“Comfortable, nice property with some issues”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 19, 2013

The hotel is located in Marigot Bay, which has a reputation of being the most beautiful bay in Caribbean. Well, it does look nice from the hill above, but...Hotel, marina, small shopping center and several other buildings are cramped around the water's edge. There is hardly any room left. There are numerous yachts in the marina, also very close to each other. All this contributes the feeling of being very crowded in a small place. The beach across the bay (requires 2 min ferry shuttle) is tiny! And if you expect a tuquoise Caribbean colors, you will be disappointed. The water is clean, but it is not blue. We hired a car and a driver, which was not cheap, and visited other beaches on the island. Marigot Bay beach is by far the least interesting and least attractive.
The hotel itself has two nice pools, well mainted grounds, nice open air bar and restaurant (although both very pricy), very helpful staff. Unfortunately, their breakfast spread is very limited and mediocre. So is the food. Rooms, actually suites are nicely designed. They have a full kitchen, large living room, large modern bathroom and nice, comortable bedroom. Furniture is modern and tasteful. The problem is, only bedroom has an AC, so despite the ceiling fans, living room is just too hot to be comfortable. The lighting is very very poor in both living room and bedroom. There was a sporadic wireless internet during our stay.

Beautiful location, well maintained rooms but I was surprised how little local feeling existed in the place. The food was straight off a New York menu and the staff were so well versed at saying your welcome every time I said thank you I had to find other ways to express may gratitude to stop the annoying mannerism. The only time I actually met truly friendly people was when I crossed to the beach and mixed with the local traders and bar owners.. These were warm and wonderful people. Do yourself a favour and visit Ethiopia and Ishanna for a rum, home cooked local meal and truly natural warm friendly chat. Ethiopia also has the best water taxi deals and contacts across the island. Tell him Stu and Trisho - his new Aussie friends sent you!

Room Tip: If you can get self contained it gives you more flexibility

I thoroughly enjoyed my stay at Discovery...very quiet. The room was beautiful, spacious, and clean. The property is very, very well maintained, and the service is wonderful. You do need to remember that the culture is a different pace and things are a little slower, but you will be very well taken care of. Everything (except the rooms) are open air, so be prepared to share your meals with birds! The pools are clean, we always had towels, and there is a great swim up bar. You do need to remember your sunscreen, at least a SPF 50...the sun is VERY strong done there, and I am currently peeling, so I know what I am saying! :) The food is good and plentiful, and no more expensive than you would expect to find on any high quality resort. Breakfast is included in your daily rate. There is a marina right next door with lots of beautiful boats to watch. There are a (very) few shops a short walk away, but you will not find tourist trap after tourist trap. The property (and the entire island) is very hilly, so be prepared to climb some stairs. My daughter used the fitness facilities and said they were great. The beach for the property is a short dingy ride away, but we didn't go...I was afraid there wouldn't be any shade, so I can't review on that. All in all a very quiet and pampered trip.

Room Tip: If stairs are a problem, request a first floor unit.

The good things about Discovery are very, very good. The setting is fantastic in lovely Marigot Bay; the rooms are beautifully decorated, the staff is so so kind and the two swimming pools are great for sunning and swimming. The bad things about Discovery are: the room lighting is terrible (you can't even read in bed because the bedside lamps are so dim and trying to accomplish any task that requires major light is impossible unless you are in the bathroom); the outdoor lighting is also deficient in many areas making it easy to miss steps; the noise level is high because the staff is constantly running things up and down the walkways in noisy golf carts and the hotel generators are very loud; the pool areas don't have enough lounge chairs for all the guests and some of the umbrellas are falling apart; the landscaping has not been kept up (not bad, just kind of tired looking), and the casual restaurant does not have enough tables. When I was there there were mostly couples. Even though there is a pool just for kids there wouldn't be much else in the way of activities for them. Here are some of the other negatives about the area around the hotel which is completely out of the control of the hotel. Marigot Bay is a popular anchorage for the yachting crowd and the water has become polluted. The beach area, which is accessed via a free ferry is dirty and crowded. I would not go swimming there.
I was told the hotel is in receivership and is in the process of being sold. That would imply that some maintenance has been deferred and would explain some of the problems I have mentioned. A sale is supposed to be imminent and I heard the hotel will undergo a major updating this summer. It is still beautiful there and the staff is simply amazing, hence the 4 star rating. Also, I would agree with the review that said they need more beach towels. I could not scare up more than 2 all week and they were the thinnest towels I had ever see.

Room Tip: Try to get a room farther away from the reception area so you don't hear the noise of the genera...

Discovery hotel complex must be in need of new management. Various problems with pool, towels, decking and cleanliness levels. Staff friendly but not engaged with guests, more happy to talk to each other than working. Great place for peace and quiet if staff wouldn't persist in using petrol powered golf buggies all day. The marina provides a wonderful backdrop of activity and the promise of adventures on the seas. Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be any control over their using discovery facilities, it may be that they can but who would know! The small marina facilities are predictably overpriced. The taxi rank provides the usual gauntlet of overpriced transport as do the water taxis etc. the only real entrepreneur is Juilietta at the top of the hill who provides a free taxi service to and from her restaurant which is very good. Don't bother going to the 'beach' unless you are prepared to pay for dirty broken sun beds, trip around litter, be harassed by somewhat spaced out locals trying to sell a variety of goods and are not that bothered about the quality of the sand. However, if you want a real peaceful and beautiful spot on st. Lucia then this is it.

Starting with the positives: rooms are large and immaculately cleaned; service genuinely warm and friendly; food is good quality and reasonably priced, albeit unimaginative and not offering much of a local cuisine. Despite being located in a densely-developed Marigot Bay, the property itself offers a relaxed setting. Negatives: located right next to a busy marina with giant yachts pulling in and out, and the "boat people" frequently came up and set up camp on Discovery's property using loungers and umbrellas; there is NO BEACH of any consequence anywhere nearby; you can have a dingy take you to for example Ti Kaye beach for $50, or you must have a car (approx $75 USD per day) and drive to one of the island's many beautiful beaches on steep, windy roads (on the left side of the road). One last annoying thing was there was never enough pool towels, frequently we had to re-use yesterday's beach towels the next day, covered in sand and smelling musty.
