“A hidden gem”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 17, 2014

This was a stop over hotel before embarking on Route Napoleons, and what a shame it was only one night. Driving into Eybens, we were a little worried by our surroundings, however once you've turned into the drive, you feel like you've entered into a different world. Beautiful old building that takes your breath away. Lovely grounds, small pool, spa and fitness room. Staff very pleasant and we received an upgraded room on arrival at no extra cost, which was spacious and had it's own terrace. Bathroom was large and modern. The restaurant is closed on Sundays and Mondays which we were advised of however the town has little in way of eateries. The hotel recommended a pizzeria, which we eventually found after a trek around the streets.

We stopped here for one night, it is the perfect location for picking up the route Napoleon the next morning. Great hotel, unfortunately the first room was full of mosquitoes but they were more than happy to move us. Ate at the hotel restaurant, beautiful dining room, service a little slow. Lovely hotel all in all.

Regrettably we can't mark this hotel any higher as our stay was on a Sunday and Monday night - the 2 nights when their restaurant is closed.
However, the manager was kind enough to suggest and book a wonderful restaurant - Chez le Per Gras - which is a must when visiting Grenoble. Not just offering magnificent food the view from the mountain top across Grenoble is utterly breath taking.
Back to the hotel - great breakfast buffet and tablets were made freely available for use while eating - something I've never come across before but an excellent touch.

The Commanderie, now run by four brothers, is situated on a superb site in Eybens, just outside the N87 southern ring road of Grenoble and a mere 10 minutes' drive from its centre, but you would never know. The main chateau, which houses the reception, various public rooms and the vast, impressive dining rooms, is set slightly apart from most of the 43 rooms of the hotel. There is a real sense of calm and peace, of relaxation and intimacy, almost as if one were sharing the lives of the lucky owners, whose well-behaved children can be encountered all over the grounds during holidays.

The reception is extremely friendly, and we were escorted (quite unnecessarily) to our room. The room (we opted for the slightly more expensive 'charm' room), was pleasant, clean and fresh, well double-glazed and cooled by the a/c. The bathroom was equally impressive with a wide range of quality goodies. We slept brilliantly, and were not woken or disturbed by noise from any other rooms. There was excellent and easy-to-use free wifi in the room.

The hotel has a lovely heated swimming pool with a decent shallow end for children, and comfortable seats, loungers and benches dotted about the park.

There is very little to complain about here, but the restaurant needs some attention. There were three menus on offer, one, the cheapest and quite clearly the simplest, for hotel guests only. At 29€ it offered little choice and little of interest although quantities were good. Then there is a huge leap to the other menus, and the a la carte menu showed most starters at 20€ and mains at 35€, which is steep in my book. This means that you can have the 'cheap' menu on your first night but have some real problems thereafter- we went out locally. The hotel needs to find some way of bridging this gap. Wines are expensive too, with the cheapest 'cotes de l'Ardeche' at just under 30€. Most decent wines were at least 40€.

Breakfast is extra, so beware, and at 16.50€ not cheap. That said it was a decent buffet with just about everything you could want including freshly-squeezed orange juice. Free iPads are available at breakfast time - but cannot be removed.

There is a large terrace for eating outside, breakfast included when the weather permits, and a clever structure allows roof slats to be angled and side panels to be rolled up or down in case of wind.

In summary we enjoyed this venue enormously and would recommend it heartily to anyone wanting to stay in the Grenoble area or needing a place to stay overnight. Only the restaurant prices niggled me, and I hope the hotel will address this issue.

Room Tip: Pay a little more for the comfort rooms - they are bigger and have seating space.

This tucked away hotel and spa in the suburb of Eybens in Grenoble is superb, in terms of the quality of the rooms, the service, the grounds, spa, fitness rooms, and the general friendliness and helpfulness of the staff. Easy and extensive parking in the gardens, which are secured at night.

When we arrived, dusty and tired on the long drive back to the UK we were met by Charlene on Reception, who could not have been more charming and helpful - leading us to our room and checking out that everything was just right. Their restaurant is not open on a Sunday night (which they had advised us when making the booking) so we went of for a quiet walk to a nearby local restaurant (Buffalo Wings steak house - cheap and cheerful American diner - what you see is what you get), and then back to the bar for a quiet evening nightcap.

The breakfast next morning was excellent- iPads on the tables to catch up with everything, squeeze your own orange juice machines, probably the lightest and creamiest scrambled eggs ever - what more to say? Oh, yes, we left our passports in the hotel room and the gentleman at the hotel reception desk immediately rang us on route, so we could backtrack and pick them up - waiting for us safe and sound at the desk.

For the very high quality of the hotel, the rooms and the service levels the pricing is very reasonable.

Highly recommended.

Great reception, smiling and very helpful staff (merci Charline!). Massage at SPA was excellent (merci Francoise!). We appreciated decoration of our room. Dinner was delicious and we enjoyed it in the beautiful dining room with gorgeous decoration. I hope to come back there one day!!! More than just a 3 stars HOTEL!

Room Tip: if you want to use Spa, kindly ask your room in the same building where SPA is located.
