“If you are not family when you get there you will be by the time you leave.”

Conchita and Benigno, the owners, are very friendly and welcoming people. The accomodations are very good for such a little town out of the beaten path! Park your car and walk the town and its many trails, then have the best Cabrales cheese you have ever tasted. By all means do try to bring a whole cheese home, you won't regret it. Tielve is a little village to relax in and take in the mountain air and the sights of that little hidden valley. Cochita and Yoli are very plesant, they are the daughters of Conchita and Benigno, tip them well and smile broadly. The drive to Tielve is a worthy adventure also.

Room Tip: Don't count on walking in and getting a room on or about July 25th - Dia de Santiago - unless yo...

I have stayed at Hostal La Plaza 7 times and always look forward to my next visit. The welcome is always warm and it and the village have changed little in the last 14 years which is part of the attraction. The village is a gem, a working mountain village, not over run with tourist constuction. Almost no English is spoken but that just adds to the feeling of being somewhere different and does not detract from the efforts made to make you feel welcome. The hostal is comfortable and clean with TV in the rooms. Meals are simple but well cooked and filling and are taken in an pleasant dining room. The bar is a basic village bar but walkers of various nations rub shoulders happily with the locals. The setting is spectacular but it is the people that make it really special.

I've been going to this Spanish hostal for over 20 years now, probably more than 10 visits in all (which says something in itself). The rooms are basic but very clean and comfortable and all en-suite (though it would be true to say the bathrooms are on the small side). They have double rooms and family rooms for four. Breakfasts are typically Spanish, i.e. not much to write home about, toast, jam and coffee, but you'll get as much as you can eat. The dinner, always served at 9pm and three course, is home-cooked and very tasty and you get a couple of choices. If you are lucky (and not a veggie!) you'll be there on the night of the cabrito guisado (roast kid goat), which is to die for. But a typical dinner would be soup or salad to start, two mains to choose from and about four postres which would always include their own award-winning cabrales cheese (blue and much stronger flavoured than stilton in case you don't know it). The cheese factory is behind the hostal and they can vac-pac it to take home. However, the best bit is the feeling of being with the family (mum Concha and daughters Conchita and Yoli). Dad Beningo and son Beningin sometimes help out in the bar but their main role is running their farm.
The area is in the midst of stunning mountain scenery so this hostal is very popular with walkers. The popular Cares Gorge walk starts about 3 miles away, down the hill at Poncebos and near there is the funicular to Bulnes too. The highest village in Los Picos, Sotres, is about 5 miles further on up the hill. The walking options are endless but the walks around this area aren't for the faint hearted as the gradients can be stiff. Parking is outside the hostal or in the main square not far away.
The prices for food and accommodation are very keen and substantially less than in Arenas.

Room Tip: Never picked one myself. All the rooms I have been offered were just fine.
