“Very good hotel in an excellent resort”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 19, 2012

Booked through Thomson for a 10 night stay. The 2 hour journey to Menorca went smoothly and the bus transfers were good with no delays. Cala Galdana is a beautiful, small, relatively quiet resort. The hotel is a short walking distance from the sandy beach and safe swimming waters of the Med. If speedy, noisy water sport is your compulsion, you may have chosen the wrong resort, because the quiet pedalo or the pedalling canoe is all you can expect.
I thought the hotel was very good. We were at the front of the hotel which gave us a balcony bird's eye view of all the evening entertainment. For some this may be a little tiresome, depending upon the quality of the particular tribute act, but that's entertainment. Many have commented on the food provided. I must admit it could have been of a higher standard, which was a pity because in almost every other aspect it is a hotel and certainly the resort I would most heartily recommend. Having good settled weather also helped.

Room Tip: We were based over the front entrance to the hotel, on the third floor. We had no complaints.

Returned today from a weeks stay. Reading the past months reviews I can only concur. The design of the hotel is dated nowadays. This really shows in the dining area where the buffet serveries are shaped like boats and the walls have nautical ropes and knots. Staff here are very busy and often when talking to you are looking elsewhere. This is unless you are a regular stayer when you are treated like a close family friend. There is a fair selection of food but not necessarily cooked as we would like. Battered broccoli springs to mind. The man doing eggs on the griddle in the morning and fish or meat in the evening is a bundle of laughs !!
The hotel in general is very clean. Yes the pool is cold but it is October, and yes it is warmer in the sea. Plenty of room around the pool, well there was when the hotel was about 50% occupied.
I found the entertainment very good for a hotel. After all it's not the West End.
The revamped Audax and the big Sol Gavilanes hotel on the cliff with its terrace bar ten levels up overlooking the bay puts Hotel Cala Galdana very much in the shade.
As others have said the location is possibly the best in Menorca.
If I had not got the holiday for a fraction of the brochure price I would be very disappointed.

Room Tip: It's either at the rear looking at a cliff, always in the shade but quiet (no extra cost) or at...

We traveled as a couple and returned 10 days ago after 2 weeks at the Hotel Cala Galdana. Our room, the hotel and pool area were spotless. We couldn't ever sit on our balcony from late afternoon onwards or early morning as the people next door continually smoked. We couldn,t even have the door open as it drifted in.The same applies to the lovely entrance with rattan sofa's and chairs that once again were taken over by smoker's. There is a perfectly laid out area just a bit further away from the entrance where they could sit. I agree with the lack of a smile in the restaurant and the food left something to be desired we ate out several times. Why do they turn the coffee machines off in the evening you don't even get a bottle of water on your table you have to pay.I must say Tanya our rep. was lovely even though she was poorly for a few days and in a lot of pain we still got a smile. We will return to Cala Galdana but not to this hotel. It's a pity that there aren't tea and coffee making facilities in the room.

We stayed at this hotel 2 weeks ago, nearly in the end of season, for a short weekend getaway.
Cala Galdana itself is a fantastic resort, an amazing bay with crystal clear water. Fantastic for some lazy days relaxing on the beach and some good enough snorkelling.
The hotel is a couple of minutes from the beach in front of the gorge, and by the main strip of restaurants and shops. It has a large public car park in front.
Reception area is large and light, very modern and comfortable, with free wifi.
Reception staff were friendly and helpful.
We booked a room with sea view and stayed on the 5th floor. The room was comfortable, modern with lots of light. It had a small balcony with a couple of chairs and a small table. Nice to seat late afternoon, but no privacy whatsoever. The adjacent rooms balconies are really close.
Bathroom was on the small side, and could use with some more complimentary toiletries (only shampoo and body wash provided).
We only had breakfast at the hotel. Restaurant was a bit dated, and staff didn't really make an effort to be nice. They had some nice bread every morning, but other than that, nothing worth mentioning. The hot drinks were actually the worst I've ever had. Still, some juices and yoghurts were available. Even though breakfast only ended at 11am, at 10.30 the waiters were already disconnecting the toasters, and clearing the buffet.
They have entertainment every night, so be ware that if you stay in a sea view room, you'll be able to hear everything, even with the balcony doors closed. For us, this wasn't a problem at all, as we were either out at that time, or just watched it from the balcony.
On our last day, we left our bags at a designated room near the reception area and enjoyed the beach after check out. We were able to use the shower by the gym, but no toiletries were provided.
We're a couple on our 30s, and felt that most of the hotels guests were a lot older.
Overall it was a great base to explore Menorca, and would definitely return to Cala Galdana.

Room Tip: Sea views are nice, but beware of entertainment during the evening.

