“Feel like you lived here before the super resorts arrived”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 8, 2012

didn't know where my friends booked our holiday. didn't know where anguilla was once i found out. arrived at the Anguilla Great House off a recommendation from a friend's grad school friend. i was so happy, it felt like home away from home.

super clean room/bathroom and beds, wifi in common areas, u.s. electricity outlets, portable a.c., a bar and restaurant, adjacent to Garvey's food shack, CuisinArt and another eatery where Banky performs, and on what locals call Anguilla's best beach-- what more could i ask for.. well, let's add stellar 5+ star service, even at what appears to be a modest hotel.

discovered many fellow guests were exchanging # of visit to anguilla stories "this is my 7th time, oh this is our 9th" i will be one of those good folks, and i will return to the Great House.

Room Tip: end units may be nice. we were near the center walkway, no problem. when you walk out from any roo...

unbeatable location on beautiful beach. Beautiful white sand and turquoise sea.
Checking in takes time, the form is quite long and detailed and you have to sign guarantees of 50 US $ per beach towel, patience is required. From the outside the rooms are pretty but inside as someone has already mentioned like a dated US motel, although for the rainy days the cable tv channels are good, the room internet patchy (although available in reception). The bed was big but firm, the furniture a mish mash of styles. The tv cabinet kept getting moved to allow staff to insert a cane dipstick to check water levels in an unplugged hole in our floor. Needless to say we were over run with Mosquitos. Shower isn't great - pressure was poor so for those ladies with long hair - washing hair is a lengthy process.
The service was not great, we noticed after about 10pm all staff appear to have left, and weren't back till 7.30 ish, although there is a courtesy phone for emergencies. Early checkouts take note!
The restaurant on site is apparently not part of the hotel but the owner was more often seen there than in the hotel.very limited menu which although tasty was always served cold. As soon as we hired a car we found stacks of good quality restaurants selling lovely hot food. The beach shack already mentioned serves brilliant ribs and fish - a better option if you don't have a car.
Would I come back yes because the beach is hard to beat but I gather the rices have just risen very steeply so of course I'd check out other options first.

Great for the price. Clean room, comfortable bed, cold a/c. Besides who goes to Anguilla to stay locked up in the room.Had dinner at Caribe Cafe on the property, good but pricey, meal very good and portions were nice size. Close to Sunshine Shack, where drinks and food with Garvey is a must! Had dessert a CuisinArt. Had such a great time that I didn't realize that the mosquitoes were enjoying my stay until I reached home.

Room Tip: Stayed in room 124, short walk to the beach.

The staff is unhurried but warm and polite.
The pool is very white and empty. The concrete deck around it is.....just concrete.
The beach is big and clean,
The rooms are one next to the other, like a strip motel.
Rocking chairs line the cement in front of the rooms.
The history of the place.....is there if your read closely, but "great" is not the word for this place.

Room Tip: call and secure an end unit, if you want air.

We chose the Great House for our accommodations while attending a destination wedding. Given the many choices, we selected it based on it's beach location, more reasonable rates and that it's a fairly short beach walk to the upscale CuisinArt Resort next door -- where you can enjoy some of their dining and spa options. The Great House was more than adequate and you can enjoy a relaxing stay at one of the better beaches on the island. I would most likely choose to stay here again for the reasons stated.

There's nothing fancy about the Anguilla Great House but it is affordable and allows guests the opportunity of viewing a spectacular ocean scene. Some of the minuses; no microwave, internet access is limited depending on what villa you are in. You may need to sit outside on the porch while mosquitoes eat away at your skin or lodge closer to the front office. And the service at the cafe is limited. We arrived for dinner at 7:30PM and the staff told us that they were closing two hours early because things were slow. We would have taken the closing much easier had their been prior notice. Hands down Rendezvous Bay is the best beach with the warmest waters to be at.

Room Tip: If you are looking for luxury or you have a great need to be pampered this is NOT the place for you...

Though I haven't always stayed here in AXA, I always visit and keep in touch with the manager,Will, and the lovely ladies who work in the restaurant/bar (Hi Tina, Chelsea, Serena).
There's nothing fancy about the Great House but it is charming and quaint and on what is probably my favorite beach in the world. The views are spectacular. It doesn't REALLY matter whether you have a garden view or ocean view room, because the room isn't the attraction- the island is- and the beach. One time when I was there I really didn't like my mattress, so they switched it out for one that was more comfortable for me. I asked for a coffee maker, and they got me one. The staff is eager to please, if you just open up and communicate in a respectful manner. The on site restaurant is really good and a great value for a midday meal for those who don't rent a car. But a car is really needed to explore all the beaches, only to conclude at the end of the day that you are staying in the best spot on Anguilla. Yes, you can upgrade to a fancier more expensive place, but you will always go back to Rendezvous Bay, because once you fall in love....
p.s. Mariah Carey was there in the middle of the 2 mi. long beach sitting under a canopy finishing up her work on one of her albums one year while we were there....you never know who you might run into....

Room Tip: If the bed is comfortable, take the room. You won't spend a lot of time in it anyway.
