“I would give it more than 5 stars!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 12, 2014 via mobile

We wanted something quieter for our honeymoon and our expectations were far exceeded. From the personal, friendly service of all the staff, including Theresa, Melvin, Santiago and Ivan to the boat driver, cleaning staff, fishing guides, masseuse, etc., everyone calls you by your name and makes you feel at ease and at home. The staff is accommodating to any request you have. From the adventures like fishing, snorkeling, diving and Mayan Ruins, etc., to the abundance of both sea and land life, your days are full! We had the saltwater pool all to ourself every time we went (3-4 times) and that is priceless and something you will not get at the party resorts. It is laid back, it is rustic, it is everything we wanted for our honeymoon. We didn't miss our tv, laptop or cell phone one time. If you want to disconnect, relax, have adventures and feel like your part of the family this is definitely the place to go! We will be going back!!! Soon! Loved the place and loved the people! We stayed here for our honeymoon a few years ago (Aug 2011) and were lured by the gorgeous pictures and the sense that we were in store for great luxury. The beach was nice to look at but the sea was not comfortably accessible. We took a kayak out multiple times looking for the reef without any luck. Seems like that is a problem several guests have had. Also, I wanted to echo the comments made about the communal meal. As a honeymooning couple, we weren't looking to make new friends but wanted quality time together. The group meals with sub-par food (including a cool-whip dessert!) got in the way of that. We had stayed in the coppola resorts earlier in the trip and found the level of luxury, food, attentiveness to guest interests and needs far more suitable to the price point. As for the pool, we were at St. George's during low season so there was nobody on staff serving drinks or handing out towels by the small pool. The management did their best to make our stay enjoyable but when we tried to get off the island a day earlier than expected due to poor sleep in our cabin which was hot and humid (with a very noisy airconditioner), they insisted that they would charge us for the night we wouldn't be staying. Despite the appealing pictures, we would have been better off spending more time in Ambergis, where we were really able to relax.

This reviewer states that they visited THREE years ago - a little tough to respond to criticism after 3 years. Unfortunately this couple did not have the advantages of 1) our lowered cabana rates, 2) our new swimming beach, 3) our great chef who has been with us almost 2 years and receives glowing reviews, and 4) our remodeled Overwater Cabanas with gorgeous dropped ceilings that make for cool, comfortable sleeping. And we are always happy to provide a private table for couples (and groups), so it's sad when someone doesn't make their wishes known while at the resort, but chooses to complain after they leave. We have addressed all of these issues and we are very happy to have the highly satisfied guests who are kind enough to provide feedback on their thoroughly enjoyable vacations at St. George's. Our five-star service staff is unsurpassed, and we invite everyone to visit and enjoy the experience!

This is a great place for people who are looking for an adventure trip. Scuba diving, snorkeling, fishing, zip lining...all these activities are great and well planned out by the hotel. I'd for sure recommend doing the Mayan Ruin excursion, which includes a cool river boat ride. But, if you are looking for a beach, this place doesn't really have one. So we didn't spend much time lying around. It was a great time, but you just have to know that this is a vacation for those who want to be doing things all the times, not for someone looking to relax on the beach.

Glad you had a great time at St. George's Caye, and thank you for taking the time to post your feedback for others. The activities are truly awesome experiences.

Comments about "no beach" are perplexing to us as we do have a white sand beach running the 300' length of our property bordering the open Caribbean Sea - been there for many, many years. We have the beach furnished with palapas, lounge chairs and chaiselounges, so our guests can sit in the sun or in the shade. On the west side of our island, we have a smaller beach with walk-in swimming in the ocean as well as excellent snorkeling around our docks. We just completed the swimming beach, so perhaps it was not available during your visit - but it is now!

As to your comment about St. George's not being a place to relax on the beach, we invite everyone to read the many, many TripAdvisor reviews by our guests who did come down just to unwind and relax - and they report that St. George's Caye Resort is the absolute perfect place for this. Our guests say it best!

Again, glad you enjoyed St. George's - we appreciate you joining us. Hope this additional information is helpful to everyone. Thank you.

