“Great facilities but, rooms.......could be better.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 2, 2012

The Porthcawl Hotel was great if you only want to spend a brief time in your room. Situated in the small town of Porthcawl, it had a lot of positives but, my negative thoughts would be this:

Negatives
=========
1) Would not recommend for an older couple - Hotel is more of a Stag/Hen Do, Lads and Ladies venue.
2) Bedrooms are hit and miss. Myself and 3 friends went away and had 2 rooms. My friends room was okay but, ours was awful. Very bad smell, uncomfortable beds and generally musty feel. TV was not working at all. Ours was small and cramped but, our friends had more room, a working tv and no smell.
3) No car park - Pay and Display down the road.
4) Carpeted bathroom - Sounds finicky but, if this place is where inebriated folk would be sleeping i fear what the carpet may contain in the bathroom.

Positives
=======
1) Very good bar/food area - In particular, the Sports Bar area was fantastic. Went during Euro 2012 and it was a great atmosphere, good prices and good staff.
2) Good staff - appreciate that this was mentioned above but, all over they were very polite
3) Good gym - If this is your bag, this is really good. Sauna in there and a punch bag room and free weights.
4) Good Nightclub - 'Streets' is really well set out and if you are staying at the hotel, has free entry. By some of the pictures i saw, they also do aerobics in it during the day.
5) 30 minutes from Cardiff, 25 from Swansea. Not bad for a location i would say.

So, rooms aside, better than average. Facilities and location was all good. I could have probably complained about the room and would have been moved but, i lived so hey ho!

We visited the hotel in August 2011 and it looked very promising from the outside as it looked revamped.

Upon arrival there was no one at reception for sometime and had to go to the bar to find someone to assist us.

The room is very big, however very old looking. The tap broke upon arrival and took 2 hours for someone to attend to it, this was no fixed, but limited the noise.

On the positive side, its right in the centre of town and the price is not bad either.

In conclusion, I don't think I would return and would rather try another hotel.

This hotel is situated on a corner in Porthcawl. It does not have its own car park but there is a pay and display carpark nearby. If you are lucky a place on the roadside may be empty.

The hotel seems to sprawl, and has a bar as well as an exercise floor. The loud banging music from the gym can start early; 07:40 was the earliest during my stay. Not only is the music loud, but the bedroom also vibrates! There is also a nightclub on site which operates at weekends.

My first room had two small single beds, with the heating full on. Unfortunately, it also stank of used cigarettes. Inside a draw, I found empty beer cans, stuffed with dogends and ash.

I asked for a different room which was gladly given with apologies. This was bigger and brighter with a double bed. It was comfortable and clean and the heating was not full on. Furniture was sparse and had seen better days, but that was of no consequence to me. Likewise the decor.

The en suite bathroom was basic but again clean. The shower ran off the bath taps, but had nowhere to hang the shower head. Towels were clean and reasonably fluffy.

Breakfast was in the bar, and consisted of tea, coffee, small boxes of cereals, yogurts, muffins, cereal bars, and make your own toast. Although breakfast finishes at 09:30, don't leave it late, as everything will have been packed away. Dinner is also served in the bar, and portions are large and good value.

The staff are friendly and seem to have a "can do" attitude which was great. They are a definite asset to the establishment.

The hotel is in need of refurbishment, as it all feels a little tired and needing some t.l.c. There is no lift, and so disabled guests may have some difficulties. The hotel seems to be a bit of a rabbit warren with lots of stairs and corridors. It also needs to decide if it is a hotel, a gym or a nightclub. My feeling is that they are trying to be all things to all people - locals and travellers alike. Nothing wrong with that, especially if a refurbishment includes sound proofing.

Room Tip: Check late booking deals - it is good value

I visited this hotel for a stag do (gorge walking activity) with 12 friends - the hotel is clean, the bar was full (always a good sign!) and the staff were very friendly and helpful. I stayed in room 208 - the room has two single beds, everything was clean and presentable, although the heating was on full blast despite the sunny weather outside. I simply turned the radiator down. The shower in the room was somewhat disappointing - not a power shower and very difficult to get the temperature just right, but in the scheme of things that's hardly a big issue - you can just take a bath instead!!
We all ate a steak meal at the bar - very tasty and good value. All the drinks seemed to be £2.50 (pints, and double vodka and coke that I was enjoying!) which you can't sniff at.
One issue the others found was that the gym, which is on the second floor, started playing VERY loud dance music at 7am on the Saturday, which woke a few of the group up - not what you want with a hangover. We all agreed 7am was a touch early, and the music was ridiculously loud. Perhaps the hotel should invest in a few ipods for the local residents of Porthcawl who clearly like to keep fit!
The club attached to the hotel was pretty quiet on the Friday night, although we only realised on the Saturday that it has another room upstairs which seems to be where people congregate! The Saturday night was busy - the club was full. The bouncers are all friendly, although it has to be said they don't take any messing about - one of our group made the mistake of going out the wrong door - he wanted the smoking area, but exited the club instead, and was refused entry. So he climbed over the smoking area fence. He was spotted by a bouncer (he WAS wearing a two foot high afro wig!) and politely, but firmly, shown the door again, without further ado. He only had himself to blame!!
I would definitely visit this hotel again - it is good value for money, all the staff are very helpful and friendly, the food is good, the alcohol is cheap, and the beach, which is 2 mins walk up the road, is well worth a look (I was on the beach by 7am on the Saturday, watching the sun rise, with a hangover - the view, and the fresh sea air, did me a world of good!!). Apart from the music from the gym, and the shower, I had no complaints at all, and like I said, the shower is a minor issue as yoou can bath, and I wasn't woken by the pumping dance music as I was awake already!

