We ate in the restaurant the first evening and the food was excellent, with set menus ranging from approx. €40 up to €90 plus, so be prepared! During our visit to the restaurant, many French children were eating there with their parents. All was fine and very civilised apart from a small number of babies and toddlers, who cried relentlessly until removed by a parent and returned when they were calm enough to continue their meals. My son and his wife decided not to risk the crisp white linen and beautiful glassware even though our grandchildren are well behaved. They certainly wouldn't stay at this hotel again with young children, whilst we may do as a couple on our own.

Room Tip: The front of the hotel would be noisy due to the proximity of the railway station.

We stayed here on a last minute booking after a very trying day - but this hotel made us feel as though our luck had changed! The staff couldn't have been more welcoming and the room was lovely. The biggest boon, though, was the fantastic swimming pool with jacuzzi and sauna. We stayed in a family room which was perfect for us. I would definitely stay there again for longer!

This is our fourth visit to this hotel where we spend the night before taking the day ferry from St Malo. Although it is expensive it makes a splendid finale to the holiday. Once again the food was excellent. We skipped the cheese course on the set menu. Our waiter was delightful educating us about the unusual wine we chose. The room was comfortable with a pleasant balcony but oh dear the shower!
It was a hand held with a small shower head and the fixture was about 2 feet above the bath so no chance of standing underneath to wash and feel refreshed after a long hot journey. The screen was not wide enough so I'm afraid we splashed water on the floor. At over £100 for one night - excluding breakfast - one expects a shower that is a little more comfortable.
We will return next year and hope for the standard we have had in previous years and which have been enjoyed by other visitors who have submitted reviews.

Room Tip: Check on the shower!

Dear Sir, Dear Madam,

Many thanks for commenting on your last stay in our Hotel,
please do mention the shower thing on your next booking, so we ensure you to get the best we have. Since you stayed with us, a few things have been improved, including the Hotel lobby.
Our Chef Olivier Valade has revisited a lots of our so called "signature" dishes, and he has brought lots of creativity and novelties, still using local fresh produce whether it be sea or earth made....
We are looking forward to receiving you again,
and wish you the Best Season's Greetings,
Yours Sincerely,