This small island is about a mile long and 100-200 meters wide. If you dive, fellow guests loved the diving, reached by a resort boat for a fee. There are no restaurants or stores - you buy all meals and boat activities and the cost can hit over US$500/day without much effort. There were only 6-10 guests there, all personable folks, and it felt like our own friendly resort. I'm guessing the max occupancy is maybe 20-25. The small clean pool was barely used. The staffers in the restaurant and bar were phenomenal, as were the excursion and activity staff. Food was unremarkable, although guests who came back with conch, lionfish and barracuda shared the catch for a couple unique dinners. The rooms have air conditioning necessary in the hot months. The over-water room decks (and wharf) on the leeward side are hot, although guests said the rooms stayed cool. We were on the windward side (a difference of 30-40 meters) and were cool enough. The beach is hard pack sea shell/sand, but the water is all sea grass and the bottom is murky/muddy. The pier takes you about 150 feet out and you can swim off of it above the grass. You can sail a Hobie cat or take a kayak (both free) a mile offshore and find sandy bottom in 2-10 feet of water (depending on tides) near the reef. Or row/sail to one of the nearby small islands or beaches to get some variety. Snorkeling excursions are available for a fee along with the SCUBA dives.
The coffee and juice are left on your deck at 6 a.m. but if it's windy at all, the coffee is lukewarm by 6:30. If I went to Belize again, and didn't dive, I'd enjoy the jungle longer and perhaps just spend 2-3 days at a safe mainland beach town (not near Belize City, which is uninspiring to say the least).

Room Tip: Rooms on either side have nice views; the two interior cabins have, generously speaking, a garden v...

Thank you very much for taking the time to provide your feedback. Sounds like you enjoyed the activities and social aspect of St. George's. Our activities may not be for everyone - but we do offer a wide variety - many complimentary and some services for a fee. I've also mentioned our brand new swimming beach and snorkeling area in response to the last review, so will not repeat it here. We wish you totally enjoyable travels in the future, and thank you for visiting St. George's Caye in Belize.

St. George's Resort is on a tiny island about 15 minutes by boat from Belize City. It's probably about a mile long, and very narrow -- so narrow that you can walk the width of the island in literally 97 steps (I counted!). I was warned that there's not much to do here unless you're a diver, but the idea of a private island appealed to me so we went. Probably the biggest disappointment is the lack of a beach. There's very little sand (a storm washed most of it away and formed a sand bar way out to sea). The water is full of sea grass and fine sediment mud - yucky to walk in. I hear that this sea grass is a problem for most islands in the area, so it's not just St George's. There is a modest pool, thank goodness, or we would have roasted.

If you go, make sure you opt for the Ocean Front cabanas. We made the mistake of reserving an "Ocean View" and that's a total misnomer (see pictures). Those two cabanas face the cabanas in front - the ocean is not to be seen. Also, it's hot in those units because the breeze is blocked. The cabanas "over the water" are on the brutally hot side of the island that gets no breeze. However, the Lodge recently lowered the ceilings in those so the air conditioners would work better, and fellow guest staying there said they were perfectly comfortable. We moved to the Ocean Front cabanas on our second night and it was much better. A cooling breeze (sometimes a gale) kept things comfortable. The bed was good as was the shower.

Good things: The setting is pretty. You can see the many colors of the ocean and the gardens around the resort are well maintained. You can use their Hobie Cat sail boats and kayaks for free. I also took a complementary "in pool" scuba lesson from Jose (excellent teacher) and that was fun. We took the snorkel trip for $45 per person, which was great. We had a driver, Jose and 6 guests on a small boat, which anchored out by the reef and we had a good time. Every night, you get a rum drink on the house. The staff at the hotel is so friendly and helpful - special kudos to Theresa, Jose and Salvador. The cabanas are comfortable -- wood paneled and tasteful. Coffee and juice is left on your deck every morning at 6:15 a.m. Since the resort is so small, you kind of feel like it's your place. I liked that. Meals are served family style with the other guests and we had a pretty good group (ranging from 6 to 11 people).

Average: Food is ok. Soups were good, the tres leche cake was outstanding. Internet access in the bar/dining area.

