Comfortable, friendly family hotel just off the main road in the small town of Arenas de Cabrales. We booked a superior room (with booking.com) on the top floor which had mountain views, lots of light, was spacious, clean, quiet, idiosyncratically furnished, and had a comfortable bed, new bathroom (bath/shower), also flooded with light, and a very small TV. Arenas is an attractive place with lots of bars and restaurants: we had a great meal in the triangular-shaped restaurant overlooking the river on the main road very close to the hotel. Regarding parking, we were directed to a nearby hotel parking area, but this was sealed off with tape and anyway looked like an abandoned building site, so we just parked on the road nearby with no problem. Nice afternoon walk east from the village high above the valley side (climb up to the NE corner of the town). However the main reason for staying here is to walk the Cares Gorge from Poncebos to Cain: a good candidate for the best walk in Spain. Some advice, as there is little information. Avoid weekends and bank holidays. Take sun and rain protection and plenty of food and, especially, water. A torch is useful for the tunnels at the end. Allow a minimum of 3 hours each way plus time for a drink (food also available) in Cain. Drive south from Arenas to the scattered collection of buildings and hydroelectric plant which is Poncebos and continue to a car park after a bridge by the funicular (left: not immediately apparent because the funicular is underground). Either leave the car here, or instead save an extra 10 minutes walking by not driving across the bridge but instead taking the small road to the right which climbs past a hotel/restaurant/bar, through a small tunnel and up to where the signposted path officially starts, climbing up to the right (be careful not to miss this: if you just follow alongside the river you are on the wrong path). There is no organised parking and people just park alongside the road, so on a busy day expect chaos (which is why the funicular car park area can be a good option: we did this and did not regret it). The first part of the walk is a stiff climb for 45 mins or so, then a descent before the path levels out and enters the most spectacular part of the gorge. It is a hard walk for those not fully fit, but you return by the same route so can judge for yourself when to turn back. Take care on the last part of the return as the descent is tough on tired legs. The views, needless to say, are incredible.