We stayed as a family in June in the 2 bed self catering apartments but had half board in the Hotel. It is misleading as the apartments are on the street outside the hotel complex. The apartments are on a main road which can be noisy. They are spacious but not 4 stars;there is nothing to cook with not even a kettle to make a drink. No utensils either .This is probably to make you spend your money in the hotel. They are clearly 3 stars. The hotel is relaxed with pleasant staff and teh food was above average for half board, still canteen like in manner but a good choice. The children's enertainers were brilliant, two lovely women. In all Thomson need to make it clearer in the brochure that you are no where near the hotel ,merely using its facilities staying in mediocre accomodation.Cala Galdana is still a stunning resort with plenty for the family.

3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 14, 2012

My wife and I returned from a weeks holiday at the Cala Galdana. The holiday was wonderfully relaxing, and the hotel Cala Galdana was a great base to explore the island and enjoy the resort. We traveled towards the end of the season, so the resort was pretty quiet when we were there. Just what the doctor ordered.

The hotel describes itself and appears to be rated by Thomson as a 4 star. I would rate it as a 3 star for a number of reasons, but these factors can be worked around if you have the time, money and patience.

Firstly the positive things, and this report is largely positive.

The hotel itself is very clean and tastefully decorated throughout. The reception area and piano bar are very comfortable, and have reasonably good free wifi for those that wish to use it.

Our room was at the top floor, facing the rear of the hotel and a wonderful 'waterfall' feature, which was soothing and peaceful. It is cooler at the back of the hotel and is more private, especially if you don't want to be disturbed by the noise from the pool area stage and the evenings entertainment. The lack of a sea view didn't bother us, as the beach was so close and could be enjoyed at any other time we liked. The room was spotlessly clean, and was tended to each day by the friendly housekeeping staff. The bed was extremely comfortable and I had a good nights sleep most nights. The bathroom, although small was excellent. The wonderful walk in shower was powerful and relaxing, but the option to have a bath would have been nice. A safe was available at a reasonable surcharge, but you are unable to leave your key (or your room key) with the hotel staff during the day if you go out, for security. There were only two power outlets available, and a lack of tea making facilities were a bit annoying. The fridge was small, but useful to store water and other food.

The service by the staff was largely very good. I did find the reception staff helpful, but a little brusque in their attitude. Although the young man on reception with the pony tail was a very personable guy, and kindly assisted in pointing out the better options for car hire in the resort. The restaurant staff were rushed off their feet and did not offer what I would expect of a 4 star hotel. More on the restaurant later. The unsung stars of the hotel staff are the housekeeping, who are polite and friendly, always with a kind word and do an excellent job throughout. But it is the bar staff who steal the show and are held in high esteem it seemed by a lot of the returning customers to this hotel. Rapid, good quality service with a friendly attitude. They rightly deserve the tips they get. The cocktails and long drinks are well made, which is always a good sign. Also need to have a special mention for Patricia who runs the entertainments during the day and the evening. She works so hard to get people involved in the bar games, beach visits and local . activities. Some people find these things annoying, but she takes it in her stride and just moves on. But she is very lively and helps with the friendly atmosphere around the pool.

The pool area and bar is very nice indeed, fringed by date palms and shrubs. Be warned, the pools are cold (much colder than the sea, at the nearby beach). But if you are happy to endure the initial shock the swimming is very pleasant, especially if the heat gets to you like it does with me. Better to just jump straight in than to wade in. There were plenty of sun beds and shades, contrary to other comments, but in the high season, the pool area would get very busy I imagine. My wife and I enjoyed watching the local bird life, sparrows, finches and the like, flying around the pool, collecting crumbs and scraps. Occasionally they would come to bathe at the edge of the children's pool when it was quiet which was a very charming sight, most of the nearby guests were captivated by it.

The evenings entertainment were a mixed and mostly cheesy affair. The cabaret and soul singing acts were the superior entertainment in my opinion, but this is only personal preference. We avoided the chinese acrobatic act, lady gaga tribute act (although this seemed popular) and the Take That tribute act (who also did Westlife WTH?!?!). Once you have seen the real thing twice, a poor tribute act would be disappointing I think. Avoid the parrot act at all costs. Whilst the animals are lovely, they are made to do the most mundane and awful tricks. Also, they charged to have your photo taken with these beautiful creatures. It shouldn't be allowed in this day and age really. At least they appeared healthy and well cared for.

The Audax hotel is widely regarded as having the best evening entertainment locally, and we went there one evening when an excellent acoustic guitarist was playing...much more my cup of tea. Again, the bar is excellent there.

My main gripe is the restaurant. There is quite a lot of improvement needed here, and I have a long list of things I didn't like so here goes.

