We spent a week at Discovery for our Honeymoon in June, 2008. We enjoyed every minute of our time there.
We were greeted at the airport by an expedia representative. She had contact inofrmation for our representative on the island and a car waiting for us. We flew into the small Castries airport, which is a much shorter drive.
We arrived at Discovery around 1:00 am, but the reception desk was expecting us. They drove us on a golf cart to our room, and brought our bags later. Our room was beautiful, clean and cool. We had a private plunge pool out front. Waiting in our room was complimentary champagne and fruit. About 15 minutes after we arrived, complimentary sandwiches were delivered. All very welcome after 14 hours of travel!
The first morning we met with our travel rep from barefoot vacations, assigned by expedia, and booked our week of activities including golf, a catamaran cruise, sunset cruise, shopping trip and fish fry. It was very simple. She gave us her cell phone number, which we used several times to contact her. I highly recommend having an agent on the island to book things through. You can use the concierge at the resort as well, which would probably be just as good.
The activities:
The catamaran cruise was great. A full day of cruising down the island, all you can drink, a tour of the biotanical gardens, drive in volcano, lunch, and snorkeling. They dropped us off right at Discovery, so no taxi ride back!
Golf was amazing, hardly any golfers there. The taxi ride took FOREVER to get there from Discovery. We had to stop at several other resorts to pick up other guests. Lunch was good at the country club. Very laid back.
The sunset cruise was cancelled, as there weren't enough people signed up. Our rep on the island let us know right away, and offered to book something else. We were a little disappointed, but went to eat at Rainforest instead. We like the simple sandwiches at Hurricane Hole better, but it was good.
Shopping in Castries is a must.
The fish fry on friday nights is a must as well. We took a water taxi, which I recommend.
Every taxi to and from Discovery is $30.00. So every activity will cost you $60.00 more than the actual activity cost. The catamaran leaves from Castries, shopping in Castries, golf, etc. The taxi drivers are great and safe. They will schedule a time to pick you back up, so you do not have to look for another one to go back to the hotel. Thank you Andrew!
Discovery itself was amazing. We felt very safe the entire time. There was a digital safe in our room, which we used. Housekeeping mistakenly took my husband's swim shorts with the towels. I contacted the front desk, and they were back in our room cleaned and pressed. The pool and swim up bar was one of our favorite places to be. Daily breakfast (included in rate) filled us for the entire day until dinner. Lots of variety, fresh, and delicious. The staff greeted you by name, and seemed genuinely interested in you having a good time. Hurricane Hole was good for sandwiches and a drink. The BBQ on Thursday(?) was delicious. We also went to the managers cocktail party at the Pink Snail. Complimentary wine and passed appetizers. Delicious! The resort never felt crowded. We always felt very relaxed.
The resort restaurant was very good. I had a delicous steak one night. JJ's was our least favorite. The pizza place was also fun with live music and dancing. Two for one drinks!
We hired a professional photographer to take photos of us at the resort. I highly recommend! We got some great pictures, and we didn't come back with a bunch of pictures that we tried to take of ourselves! We used Ray with Karay Media. He was great!
The only downfall was getting to other places on the island, because the roads are very winding, and the cost. After seeing other resorts in Castries, we were very glad we chose Discovery, though. We will go back, and never leave the resort!
Thank you, Discovery for a perfect honeymoon!