Not so great: Expensive! You have to buy your meals ($60 per person per night). With our ocean front cabana and meals for two, it was $460 a night before taxes. Other things: the lousy beach, as described above. The lack of things to do -- probably because there's literally no where to go! If you want to get off the island for excursions to the mainland, it's quite pricey and excursions are only offered on certain days.

We booked for 4 days, and I would have been happy with 3.

Room Tip: Go for the Ocean FRONT cabanas - not the Ocean View cabanas. As noted above, Ocean View is...not...

Thank you for posting your detailed report on St. George's Caye. We appreciate you acknowledging the many positive qualities and services at the resort. At the same time we think it is important for readers to understand a few things.

We do in fact have a nice size beach - it's about 40 feet wide and runs the length of our property. It is equipped with chaise lounges and beach chairs, and features small table with palapas. Many of our guests spend a great deal of time on the beach - reading, sleeping, relaxing and watching the ocean. Of course you are correct that this beach is not a walk-in swimming beach. Swimming has been enjoyed in the ocean by going in off our large guest dock right in front. But we are listening, and in fact have been working on how to provide an excellent swimming beach, and it is almost completed! Here is what will be published, along with pictures, within a matter of days:

"As we continue to upgrade our very popular signature “St. George’s Caye Experience” we are ever mindful of the ecosystem of which we are a part. Our guests have always enjoyed our beautiful sandy beach on the reefward side of the caye that spans the length of our oceanfront property, but because the ocean bottom contains a heavy silt layer and substantial sea grass (part of the nursery operation for reef fish and other creatures), walking into the ocean there is not practical. But for our sensibility to the environment and ecosystem, it would be easy to construct sea walls, dredge the ocean bottom and move tons of sand to create a large walk-in beach. So we have been in a quandary and looking for how to have a great swimming beach (and snorkeling area) while maintaining our stewardship of the caye.

After input from our veteran staff with well over 50 years combined experience tending to the island and the reef, we identified an excellent location across our property in a protected area on the leeward side of the caye that already had a sandy bottom and could relatively easily be turned into a beautiful swimming beach and snorkel area without disturbing the natural ecosystem. This location, between our saline pool to the east and our nearly completed new reception dock to the west, enjoys milder breezes and gorgeous sunsets! It is a great launching area for kayaks as well. As we set up our lounges and beach chairs with comfy cushions on the new sand beach, we look forward to our guests enjoying walk-into-the-ocean swimming and an excellent snorkeling experience right on property."

As to "a lack of things to do," each of our guests gets to design their own paradise. Some choose to just unwind and relax and soak in the Caribbean breeze and sun. Others choose between complimentary activities like kayaking, sailing, swimming in the pool, windsurfing, visiting the on-island aquarium, snorkeling right off the island, and now our sandy swimming beach. And their are many other options - SCUBA diving, dive training, snorkeling over the reef as you mentioned, guided tours to the jungle, Cave Tubing, Zip Lining, Maya Temple and Ruins, St. Herman's cave exploration, museums, the brewery and the rum factory. After 15 years down here, I've still got more to do, and I invite others to come and "design their own paradise."

Dive masters Jose and Freddie were great and so accommodating to novice divers. Santiago and the resort staff were there with all our needs. My wife is allergic to shellfish and has gluten allergy. They worked around it perfectly. We will be back. We hate touristy places. This was like staying at a friends house. Also accolades to the lad that rakes the sand starting at 5:30am everyday. Had some great conversations. And don't forget the boat driver Sampo, yeah man!!!

My husband and I spent our honeymoon here at St. George's Caye Resort. We absolutely loved it. There was a lot to do, yet we didn't feel pressured or rushed into doing anything. We got to schedule trips when we wanted to at the time we felt it was convenient for us. (We recommend cave tubing, btw). Also, the massages that came with the package were AMAZING. Anacelia ( the masseuse) is the best masseuse I've ever had. She really puts 110% effort into her clients and was able to help my body feel great again after only an hour session with her of deep tissue. That was probably my favorite part of the resort. The ocean front cabanas were beautiful, and the staff was so friendly. The food that they prepared was awesome....everything was great. We loved it.
