This hotel has some good points - nice decor, friendly staff. Our room (205) was good-sized with a lovely bathroom. We were going rafting early one morning and they arranged to open the kitchen specially for us. There was no peeling paint, no stains on the carpets, everything was extremely clean. Clearly money has been spent on it. It's right in the centre of town which is convenient but, as you will see, also has its drawbacks. The first problem that we encountered was that the bed in our room was a small double, with a hard, lumpy matttress. There was barely enough room for both of us (my partner's feet hung off the end), but we were told that there were no other rooms available. The first night's sleep was poor, but on the second night (Saturday) there were drunks yelling outside our window until 4am. As it was too warm to close the window, we suffered through it on the small, uncomfortable bed. Around 3am, the police arrived and it went quiet until they moved off, when the noise began again. When we told the management the next morning, they asked us to fill in a form for the police, which suggests that this is a regular occurence. The other variable was the food. In contrast to another reviewer, I would only recommend the fish and chips, which my partner really enjoyed. I tried 2 lamb dishes (cutlets costing £12.50) and a burger for lunch and they were both disappointing to the point of insult. The first was 4 tiny, dried-up lamb McNuggets which were supposedly organic, from a local farm. The second tasted like a toasted flip-flop. There is a clearly a problem with their lamb supplier, which is astonishing given the location. The cooked breakfast was, however, generous and tasty although it did take a while, even when the restaurant was not busy. The young Polish girl who served us was extremely nice and helpful. One final, small complaint: the toiletries were nasty little packets. These days, at these prices, customers expect better. If you stay here on a weekend, my advice is to ask for a room at the back of the hotel. It faces a grim housing estate but it will be quieter. And don't order anything involving lamb.
