My wife and I stayed in Villa #1 for 7 nights on our honeymoon this past June. I did a lot of research regarding where to stay in Anguilla, and finally chose Meads Bay Villas, primarily based on the user reviews, the service (prior to purchasing the reservation) of the Meads Bay staff, and our desire to stay somewhere more private than a hotel/resort. My main wedding responsibility was to plan the honeymoon, and I can say that Meads Bay delivered more than I could have ever hoped for!
We stayed in villa #1, but each villa is basically identical on the inside. The villas are exactly as described and pictured on the website. The villa exteriors are nice looking, but the interior and deck/pool area are spectacular. The kitchen has stainless steel appliances and granite countertops, with a full-size fridge/freezer, dishwasher, microwave, oven, and stove. It has plates, utensils, blender (crucial for drinks!), toaster, etc.. There is a large dining/living room area with a large flat screen TV (we got most of the major US channels), couch and table. The bedroom was perfect with a large, comfortable king-size bed. The bathrooms/shower were clean and perfectly adequate (one of the bathrooms has a jetted tub, but we didn't use it). Each bedroom and the living room has an AC unit, and there are fans all over the place, so it was always very comfortable inside. The pool and deck area was where we spent most of our time while not on the beach. The pool was immaculate (they clean it daily), and the deck was large with a big table and several chairs. It was perfect for just hanging out with a drink after a day at the beach. You get daily housekeeping service, so fresh towels, beds made, they will even do the dishes for you. No problems with water, losing power, or anything like that. All in all the villa itself was absolutely perfect.
Side note: We stayed in Villa #1, which previous reviewers have said was a bit open and exposed. They might have added some foliage recently, but I can tell you that any concern like that went right out the window when we first walked out onto the deck. There are large bushes between your pool and the beach, such that if you are sitting in the pool you really can't be seen by anybody. There are two small hotels pretty close on either side of the villa, but they seemed pretty much empty, it was not an issue at all. The walking time from our Villa #1 deck to the beach was literally 20 seconds. I highly recommend staying in Villa 1!
Chris, the general manager, was awesome. Prior to booking, I bombarded him with questions and concerns, and he always responded promptly and politely. He arranged our ferry from SXM over to the island, and provided a ton of additional photos that were not posted on the website. Once we got there, he helped us out daily with dinner recommendations and reservations, basically anything we would have needed. He even gave me a ride in his personal vehicle when I needed to go the ATM. The rest of the staff are equally as attentive, and all extremely pleasant. You can tell they take pride in the Villa properties and the enjoyment of the guests. While you won't get bar service from your beach chair or some of the other resort-y amenities, they will stock your fridge and make runs to the supermarket upon your request with whatever you need. For example, the day we got there, in passing I mentioned we wanted to make margaritas at some point. The next morning tequila and mix was waiting for us. Trust me, the service here blasts away any other hotel and resort I've stayed at.
We chose Anguilla because we wanted a laid-back, relaxing, safe atmosphere, and that is exactly what you'll get. There are no high-rise hotels, casinos, clubs, etc.. It was the most "safe" feeling island I have ever been too, and there was never any worry about walking down the beach at night, or anything of that sort (although for the worriers, the villas do have a security guard there all night). The Villas themselves are a quick cab ride from the dock, and there is a supermarket/liquor store about 15-20 min walk from the Villas. We did not rent a car, and although it would have been convenient at times, a car is definitely not necessary. There are about 5 or 6 very good (a bit expensive, but very good) restaurants within walking distance along the beach. For cheaper options you probably would need a car, or take a quick cab ride. I won't dwell on the restaurants, Chris would tell you anything you need to know. The Viceroy hotel is a 10-15 minute walk down the beach, and has a neat bar area and restaurant to check out one evening. Meads Bay is the nicest, cleanest, most un-populated beach I have seen in the Caribbean (even better than in Providenciales). The sand is that soft fine grain sand, and the water perfectly clear. Aside from the 8 or so other people staying at the Villas, and maybe a few from the hotel next door, you pretty have the beach to yourself.
In summary, Meads Bay Villas was better than we could have ever expected, and made for an absolutle dream honeymoon. We are already planning on when we can return next summer!
You probably can't go wrong with any of the options, but I recommend Villa #1 for a truly memora...