Firstly the restaurant service. The restaurant is woefully understaffed and at best I could describe the service as 'perfunctory'. I don't think we were smiled at once by any member of staff, save for the head 'waiter'. It is a buffet service restaurant at both breakfast and evening meal times (There is no lunch service). Whilst I have no problems with a buffet service, this is NOT worthy of a 4 star restaurant in any sense. I would expect freshly cooked food and friendly, professional table service, before even thinking of adding that fourth star. All the staff appeared to do was to clear tables and bring drinks to the tables. There were no wine lists or drinks menus available, unlike at the bar, so no apparent choice. However the wine we did have was pretty good. The majority of the food was pretty bland, and I enjoyed very little of it with the exception of the steak, which was cooked in front of me. With the exception of the 'grill area' could not be considered fresh in any way, and I would suspect it was cooked from frozen probably with the help of a microwave. Desert appeared to either be a selection of bland patisseries, or ice cream. I usually opted for fruit and ice cream. Breakfast was not a lot better, and I felt was largely unappealing. We usually started with either cereal, bread or fruit, and I rapidly went off the cooked food options, especially the eggs (No poached, only fried or scrambled). Thankfully the muesli and all bran was available. The restaurant has a distinctly nautical theme, and is comfortable.

In summary, the hotel was pretty good. Not quite a 4 star due to the gripes about the restaurant and slightly less than classy evening entertainments, and some reservations on service. The main positives were the rooms, communal areas, and especially the bar and pool areas. Probably more appealing to the older clientele, but this shouldn't put you off if you are a sociable kind of person. We would certainly return to Cala Galdana, but next time I might try the Audax, as that seemed a little more refined and geared towards 30 something couples.

Room Tip: If you want peace and quiet, chose a rear facing room, on the top floor. Cool and relaxing.

Just returned from this hotel. Lovely resort and beach.

To spite booking almost a year ago through Thomson was given a side room overlooking kitchen, avoid all rooms ending in 22, eg 122, 222, 322 etc as you are located to the side of hotel overlooking service yard to the right and recycling / bin storage to the left (the bin area is hidden with green fencing and a roof) but is all you can see. Straight ahead is the little used public steps leading to the top road of the resort and trees. The balcony gets no sun whatsoever. The balconies throughout the hotel are small - think marble hearth supported by brackets with metal fence around. Ist floor balconies are larger - room 122 balcony is a terrace and because the hillside is ground level and sided by green fence and 2 walls the view below is the delivery yard. There is a constant low noise in the -22 rooms because of deliveries, and extractor fan and generators to the kitchen. Guaranteed daily wake up call 05:30 - re-cyling and 07:00 refuse collection.

Bedrooms were of a good size (layout may vary in front and rear rooms) with mini fridge, flat screen TV, settee and good clothes storage. Beds were very comfortable and housekeeping excellent. There is no kettle supplied. Decor was a bit tired.

Bathroom was tired, cracked tiles, poor quality shower. The bidet was situated directly in front of the toilet (again this may be because we were a side room) anyone with mobility or standing may find using the toilet difficult to sit and stand as knee room was restricted.

During our stay there was only one room open to eat in. The first week queues and 20-30 minute waits whatever time you arrived. The second week was quiet and one of the 'hotplates' was closed. The food was typical Spanish fayre, tepid and a large selection of repeated dishes. There was little selection of vegetable and chips with everything. Vegetarians would struggle as meat was mixed with flan, rice, pasta's etc. The desert selection was large but only cakes and ices. Waiters were attentive if buying drinks but ignored you if you refused. Surprised to see that no room numbers were ever asked for on arrival to meals - seemed to encourage people who obviously were not staying at hotel to 'eat for free'.

Pool area was nice, I would imagine that sunbeds would be limited when hotel was full as usual people 'reserved' bed and left empty for hours (even to go on day trips) - This really should be policed! Lifeguard started to put beds away from 4pm onward - pool open until 8pm. Pool refreshing but no colder than other hotels.

Gym equipment limited, door always locked.

Entertainment was varied and held around pool area - even on chiller evenings when the furniture was wet. No noise after 11pm and balcony light go off at 11pm.

Beach is lovely and sea very safe. Hired car from car hire to the left of hotel £98 for 1 week, unlimited mileage, 2 drivers, full insurance (possibly called AG hire). Eurocar was 2x as much for similar car. Explore island and go to large supermarkets in the industrial area of Citadella. Fort Mola is a must - be aware in October it closes at 2pm and allow at least 2 hours for a visit.

Would visit this resort again but not use this hotel

Room Tip: Avoid rooms which end 22 as these are to the side of the hotel.