Room Tip: I had room 208 which had a view of the enclosed courtyard only - but this isn't directly over th...

Visited in Jan 2012 under a living social offer which included 3 course meal, wine, nightclub entry, room and breakfast for a grand total of £42 for my wife and I. Lest's be honest here, for that price I was expecting it to be awful, so much so that we nearly didn't go. However we were pleasantly surprised!! Ok, at our evening meal, many of the menu options were not available but the food was good as was the wine. The nightclub was a hoot (even if we were the oldest there!). Our hotel room was clean, basic but very large. Breakfast was just toast and cereal but what a bargain for the money!!

5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 14, 2012

My wife and I have just had an overnight stay at this hotel using a Living Social voucher offer.
Our room 201 was excellent. It was fully carpeted including the en-suite bathroom. It had T.V., central heating, and tea/coffee making facilities. Nice clean fluffy towels. The evening meal had to be taken at the sister hotel The Atlantic a 10 minute walk aLONG THE SEA FRONT. THIS HOTEL WAS FAR SUPERIOR IN STARS TO THE PORTHCAL HOTEL BUT OF COURSE THE COST WOULD HAVE BEEN MUCH GREATER. THE EVENING MEAL THERE WAS VERY GOOD, AND THE PORTIONS AS HAS BEEN MENTIONED BY PREVIOUS REVIEWERS WERE HUGH. THE MENU HAD A VERY GOOD CHOICE OF STARTERS AND MAINS. INCLUDED IN THE OFFER WAS A BOTTLE OF HOUSE WINE WHUICH AGAIN WAS VERY NICE. In the morning at the Porthcawl Hotels we had a continental breakfast with unlimited cerial, toast, and fruit, and drinks. The one thing to remember is that on site there is a gym and health club and when they hold classes the music is loud and vibrates into every room. There is also a might club so I could not recomend going to this hotel on the nights that the club operates, again due to the noise, unless you are going to use the club.
There is no car parking on site but at the rear about 100 yards away there is a very large public car park on a pay and display basis, £1.50 for three hours and £3.00 over three hours. As this car park is very quiet I would not recommend that this ve used when dark. If you drive up to the sea frint road from the hotel, only 100 yards, turn right and after the first turing on the right take any other turning on the right and you should be able to find a FREE parking space in front on the many residential properties away from the lengths of no parking areas. We turned right alongside another hotel, owned by Leisureplex Hotels, named The Seabank.

Room Tip: As there is no lift try and get the lowest floor available i.e. floor 2.

My wife and i managed to get a room at the last minute and stayed at the Porthcawl Hotel. We were offered a room right at the top of the hotel but the boiler wasn't working so the radiators weren't on and the room was freezing. Spoke to the staff who helped and moved us to another room just above the gym. The room was lovely but no tv, so i had to run to our old room and nick the tv from there. The music coming up from the gym is louder than hell but we weren't bothered as we were getting ready and if i had my kit i would have joined in the gym class. We were sent up to the Atlantic (sister hotel) for food which was awesome. Really great food. We then visited a few of the pubs before coming back and sampling the ale in the hotel sports bar, that was an entertaining place with the average age being about 18. Some kids who were drinking underage got booted out while we were in there. We then went to the club which was free cos we were staying, i would not have fancied paying 8 quid to get in there. It was great fun and we danced like idiots for a while. We left at three and went back to the room where we could hear no noise. If both floors of the club had been open the room would have been bouncing with the noise coming through. The following morning the lovely Kath had some continental breakfast layed out for us which was perfect and just what we needed.
Overall the hotel is perfect for a fun night out in Porthcawl, it needs a bit of TLC and the hotel is obviously trying to be a number of different things and not really specializing in anything.
We would stay there again and at the price we paid on Living Social i don't think the hotel would have made anything from our visit, other than what we spent over the bar!
Staff are brilliant.
Bed lovely.
Brilliant location.

Room Tip: As far away from the gym and club as possible.
