“Wedding Party”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 9, 2013

We stayed last weekend Fri to Sun. The welcome from Caroline was excellent. Our room was lovely, spacious and with an awesome view on to the loch. Beds were really comfortable too. They catered for me ( Coeliac ) really well and it is much appreciated. Our party had dinner on Friday night and were wished an enjoyable meal and stay by the owner Nick, which was a nice touch. We really enjoyed dinner. Only irritation was being told by barman that he couldn't make a lager tops, and he had been in the business for 30 years, well so have I and felt like coming behind bar and teaching him how to pour a lager tops! Apart from that, breakfasts were lovely, as were waiting staff. Nothing was too much trouble, and we really enjoyed our stay and will definitely return! Thanks again!

Room Tip: We stayed in room 12. Loch view, fabulous. It doesn't have a bath, but that didn't matter to...

Your party were a pleasure to have come and stay with us and I am so pleased you all enjoyed the occasion. Sorry about the lager tops! The barman in question does actually know what it is but I am afraid he can be a little deaf especially when it is noisy and this is all I can put it down to! Next time we will get it right for you! That aside we will look forward to your next visit. Kind regards Nick

Nick & Nikki make you very welcome and nothing is too much trouble. Restaurant was excellent, we had the seafood platter to die for, what a feed. In fact everything was excellent - Staff, restaurant and room. Hopefully we can return in the near future, but next time I hope the weather will be kinder, no rain. Thank you all for a lovely stay, just wish it had been longer.

We had eaten in the restaurant several times over the years and had always promised ourselves the treat of an overnight stay. We were not disappointed. Our room was spacious with an excellent attention to detail. The staff were attentive without being intrusive and we had a most enjoyable (all too short) stay.

Has a wonderful weekend here in February when the light was just unbelievable and the warm welcome of the place even better than it was on a previous visit. And ignore whoever posted bad things about the barman. I'm not a relative or anything but he was a great guy. Keep up your "no customer skills" as I liked the service, the suggestions on wine and the general chit chat. Clearly its hard to pick ones guests !!

Food was huge and a bit scary because of that. All good and did not have any trouble picking things over the weekend. The hot chocolate on a cold day was also welcome. Ask for marshmallows. Great job guys. Keep it up.

Room Tip: Loch view best for sure.

Drive along gorgeous Loch Linnhe take the right turn to the Lismore ferry and be prepared to be delighted. The Pierhouse must occupy one of Scotland's most coveted locations and that is saying something. The view is superb. The island of Lismore is reached by the foot ferry just in front of the hotel. It is peaceful, endlessly enchanting to watch the little ferry going back and forth and watching the constantly changing seascape. The rooms are well appointed with really good beds, top quality bedding and smart bathrooms. Even the rooms at the back are delightful. There is a well stocked bar an excellent restaurant for more formal dining or really good bar meals are on offer. These can be taken on the terrace directly on the loch side. Breakfast is taken in the main restaurant and there can't be a better way to start the day than enjoy good freshly prepared food looking at that view. Easy to find but hard to leave. Delightful Pierhouse.

Room Tip: We had a rear facing room which was fine. The ones with loch views would be fantastic.

An excellent small hotel, set by the dock & small pebbly beach of Port Appin. We were brought here by friends who were already fans but they did not mislead us. The hotel staff are friendly & helpful and the rooms of high standard; our bed had a new mattress which was incredibly comfortable & the "rain" shower was bliss after a cold wet walk. We had a room facing the sea loch which was fantastic (if only we could have seen the view through the clouds!), I'm not sure about the view from the none "sea loch" rooms. The restaurant menu was delicious & I'm sure the sunsets on a fine evening are wonderful (see previous weather comment!). The fresh seafood was delicious & the food well presented. The Cullen skink was "oohed & aahed" over by my dining companions & I regretted not choosing it! My meal was wonderful & I even managed to find room for dessert, which again, did not disappoint. A wonderful find & a place I plan on returning to.

Room Tip: Rooms at the front are the "sea loch rooms" & look out across the water.

Well, I had rated this place as EXCELLENT in my previous reviews, and my other half saw them and put in her own opinion, which has now been factored into my own opinion - and this will provide potential guests with a highly accurate review of the establishment.

Port Appin is remote, down a single track road and the views over to Lismore upon reaching the hotel are indeed incredible. Parking on the shingle beach of Loch Linhe - very unusual.

Most of the staff - Lorraine, Bianca, Romy, Danielle - fantastic. Jeff, the barman, my wife thought had no customer skills at all but to me he is quite entertaining and obviously a local character. This, apart from the location, is what gives the Pierhouse it's lovely feel.

And now, why did it tip down from 5 to 3 stars for us? Pricing and some of the food. The rooms are very expensive for what they are, no matter if the bathrooms in both of the rooms we recently tried are well designed. The fresh fruit in the rooms and also the resident's lounge a nice touch, but in the middle of no-where, the pricing for the quality of the furnishings, for example, and the overall ambiance - way over the top. Other reviewers have nailed it by calling it "a very nice B+B attached to a restaurant". I think that is very fair on reflection.

The restaurant and bar are nice. The food is good, usually, but my last dinner of slightly overcooked lobster served with too many vegetables ( who for gawd's sake serves up a whole lobster with broccoli, cauliflower and potatoes)?? The use of Inverawe Smoked Salmon on mussels and the breakfast scramble - totally overpowering and not to my taste nor the other half's.

It is a lovely location, the staff, on the whole. fantastic. Some of the little details, quite nice, but do not justify the price of the rooms and the dinner quality - 6 meals in total we have had there, whilst exceptional on our first try, is patchy.

With a touch more TLC, this place would rock. It is not far off - but consistency over our 2 stays was lacking. That said, would we return if in Port Appin? Of course, because there is so little choice.

As you say - a bit of a conundrum! Whilst we appreciate all feedback whether positive or not in a bid to improve the quality of our product , one person's opinion or one couple's opinion is indeed just that. It can never therefore be a 'highly accurate review of an establishment' other than in your eyes only. The justification for this comment comes when 'one' reviews the vast majority of our other reviews and you will note that many of your comments seem to be completely at odds with what virtually everyone else is saying. It is therefore at the end of the day just your opinion.
On a positive note I will bear in mind your negative comments to learn from and if nothing else ensure that we do not fall foul of those areas you have highlighted. In summary I am however disappointed that you did not enjoy your stay and especially since you felt you could not discuss these issues face to face but had to post them on this site as anonymous contributor. And by the way there is another extremely good hotel in the village called The Airds with a first class reputation which you may wish to try next time. If not you are more than welcome to come again but please let me know before you do. Yours sincerely Nicholas Horne
