5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 15, 2012

We had a fantastic 3 nights here - real Spanish hospitality. Fantastic views of the lagoon from our room- you could see flamingos, spoonbills, glossy ibis etc without even using binoculars! The staff spoke sufficient Spanish and were very generous. We booked half-board and all our drinks were 'gratis' free, as was the local port from cask in the lounge and snacks such as fresh strawberries or biscuits and cheese. Breakfast was in the restaurant where several locals, including the local police, also breakfasted. The streets of sand were no problem as the town was fairly empty midweek. When we later visited a 4* beach resort we felt the service and value were much below that we experienced here.

Room Tip: ask for a lagoon view

We ate at the Toruno restaurant for 3 evenings (stayed at La Malvasia a short walk away). When given the a la carte menu, we asked if there was a menu del dia, which we were then given verbally. It was great on all occasions, an example being: chickpeas with spinach, followed by venison steak in a pepper sauce, cheesecake for pudding and a lovely bottle of wine, all for just over 30 euros for two. Water and coffees extra. This restaurant over looks the lake. We found all the serving staff very helpful, and most spoke excellent English.

Another great spot to eat is the thatched restaurant overlooking the lake at the main road end(closed Mondays), Aires de Donana. Best at lunchtime because of the views of the birdlife: flamingoes, spoonbills, storks and hundreds of others, too numerous to mention.

We were there for Donana and the Birds which was just great! The Hotel is perfectly adequate as is the Restaurant but probably all is overpriced for the level of service and ammenities. The dirt roads are there because it is a heritage sight and will never change. The Rocio Pilgramage is a huge event at Pentecost attracting 500,000 people and 100,000horses according to our Park Guide. The rest of the year it is not that busy. We were there on a weekend and it was most enjoyable to see people around the town on horses and in wagons drawn by horses. It is all about the Church and the brotherhoods that gather there too. The park has 3 Interpretive centres that are all well worth a visit but to see a larger variety of Birds, wildife, and fauna it is best to take a tour with one of the operators because access without is restricted.

Room Tip: request one overlooking the Marsh

I spent three nights at this hotel which is tucked away on the edge of Donana NP. The rooms are clean and tidy but space is limited, the bathroom is OK. There are no tea/coffee making facilities within the hotel. The hotel staff are friendly and helpful but their English is very limited. The location is ideal for birdwatchers. The town is a pilgrimage site for about one week per year. The associated restaurant is about 30 metres away and opens about 8 a.m.

Room Tip: If you're a birdwatcher ask for room 109 as it has good views over the marsh.

We arrived at El Rocio at night...after our bus and we were searched by police with drug sniffing dogs, we were off to a dark walk down a dirt 'street'....the only thing we could see were hoofprints....we did find the hotel rather easily with directions from the bus driver, but we looked a bit haggard and weary once we checked in. Not sure about the security issues....I think this may be a tight security location due to drug smuggling in the past, but we felt very safe once we arrived. The hotel is situated right on a lagoon and it was LOVELY to watch the sunrise/sunsets from our room. The room was very quaint...small, but very clean. The staff was awesome. We had to cancel our donana park tour due to fog in the a.m. and the staff let us stay with the room through the day until the bus came late in the afternoon. The staff was extremely accommodating and friendly. This is a birders paradise. Loved the location and loved the hotel. Would highly recommend, just don't expect luxury accommodations.

Room Tip: I forget the room number....maybe 214....but it was a corner room and faced the lagoon....there are...

Nothing wrong with the place really, just a bit uninspired as a hotel. Fantastic location for birdwatchers. Rooms quite small. Staff friendly. Was undergoing renovations while we were there which did not help. Food at adjacent restaurant average by Spanish standards

We spent two nights in El Rocio during a tour of Andalucia. Hotel Toruno is located right at the edge of the marches with all rooms having small balconies and a view of them - bird lovers can start watching the Donana wildlife (best equipped with binoculars) directly from the hotel. The room was clean and nice, but nothing special. Breakfast and dinner (half borad is great value for money!) are served in the hotel's excellent restaurant on the other side of the sandy street. The only drawback was that staff insisted several times (even after we had understood) that half board was only for two people in the double room, but not for the child in the extra bed - we had to order a la carte in addition.

El Rocio itself is a weird place that appears to Catholic worshippers, ornithologists and horse riders, so you'll meet plenty of these, plus a few tourists.
